- This happened to me while I was in the middle of a race, but I was able to stay online for almost 3 hours after the wifi servers closed at 10am est. It happened just as I was getting the hang of things with the bit bike.

damn dude. makes me sad thinking about how ill never be able to run home to my wii after school and try to get onto the wii as fast as possible, eager to jump onto an online race again like i once did as a kid. it also reminds me of how when they cut the ds wi-fi connection, i was winning a pokemon battle on the first pokemon black online when it booted me out. i was really shocked at first, but when i tried to game sync to do the dream thing and it gave me The Message Of Death, then i understood. i cried a lil ngl

I miss them. I had so much fun memories as a kid- playing super mario galaxy with brother and having fun-losing and turning off the wii- all of those. There is something different about the wii and ds that just makes them better than the 3ds and wii u.

Actually, the reason the Wii and DS servers shut down is Completely different to the Wii U and 3DS.
The Wii and DS only shut down because of gamespy matchmaking, so on a technical level, people could have been playing until the game spy servers shut down, but nobody was actually able to do that on a real Wii/DS
It all ended before I could use WFC :(

Nowadays, the only people who put in the effort to get wiimmfi and play it regularly are the extremely competitive players, which ruins it for me. I played online for the fun of it. Not to mention, literally everyone uses Funky on the Flame now.. :/

So many memories of my sister and I two-player Wifi racing.
Our internet was slow so we had some load times, but it was so much more fun playing with real people around the world!

Wiimmfi isn't a bad idea but it's really hard if we want Nintendo to bring the server back though.
The sole reason this all happened was because Gamespy shut down, and Nintendo was too fucking lazy to get new servers. Nintendo only has themselves to blame for this failure.

It's not the same though.
This is somewhat eerie in a way. People are talking about how its creepy because it fades to black, but no one is talking about how 2 of the miis that appear while loading into the match look frightened. Almost like people knew this was going to happen.

This was spooky to watch. The music + the message at 2:22 made it even more frightening. The fact that this was in the middle of a race just goes to show how lucky you are being able to see that.

Probably the only reason I don’t like Nintendo game is because of their online services. Miiverse came and I was glad, then it got discontinued. I got Miitomo, then that got discontinued. Nintendo, do you want to give us a good online service? If you do at least keep around for a few more years! 😠😤😡😩😫
Kreme Kareek services like WFC were discontinued due to lots of hacking and exploits. Services like Miitomo were discontinued because of the low player base.

Nintendo Network and Nintendo Switch Online will last for ages because Nintendo actually runs those servers, unlike WFC.
They will only shut them down due to a low player base. (Which may happen to Nintendo Network soon)

And don't forget MK7 on the 3DS as well... that game may not be as well remembered as most other entries, but it's still a decent game.

I love how much love and care Nintendo puts into their stuff. When I transfered my wii files from the wii to the wii u there was a whole animation of pikmin moving all my old games. It brought back so many memories.

During the last months of the wii servers, when I was young, I met a friend. He was the best, we talked every night after school on the wii, at the time we were too young to have phones so we couldn't have Insta or even messages. So wii was our only communication platform. When I came home from school I got on wii sport and found out that the servers were permanently taken down forever I was devastated. So now I'm left with the curiosity of thinking were that person is right now, or if they even remember me...

I still can't believe it's truly gone. I remember when I ran home from school every day in order to get on my Wii as fast as possible, and get on an online race as fast as possible. I got pretty good, but when MK7 came out I mostly moved on to that. When I heard that they were shutting it down, for the last 2 hours of the service I played this game nonstop for the first time in around a year. I got this as well - I was leading on the final lap of a Maple Treeway race (I was Yoshi, because that's who I always was as a kid), when my screen faded to black like this. At first, I thought I had just gotten disconnected - it happened a lot when I was younger (our wifi wasn't the greatest). Then, when I selected the 1-player again, I got the message. I cried once more for a game that had made me cry, both for joy and sadness, for over 4 years of my childhood.
Thank you, Mariokart Wii, for being such a big part of my childhood. I will never forget you.
