Haha to be fair..they knew more about blocking and business than George Lucas in the prequels having everyone stand talking in shot reverse shot. Besides padme packing and Anakin's pacing But eh, origins and me2 are still better than 90% of all games regardless
Usually they have a library of animations that they make in advance and then just queue them up to run at particular times. So they probably animated this turn once and then just spammed it everywhere. 🤣
I find myself replicating these animations in real life more than I'd like to admit... The *Lean on the bar counter* and *Stretching* animations above all.
I think most awkward ones are the "pointing the index finger" and "pounding fist to palm" repeatedly seen in mass effect. They are so common and looks so unnatural.
My favorite Bioware lazy thing they do is when characters have to pass items to each other so the camera conveniently zooms on the upper half of the body hiding their hands.
Thank you, I just went from 'i have no idea what they are talking about' to 'i need to practice the bioware turn and use it to casually end conversations'.
Honestly it's such a good and very simple way to add a little bit of dynamic movement to an otherwise static scene that I never even thought about it before lmao Now I will never be able to unsee it
I’m going through some stuff right now and having a very hard time mentally. Chuckling at this video made my day. As dumb as it sounds, thank you. This video got me through another day
As someone who is in college almost through with a major of game design I learned that reusing animations is very much something game designers do as it means they don’t have to make 100 animations for each character and instead make 20 animations they can skin onto each character it saves time and most people won’t notice
Yup! I hope no one takes this video as a criticism of these game's reuse of animations, this specific one has just always brought me joy lol. Always enjoyed noticing how devs repurpose animations with camera angles and cuts to make them seem different.
I would suggest "SWTOR Characters doing the Bioware Turn" but it would genuinely take months haha. I wouldn't even want to attempt to count how many times it happens over there
How about that animation where they turn around while looking at you all suspicious/intrigued as they're walking away. You know the one. That one is the one I always notice lmao
Lol I was just thinking about this yesterday - this and characters sitting down and then immediately getting up in cutscenes, espcially in Mass Effect (Aria/Miranda, Shepard). 😂 And also the same animation of going up and down the stairs in all their games ☠️
Thanks so much for this! I can't imagine how many hours it took you to make this short video. When I made a five minute video of a game that I like, those were recordings that I had taken over the years and it took about 20 hours to put it all together.
SHAFT's Head Tilt was done out of a stylistic choice, the BioWare Turn is a result of crunch culture. Particularly with both DA 2 and DA: I. As both games have rushed development cycles and mismanaged leadership decisions.
The other fun thing to notice is that cutscene animations are different than in game animations for female characters when they are walking. Nothing is more jarring than watching them go from mostly feminine hip sway (in game animation) to waddling like they have an atomic wedgie (cutscenes) 😂
"Bioware did one hour-long mocap session for knights of the old republic in 2003 on a budget of $3.25 and never again since."
KotOR: We have to have these characters kiss here, but we're overbudget. Uhhhh... fade to black.
@@xFlareLeon lbr it's for the best we didn't see those polygons trying to connect faces
Bioware animators when a character has to pace around while talking: I know what to do
Haha to be fair..they knew more about blocking and business than George Lucas in the prequels having everyone stand talking in shot reverse shot. Besides padme packing and Anakin's pacing
But eh, origins and me2 are still better than 90% of all games regardless
And when they need someone to push themselves back from a bar? "I've been training my whole LIFE FOR THIS"
Usually they have a library of animations that they make in advance and then just queue them up to run at particular times. So they probably animated this turn once and then just spammed it everywhere. 🤣
My favorite is Solas just going “hahaha yeah” and then doing this blank stare while walking away. He’s so awkward
I'm DYING at this one, I keep replaying it 😂
It's 10:09 for anyone who wants it over and over 🤣
LOL, that's so great!
i can just see him going 'why did i say so weird' lmao
I've watched that single one like 15 times I'm addicted
mass effect npcs whenever a quest ends:
exit stage left
How have I sunk thousands of hours into these games and never noticed this. . .
Saaame! I can't believe I was so blind all these years as to not see it. Now I'll never be able to UNsee it! 😂
yea I feel rather stupid now😂😂
right.. i’m literally replaying origins rn too
You'll never be able to unsee all the shared animations between Mass effect and Dragon age now. 😅
It’s not really a thing to notice lol it’s just characters walking off or just walking around
i LOVE the bioware turn, the drinking alcohol head shake, the awkward hand grab. they're in all of dragon age and mass effect! it's so funny
Drinking game material.
The alcohol head shake cracks me up. I'd puke if I did that after a shot haha
Don’t forget the “seat wiggle” as I call it. Another classic.
Once you are made aware of it, you can never unsee the BioWare turn
I knew EXACTLY what animation was gonna play when I clicked on this video
My favorite Bioware lazy thing they do is when characters have to pass items to each other so the camera conveniently zooms on the upper half of the body hiding their hands.
if you ever tried to do a drinking game spotting this animation, you'd be in the hospital within minutes.
7:55 The "Lean on Wall" animation. Saw Liara do this so, so many times!
liara and kaidan!! they were both the main offenders of this 😭
Blackwall also does this
Ive always noticed it and would think “where are they going 😭” ESPECIALLY when theyre walking towards a whole wall
Watching this muttering “ope there he goes” every time they turn away 😂
10:10 IM FUCKING SCREAMING 💀
This whole video is pure gold I swear 😂
"Ha ha, yes." -Solas 10:10
Thank you, I just went from 'i have no idea what they are talking about' to 'i need to practice the bioware turn and use it to casually end conversations'.
🙂↪️😐➡️
"I should go.'
i will never unsee it 😭
this shit is alive and well in veilguard
good
excelent. It must be preserved for eternity
"we gonna give more life to our characters, make them more human"
-i got it, animate them walking away
"Perfect"
My favorite will always be Aria repeatedly getting up and sitting down for a single conversation in ME2.
Social anxiety be like:
When you add it all together it's painfully obvious that it's the same animation but in-game it really isn't that obvious to me... Hilarious video!
I mean they just 🔁
… and yet it’s SO iconic
Watching 13 minutes of the Bioware Turn > Culture War content
You made the correct choice 😉
🙌
This is the truth. The BioWare turn is magnificent
No but this is actually sending me 😭😭😭 I hope some of the iconic janky animations make it into Veilguard to give me a chuckle
My neighbours hear cheering later and think I’m watching A Sports, instead it’s just the first time I’ve seen a BioWare Turn while playing Veilguard.
its veilguard the whole game is jank including the story.
"Weeeeh its not like origins and yet inquisition wasnt either and i like it for some reason."@STEVEYTHEEXEEVEE
@@thesewergang2064 YOU good lil bro?
@STEVEYTHEEXEEVEE I mean I'm not hating a game just because it's popular so yeah
I love that never in my life have I even thought about this. But as soon as I read the title, I knew exactly what animation it was going to be 😂
This kind of content is what TH-cam is all about.
happy to see you here! i love your videos!
They're all just exiting the stage at the end of their scene
My neck hurts now
Like watching tennis
My face is tired from....all of this
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY WHO NOTICED IT
ITS SO DRAMATIC
Honestly it's such a good and very simple way to add a little bit of dynamic movement to an otherwise static scene that I never even thought about it before lmao
Now I will never be able to unsee it
This is going to be something I can’t unsee for any future future play throughs of these games.
- I'm listening, Aveline
- Where tf are you going
I’m going through some stuff right now and having a very hard time mentally. Chuckling at this video made my day. As dumb as it sounds, thank you. This video got me through another day
Hope things get better for you, stay strong
I’m gonna start practicing that turn immediately
I love this "turn" it's so dramatic
As someone who is in college almost through with a major of game design I learned that reusing animations is very much something game designers do as it means they don’t have to make 100 animations for each character and instead make 20 animations they can skin onto each character it saves time and most people won’t notice

I think people will take this video as meme material instead. xD this is gold, thank you ❤
4:16 is too on the nose
Out of context, I swear the VA is breaking the 4th wall. 😂
It’s not a bad animation, to be fair. But it’s still very funny how there is absolutely no variation. They have one animation for every single turn.
Need one of that one-two motion hand gesture from Veilguard Rook does all the time!
Also need a comp of all of Hawke’s awkward head tilts and nods
Sounds like a dance move, "The Bioware Turn" :p
THIS IS KILLINGGG MEEEEEEEE im finished i could never unsee this again.
edit: IT JUST KEEPS GOING. IT NEVER ENDS.
This is quality content
Every time i waited for it, knew it was coming and yet it still surprised me
This is too funny lmao.
Aaaaand now I'm13 minutes closer to Veilguard release date, nice. I'm coping!!
Now I do this in real life to smoothly transition out of conversation with anyone.
10:10
This has no business being this funny
I would suggest "SWTOR Characters doing the Bioware Turn" but it would genuinely take months haha. I wouldn't even want to attempt to count how many times it happens over there
Followed by the Mass Effect hand chop?
also by the bioware protagonist uncomfortable face close-up
Haha the angry hand chop I forgot about that one
Omg the mass effect head bobbing tho
BIG STUPID JELLYFISH
The 'Bioware arm fold'?
10:19 Lady is looking at Cole like he just did some magical fart in their face and are traumatized by it.😂
This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life.
Anders is so dramatic and Solas is so AWKWARD! I LOVE IT 🥰
So true. My favorite re-used animation is the inquisitors frequet half-turn, looking around saunter.
Now I can’t unsee it. Maker’s balls!
They're big
You wouldn't be able to unsee those, either.
This infects your brain and you start imagining it everywhere. Books, memories, etc. It takes a while to unsee! Lol
Always the "oh, we're done? I guess bye now... you're still here... awkward"😅
This is the first time I've heard of the 'Bioware Turn' but it is getting funnier the further I get in the video.
Every time I see this turn, I am reminded that Bioware made Mass Effect too.
omg I NEVER put all of them together! but that's so true I can't unsee it! xD
This is so fucking funny, I won’t be able to unsee it now
Oh man the good old days. Much better then the super hero fist on hips of DAV
the two steps forward head nod is a great second to this
Oh my god, I'll never be able to look at these games the same way I used to.
I love it.
How about that animation where they turn around while looking at you all suspicious/intrigued as they're walking away. You know the one. That one is the one I always notice lmao
this is so validating 😂
i knew i wasn't crazy!!
after playing veilguard twice, i needed this laugh.
I like to think I know everything about these games but here comes a video pointing out something I never noticed
Someone put it into words omg their heads follow their bodies like their necks are stuck
Oh my God, I can’t unsee it now
this and the 360 turn kill me everytime
Now do one for every Mass Effect/DA character that does the "walk forward and dramatically nod" animation.
I hope there’s at least one BioWare turn in Veilguard 😌
How have I not noticed this I played these 464747844847 times?!?!?!?
wait, you're so right the characters always do this 😂😂😂
I'm pretty sure I've seen Liara do this in ME at least 500 times.
Lol I was just thinking about this yesterday - this and characters sitting down and then immediately getting up in cutscenes, espcially in Mass Effect (Aria/Miranda, Shepard). 😂
And also the same animation of going up and down the stairs in all their games ☠️
I swear, sometimes i move like bioware characters after 6 hours of playing at saturdays
Thanks so much for this! I can't imagine how many hours it took you to make this short video. When I made a five minute video of a game that I like, those were recordings that I had taken over the years and it took about 20 hours to put it all together.
im so used to this now that i completely forgot the point of the video 5 minutes in and stopped noticing the turn lmaoo
Who’s here from Twitter?
I know I am..
unfortunately :3
lmao i tweeted that 😂
@@elfbotanist What? That’s awesome! 💪🏽 🔥
How have I never noticed this...I've played every DA and ME multiple times over...
How is nobody pointing out 4:14, that was perfect xD
Hawke's cousin:"Having a cousin turned out to be a good thing, maybe having a father will to!"
Hawke's uncle: Eh...
Kinda wish I hadn’t clicked on this because now it’s gonna drive me nuts 😅
Same. And yet I've watched till the end.
Then I turned.
And left.
So I'm not the only one who was traumatized by this weird turning animation!😭
Oh I will never unsee this
This is the best thing
By Andraste's dimpled buttcheeks, you have ruined everything! How in Her holy name shall I ever be able to unsee it! xD
You could always avert your eyes. And turn. And walk away. In that order.
PLEASE WHY IS THERE SO MUCH CONTENT FOR THIS😭
I should go
BioWare turn vs Studio SHAFT head tilt.
SHAFT's Head Tilt was done out of a stylistic choice, the BioWare Turn is a result of crunch culture. Particularly with both DA 2 and DA: I. As both games have rushed development cycles and mismanaged leadership decisions.
aaaaand it's back in veilguard lmfao
Mass Effect clips would have stretched this to like 90 min
Everytime I talk and turn this is what I imagine.
Also that strange sitting to standing animation 😅
Once you notice it, you can never unsee it.
The other fun thing to notice is that cutscene animations are different than in game animations for female characters when they are walking. Nothing is more jarring than watching them go from mostly feminine hip sway (in game animation) to waddling like they have an atomic wedgie (cutscenes) 😂
Too much sass in each turn
Thanks, I will never unsee this 😂
I hate and love how much I love/hate the Bioware turn.
Feelings are complex
gotta be honest tho, I like that turn around animation. I didnt notice it was used this often tho.
Since the Mass Effect 1 days. Golden
