    If you asked an Oasis fan what their best ever set of live performances were, they would more than likely say Maine Road, and the second night in particular is held in godly acclaim. This show to most dwarfs their other huge gigs in Finsbury Park, Earl’s Court and even Knebworth which most people outside the fandom always describe as Oasis at their peak. Two years earlier they were playing to 500 people in the 100 Club in London, and now were selling out football stadiums with a huge album that ascended them to new heights all around the world. They are on another level at Maine Road, with a hometown crowd much like the first night, enthusiastically singing along. It’s no wonder then, when this show was chosen over both Knebworth nights for their There and Then DVD. Songs like Some Might Say, Cast No Shadow, Wonderwall, The Masterplan, and Live Forever among others are up there as the best renditions of all of their live career. Let’s get the big question out of the way. Is this MY favourite Oasis gig? No (for those who didn’t know, Glastonbury 1995 is my favourite Oasis gig). Is this particular gig overrated? Maybe. Let me explain.
    The two Maine Road gigs are undeniably one of Oasis’ best performances. And since they’ve been performed, there has been many articles, bootlegs of both the audio and video and rabid acclaim from fans (and Liam, who apparently thought this was the best night at Maine Road, and Noel preferred the night before). Out of the two nights, I actually prefer the first night for a reason I explained on that video. The first night is more consistent, but this night has the higher highs. I still hold this sentiment today. There’s some truly special moments throughout both shows though that were just never repeated again. With this in mind, the performance. Liam is in pretty immaculate form throughout the first few months in 1996 and despite being the last night of an already busy touring year, he sounds fantastic, even embellishing lines in both Round Are Way and Cigarettes & Alcohol. And, added by the fact he sings far more song’s compared to all the previous shows prior to these nights, both are probably in the tier of Liam Gallagher’s best ever live performances of all time. The rest of the band put on a great performance too, with many high-tempo renditions of the songs.
    But anyways, there are a few issues tonight which knock this gig a little bit for me. Typically, Noel lets the audience take over if they are enthusiastic enough, but Liam, not aware of this goes straight into Whatever as normal (it’s not the harmonica player’s fault, which is an argument I have seen, as he always comes in early). Noel shakes his head and gets Liam in a huff, and as such Noel takes over for the entire song. I never got why Noel didn’t just let it slide instead of being such a perfectionist about it. But, even funnier is Noel throws the entire band off in letting the audience sing. Also in I Am The Walrus, a terrible screechy noise comes from one of the amps throwing the band off at several points. Of course these are small things, but in my opinion they should be taken into account. Other things to mention. This is the last performance of The Swamp Song done live. The song would stay on the setlist in the form of the studio version played through the P.A, which I always found as an unfortunate change. Also, Cum On Feel The Noize would never be played after this show either, with the song being a unique addition only to the Maine Road gigs. Anyways, both nights are undeniably top Oasis gigs, no matter what way you look at it. So enjoy it, the full performance, without any copyright blocks.

    Greatest gig they ever did. Undisputable. The atmosphere, the band, the vocals, the visuals, the clothes, the energy, the power, the FUCKING PASSION!!
    This is the first live performance that I watched in full from them, and from then on I was hooked by their gigs not just the albums!

      Yeah it’s a great way to get the crowd pumped for the gig. Also proved to be an excellent way for Liam to arrive onstage a minute into the jam.

      It’s good, but honestly i like fuckin in the bushes more as a gig-opener. And honestly more than that imho “turn up the sun” is their best gig-opener

    I agree that the first night is more consistent but the 2nd night has more passion and the highs on this gig are really fucking high like wow (some might say, morning glory, live forever, cum on feel the noise)
    Liam Gallagher in that Umbro sweater is the most iconic thing ever

    Best gig in their career. Umbro sweater, Union Jack guitar, Liam's voice in perfect shape, atmosphere, City stadium. PEAK!
    I understand the complain about the 'Whatever' problem, but even this is a classic moment now. lol

    Definitely my favourite gig now 👌, would've loved it if Noel had let Liam sing Whatever and dropped his ego.

    My first ever gig. I was 15 and it set the bar insanely high. I don't think I've ever been as excited as when they kicked into The Swamp Song and the crowd starterd jumping.
    Thanks for uploading.

    I prefer the Earl's Court '95 gigs by a whisker, because there's something just a little bit 'fresher' about them.
    The lads still didn't quite know how just how huge they were going to be at that point. So, there's a bit less swagger and a bit more genuine excitement.
    By 1996, they knew and so did we. as a result, there's more swagger and a bit less "wide-eyed WTF is going on"

    I still think oasis Maine road 2nd night will go down as one of the best oasis gigs ever.
    While I like oasis earls court 1995 and few other gigs, the energy at this show sounds completely unmatched with any other , the songs sound so massive and huge and has some of my favorite best live versions of them.
    I mean cmon, live forever sounds absolutely mega in Maine road!
    Sure there are problems with this night that makes it inconsistent, the peaks and highs top out any of the lows the show has, now if only we could get HD video quality of the event, we could have a Maine road movie 😂
    12/10 peak oasis performance
    Beats knebworth out of the park.

    51:15 oh my god, i've never heard that aborted Whatever part of the gig! That's hilarious that Noel stops liam (as he's a perfectionist) and then Noel himself lets the crowd sing, thereby throwing off the orchestra, and he has to come in and save it. jesus lads!!! ha ha. nice to see that Rock Gods are still humans after all

      You can hear Liam say 'alright tanktop' at the start, harmonica player is wearing a fancy waistcoat thing so assuming he's talking about him and in the video you can see him give Liam the finger 😃

  • @SifterBootlegs
    @SifterBootlegs 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    According to Noel, he stopped Whatever due to the string orchestra having to be able to play what’s on the sheets in front of em and not just play what they think or hear. If Liam comes in a bar early, the orchestra will just play what they regularly play and not at the same time as Liam. So, I kinda get if the strings are playing something different to what Liam is singing. But, Noel was being quite a perfectionist and definitely should’ve just let Liam go on.
    Great Merge btw!

    • @JoeMarshall23
      @JoeMarshall23 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Noel couldn't just let Liam carry on with the orchestra being 4 bars (not 1 bar) out of sync, that would've been an even bigger trainwreck than stopping where they did. Singers get all the glory but they can't just start singing whenever they feel like it, damn us pesky musicians keeping the shit together behind them.

    It's close but it's the better of the 2 nights for me as I feel that Liam goes for it a bit more on the singing (maybe due to this being last gig for over 3 months) and bits like the Whatever fight just add to it for me, wouldn't be Oasis without a bit of chaos

    At the start of night 1 and end of night 2 Liam is struggling. Cant even finish the last song. Liam was like a 90mph bowler in cricket or a knockout artist in boxing, you got to use them properly! Liam even though I half despise him was actually done a bit dirty by Noel for not managing him better. Especially being his older brother.

  • @msv7856
    @msv7856 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Liam paid later for singing as loud and energetic as this. Just skip to 1-4 years later and you can see the effect it had. Obviously 10 years later he sounded awful.
