    I moved to Flushing with my parents in 1971. I moved back to my hometown after I graduated in 1983. My entire family has moved back to the west side, near Lake Michigan. Poverty is worse here, as I live in the 2nd poorest county in the state. But, I'm away from the city & that's awesome. I was just in Mt. Morris/Clio a month ago, visiting a friend. It looked a little run down compared to 15 years ago. I did fond a Big John's Steak & Onion, which made my day!

    You drove by my house! Twice! Clio Rd. used to be hoppin' back in the day, lots of car lots, restaurants, and the building at 14:05 used to be Grapevine Records & Tapes, which was a huge record store in the late 70's and early 80's! Bought lots of stuff there, most of which I still have! It is a shame what's happened to the whole area the last few years, only can pray that things will get better!

    Grew up in Mt. Morris as did my parents. Graduated in 1974. It is heart wrenching to see what has happened to the whole Flint area. Since 1980, I've lived in Adrian, MI in Lenawee County (Both have their issues that mirror Flint and vicinity). I no longer go back to Mt .Morris. It's just too painful.

      I feel the painful part too as I was born and raised in Flint. It's so hard and depressing to go back, although having a coney every time seems to ease that a little bit. The despair is so heartwrenching. So stagnant and dismal. I live in Okemos, which is right outside of Lansing, much better than life in Genesee County.

    Two of my good friends (married couple, 79 & 82 years old) grew up in Mt. Morris, and back then it was a nice community. My family moved there in the 1970s, just before things got bad financially, and during the 1980s I briefly taught at the high school. Everyone remembered the time when a student could drop out of high school on Friday and go to work for General Motors the following Monday and earn more than his teachers, so some folks didn't place a lot of value on education.

    Grocery stores have closed in north Flint into Mt. Morris and Beecher due to too much loss due to shoplifting. The national chains have all closed and some lesser known independent stores have tried to serve the area area but also found they could not make money in that section of Genesee County.
    I worked in the area (thankfully didn't live there) for over 20 years and saw major depreciation of the quality of life. GM left town and there really wasn't anything to take its place. GM paid so well that when I first worked in the area I did not run into any young adult men who had college on their radar. When I asked why I soon learned the answer. A GM worker who just graduated from high school could earn more than I with a Masters. Why are there so few adults with college degrees in Genesee County? I think I just answered it. This area is economically dead even though the local politicians say otherwise.

    Mt Morris city has certainly declined over the years. My parents had friends who lived there and we visited when I was a kid in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s it seemed nice then. I’ve only been there a few times in recent years. A friend of mine and a cousin were buried in the cemetery there and a friend opened a restaurant there which failed.
    The famous 1953 Beecher Tornado passed through Mt Morris Twp and the Beecher district causing great destruction and loss of life.
    Mt Morris Twp is big in area and much of it is semi rural. The parts of it west of Linden Rd along Pierson Rd , Kelly Rd, Flushing Rd identify with Flushing. The businesses and homes in the area have Flushing mailing addresses and the kids attend Flushing schools. It’s a bit more affluent than other parts of the Township. Mt Morris Twp police patrol the area.
    The Meijer that was closed down closed because it was “no longer profitable”. Same for that Kroger you mentioned and a briefly opened Hamadys store. The Long John Silver closed and was torn down after a fire and the Burger King simply closed. Another business across from where Meijers used to be closed down after a fatal shooting. A motel nearby was closed due to shootings and prostitution. That area of Pierson Rd and I-75 has gone downhill fast in the last decade.

    • @wadehm63
      @wadehm63 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Both Kroger and Meijer had a lot of theft. Same thing with the brief reintroduction of Hamadys. Too bad, but people are so poor there. I can't imagine a grocery store staying in business now with the rise of food costs.

    • @ChrisHarden

    • @lowellwhite1603
      @lowellwhite1603 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ChrisHarden The contrast between the cities of Flushing and Mt Morris, is very different. Elms Rd divides the City of Flushing and Mt Morris Twp and that confuses even the locals as the east side is still a Flushing address even though it is Mt Morris Twp. There are quite a few traffic accidents at the corner of Elms and Pierson and sometimes both police departments respond. By the way, the Flushing Kroger is in the City of Flushing. Their traffic has increased quite a bit since the Meijer and Kroger to the east closed.

    Thank you! I lived in mt morris for 4 years with who was my ex boyfriend now. My family really didn't like that we were living there because it was close to Beecher. We lived on Beach Street before moving to hazel Park apartments. Nothing bad happen to us because we had a security system.

    Ill speak up. Ain't no hate in the 48458. It may not be a post card town, but is exsepting. We have room for everyone. Its where i call home . Have since 1985, my wife grew up here its been her home since her birth. There are a lot of beautiful people in mt morris and shes one of them. Bet you didnt know 1977 gallery girl next door was from mt morris. There was a fatal stand off at a liquor store across from elementary on mt morris road . It made national news. I dont know what your point is but i know this, im proud of my town. Ill take mt morris over any other town in the area just for the six smoke shops. We got nothing to hide and we don't judge. We should all be working together not taering each other down. United we bargain divided we beg.

    There is nothing near Flint, Michigan that is not declining.
    Lots of investors come here because it is cheap and they think they can make a buck. Hahaha. Good luck with that.
    Even the poor and homeless can't come here anymore because the investors come in and raise the cost of living.

      I’m not trying to shame anyone or anything. I just want to speak the truth of everywhere that I go and see. I couldn’t ignore the economic stats, the crime rate and the blight I saw going through the township. The city seemed much nicer than other areas of the township.
      I believe you! Most cities & towns have a decent Mexican restaurant or two.

    Back in the day, Mt Morris was considered a big step up from Beecher and Flint's north side. You can get a good feel for what it was if you are a member of Classmates. Look at the yearbooks back then and now for Beecher, Mt Morris and Flint Northwestern. Looking at Clio Rd, if you add some tropical plants and throw in some chickens running around.....it becomes Haiti.

    Of all your videos, I have a lot I could go on and ask many questions about the content of this video in the light of trying to understand. Normally in my experience an area like this would be thriving with entrepreneurs and families relieved to be out of in this case Flint. But this video is full of abandoned grocery stores new car dealerships and lumber yards. Possibly a Walmart ? Main St will not survive if the big stores on the connectors are leaving on their own. Gas stations, car washes and grocery stores leaving abandoned property is a horrible sign of a dead economy. I mean nobody needs gas or food? Wow… your most shocking video yet.

    • @amberm8946
      @amberm8946 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Please don’t take this guy’s videos as thorough lol. He skips a lot of area and misses things like yes there is a nearby Kroger. Kroger & SAL are both WITHIN Mt Morris. There are two VGs locations and Walmart within 15 minutes of MM. Mt morris township, particularly the area he was showing on Clio and Pierson road, are within 15 minutes of a Beuchre’s and kroger in flushing, Kroger near the miller rd corridor in flint, one in burton. He also fully skipped the north end of MM, which has a lot of cool new dispensaries, a park, elementary schools, and a great Mexican restaurant. Like MM isn’t anything special, and the township commercial area is rooooough, but it would probably be helpful if he talked to people from the area and didn’t spend his time gawking at the lower income areas of the township for the majority of the video. No one refers to the township as mt morris either, and I don’t understand why he only covered mm city downtown. The mt morris address extends much further.
