I’m so glad you’re doing a whole series on Flint. I don’t think many people realized how bad it actually was. I was one of them until I came to give a seminar with some of the activists there in 2017. I saw the water tanks and the state of the place, but the signs on the wall in the bathroom saying not to wash your hands with the sink? That was a real eye-opener. This is great work, Chris. Well researched and well done.
@12:20 that plaza (North Flint Plaza) off to the right was twice as big and packed. MLK street was Detroit St and dirt north of Pierson Rd. Imogene's Beauty Shop was where there is field now as the plaza was L shaped at that time. She sponsored out little league baseball team at Gundry. @14:30 Pierson Rd was solid houses and businesses through here. @14:50 on the left was Selby Elementary, a huge K-6 school. Packed with kids. Behind it is Manley Village sub division that fed the school. One huge ghetto now along with what's left of Selby. @15:28 the Northwest Plaza, a massive 3 sided plaza with Yankee Stadium on the NW corner and the Fair on the SE corner as anchors, this place had it all. There were slot car tracks on the other side of Pierson. Back at the corner of Pierson and Clio was a huge accident involving a gas tanker truck and a car. It blew up the whole intersection and several were killed. This was a very busy area so this was a huge deal. @15:30 on the left was where the A&W stood. It was a right of passage for Northwestern High girls to car hop in short shorts. My dad always pulled right up to where they stood to park. This was THE Northwestern High hangout on Fri&Sat nights. If you were a teen and not from NW there was going to be trouble. @17:12 on the left side and across Saginaw St used to be older 1930's style store fronts. An Army/Navy store is where we as 8 yr olds rode our bikes to to buy WWII army helmets, mess kits and bayonets. @18:10 this was grocery store that was always crowded. There was a small barber shop in a 15x15 house in the parking lot called Majewski's. There was pot belly stove and a poster with various haircuts offered like flat top and crew cuts. He liked to "peel it on off" and apply "Stinkum water" to your burning neck. @18:20 south on Detroit st which was dirt at the time. @19:15 was a small strip. That liquor store used to be Germer's Drugs. He had a large soda fountain counter with a dozen red swivel seats. Models were bought from Germer's and this is where we 8 yr olds got our first peek at Playboy's. We put them inside big Life magazines..Holy Moly!!!! @19:20 Carpenter and Dupont. Off to the right is the Beecher area which was a poorer white neighborhood. We had constant rock fights with those guys for years at this border. Next is Northwestern High School. A huge city high that we played in while being built. Nothing but fields, trees and gravel pits for a square mile to play in. This is what we needed the Army stuff for. @21:15 on the right used to be Northwest Bowl where we bowled as kids on Sat or Sun afternoons. @24:04, the exact spot that tanker blew up. @24:50 this park was actually a park with gazebos boat rentals and picnic areas. This was before my time and was called Devil's Lake that was bottomless as I knew it. @29:34 Marengo St, dangerous back in the day and even more so now. A NW High tough guy was shot to death at this stop when I was about 12. @35:00 on the right is an old huge cemetery that kids would ride in at night looking for ghosts. Since this was a rough area, that led to the suspense. This ride up Saginaw St looks like a ghost town in it's own right.

Charges should be re-filed against officials, but also the Flint city council has a big role in this cluster F@€#… they should be held accountable also
8:48 I remember when they built that set of viaducts over Pierson Road. Who would have thought that twenty years later all of that would have been unneeded (no need for I-475 or Pierson Road going under the RR tracks)?
Born and raised in Flint, north side Dort/Carpenter rd. area. A 100 year old seeping landfill still exists right on the banks of the Flint River, just upstream of the Flint water plant. Massive sewage sludge pits are upstream from water plant. One sludge pit is very close to Mott lake, the other is between Webster rd. and the Flint river. The sludge pit on Webster rd. is capped with toxic foundry sand from GM Buick city. Left Flint forever in 1987.
Good report Chris. I am astounded at the level of incompetence in every step compounded by more on top of their errors. MI portrays their state is "educated". Can that be defined? What gives another person the right to inflict harm on others and then have the charges removed. I am in shock. Mi is going down for good.
I live in the area of flint you just shared. Flint had contractors going through the neighborhoods digging up all the lines and replacing what needed to be replaced ....the lock and tube for the water shutoff I have the pictures of them doing it..
I remember when the flint water crisis started. It was so unnecessary how everything played out because of people wanting to save money and cut down on cost. I just don't know about people sometimes. Then when everything happened and everybody started finding out about it people started backtracking and trying to make it right to put things mildly when The whole situation could have been avoided all together.
Wow! Watching this video really gets you thinking! Scary stuff. I wouldn't believe anything the government told me about the water. Wow! People deserve much better. Thanks for all th hard work you put into these videos Very informative.
I grew up next to the dam, going to the 7 11, Johnson Elementary school. Back in the 70s this was a great place to grow up. My grandchildren got lead poisoning from the water. They still cannot drink the water. My son has filters on their faucets now.
Long after we know lead was bad laws were made so only lead main service lines could be used. This protected union plumber jobs because it was an art that only they could do.This also protected union campaign donations to politicians.

Apparently most of southeast Michigan and more had been toxic for years and they knew. We are just learning about it. We were literally told no one told us despite knowing how bad it is all over for most.

I’ve seen a lot of homes for sale in Flint on Zillow. Do you know if Flint allows for private wells to be drilled? And then installing new plumbing?
