- I love the Minecraft Ancient City. It is very cool and mysterious! Since the first time I saw it, I wanted to restore the city and see how it used to be before the Sculk and Warden took over and ruined everything.

You mentioned something I love: The idea of the people spending the last weeks of their life ripping up carpets to mask their footsteps from the warden, sneaking around trying to scavenge what they can. I love it so much
Yep that is actually a really dramatic and amazing idea I loved that too
It was the pillagers who placed the carpet.

I just notice how technologicaly the ppls from those cities were superior than the one from now
Its interesting how specifically a social place was covered in wool. These ppl needed to store wool somewhere and ofc the place to spend time and have fun was the one to become obsolete and then was turned into a storage.
Can you imagine a mod with a rare chance of coming across a non ruined city like this?? Maybe not villagers down there, but some sort of inhabitants? 😍 I'm in love. Great build!!
Wouldn’t it be sick if you could fight back the skulk saving the city and allowing villagers to sell new skulk themed items
@@jamcpmm5853 I love the idea of the skulk being a growing threat to the world that needs to be fought back. I swear I need to meet a developer cause the ideas I have are so good and I hate that I don't know how to make them.
that would be cool but wouldn’t really fit the suggested timeline. perhaps a mod that takes you back in time to whoever built all the things
@@trulers8713 Yes! Sort of like the corruption/crimson mechanics in terraria, right? I've seen mods that extend the nether blocks from portals, but sculk would be neat for that too
I can imagine an advancement (the last of us)
If anything, this makes the ancient city even more haunting, seeing how nice it looked and how fallen it is now
Theory: Telgese we’re the original builders like Steve: portal knowledge, advanced building and structures, and most Zonbies spawn underground and look like Steve- perhaps the Zombies are tied to the corruption of the Skulk…. 🤔
@@johncloud3823 but that's just a theory
@@The_twistedphantoma GAME THEORY
@johncloud3823 See I follow a different theory. I believe minecraft is all about evolution rather than 1 singular race being the starting point for everything. For example we know that endermen have similar structure to Steve and they've been on the minecraft much longer than us. What are the chances that the endermen may have been the starting point for something big. Not saying they're the ones who made things like the pyramids or aquariums. Either that or Illagers obviously having the ability to use certain blocks as shown in their structures
I adore your recording and editing style!
It’s crazy to see the transformations how the city was almost unrecogniseable because of the sculk, it’s actually really creepy how powerful the sculk is
Okay now hold on, the social space at 9:20 is so cool with all the wool around it... granted before the skulk they wouldn't have had the wool but after the skulk came they incased the area so they had a safe space to speak freely. Which is just such an amazing in universe detail to me.
It's a destroyed camp. The wool is from collapsed tents. That's why it had a campfire below.
the reason why ancient cities spawn close together, is because they mainly spawn under the 1.18 mountain biomes so you often find them bunched up under mountains.
thx for all the likes 😊
I found 2 ancient city side by side in my survival world.

I think the “social area” that was covered in wool might have been a tent built by new explorers while exploring the ruined city
Or just some comfy sofas
@@Rayvenns might be where the original stockpiled wool or buried themselves in wool to speak together
@@RealAdelie wow interesting take! So many possibilities
Huh, I thought it was a wool "roof" that collapsed on the area. That makes sense
well if you actually look at it it is the same wool that is in woodland mansions, so all the dark oak and blue wool down there is from them not the actual city's inhabitants
The ice box rooms kept meat frozen, they were used back in the day before freezers were a thing, can still find them in european ruins, you would put a decent amount of ice in there and due to to the design of the building and the vent sysem the cold air would cycle, thus keeping everything cold - to prevent rotting meat etc.
what meat are you supposed to get underground?
@@huwale mutton, from sheep :)
@@huwale they probably had livestock down there so the people won't starve.

I think people build those to make snowballs in case they need some to decieve the warden
This is probably the best depiction of what the ancient cities would've looked like in their glory days. It really contrasts well and instead of the ruined hell that it once was has now been transformed and reinstated into this beautiful masterpiece. I definitely would use it as a living base because of its bright contrast and ease of accessibility. You nailed the center part of the city! Love the portal illusion and the way you managed to make this transformation possible!
I personally imagined that the ancient city bricks and structures were lighter in color and it became darker with time, moisture and stuff. But this is just another level, it looks so amazing!
You're the first one I see that actually restore this instead of transform it into something more creepy. I really like how it looks tbh.
I appreciate the practical design of this place like adding farms, access to water, etc. It really feels like a real city now, and the terraforming does a great job of showing it all off 👍
the wooden watch towers and "social spaces" with the campfires were presumably from the pillagers that explored the cities after they were abandoned, that is why you can see similarities and how the pillagers got special items like the totem of undying etc., they looted them from the ancient cities.
Not really.
Yeah. But about items, no not really
The pillagers would have hot killed by the warden
If they built a bunch
@@ducksongfans they did, so more came with wool. its why you can see different, brighter coloured wool across the city. they used to wool to get around
Before refrigerators, all of the ice was stored in a giant insulated cellar. They collected the ice in the winter, and used it throughout summer. If you needed ice for anything you just hopped down to the ice cellar.
I always felt like the Ancient Cities were populated by Dwarves before getting overrun with Sculk
Dwarves are known for building and crafting.
What if the wardens were the guardians of the ancient cities but got corrupted as the sculk invaded it?
They could've been a sort of golem!
I like this theory!
@counter zero very similar theory to Matt Pat's
@counter zero personally my take is the people heard a legend of a 3rd Dimension similar to the Nether and The End, The people decided to do experiments and built a City to do so, They opened up a Portal to the Unknown using Soul Fire, Whatever was on the other side was evil and wanted to corrupt the world, Destroy it. Then a huge battle happened and the last thing the people who lived here did was closing the Portal they worked so hard to get working. But Skulk has spewed out of the dimension destroying the City and now, even though the Portal has been shutdown, The Skulk Shriekers allows one of the creatures from the other world, The Warden to enter the Overworld via the Skulk and Attack whoever dares to visit the ruined city. As to what happened to the People. Some died the day the Portal Opened and the ones who survived managed to seal the portal shut. And abandoned the City in ruins, leaving it underground to keep the Portal hidden and not let anyone reopen it.
@counter zero Decades of Decay, The City has crumbled, The Skulk has also begun spreading around the area due to the Mobs, as the Skulk consumes their flesh and grows. As for the Portal. The way to open it has been lost to time. No one knows how to reactivate it, but its best that no one opens it. Whatever is on the other side is not friendly, Creatures even worse than the ones in the Fiery Pits of the Nether or the Ender Dragon and Endermen of The End.
@counter zero or maybe the warden is from that dimension,so the ancient people was experimenting with things, but one day, they accidently open the portal and the warden and the sculk emerged from it,and began to kill the people living in it,so probaly the remainders of the ancient people, closed off the portal to stop the further spread,so years past by,and the ancient city began to slowly crumble, the materials they used to build this place lost its colour due to lack of inhabitants.
the icebox was probably like a food storage place, and i can't help but notice you added magma blocks into the larger pool of the spa, which is based on a roman bath and the larger pool would be cool, or room temperature, rather than hot!
i always had a feeling that the ancient city was based on ancient rome lol
Beautiful work! I giggled thinking about maybe the “mysterious ruins” were places like a post office and DMV.
Imagine being a mail guy having to deliver between ancient cities, and getting pulled over because your minecart's inspection sticker expired

“Sir do you have a permit for all this redstone?”

When I found that place I was in awe, and fixed it up with every piece and claimed it my home on my creative world. This was awesome and I even put golems, villagers and allys even my statues down there, I loved it
I love your style here. You took the ancient city the way it seemed to be intended to look, and added your own spin on it without going over the top. I love watching you and your friends doing those multiplayer games too!
I have a theory: what if the roofs were mostly flat to purposely collect water for drinking? Any additional source of water is great for survival.

I like how the ancient city turned into a brand new underground town so quickly
I like how the blocks, lighting and greenery turn the ruins from cold and desolate to actually a very nice place to live.
Restored ancient city layout looks like some kind of advanced tech city, where the buildings and streets are laid out according to some sort of circuitboard logic, centered on the portal because the very layout of the city is what programs such a massive portal to go somewhere.
String should work for limiting the glow berries growth just place it on the bottom or down as far as you want it to grow and it should stop growing when it hits the string

Hey. I did the same thing, though I was going for themed sectors as the bleak colors made it difficult to navigate and rather boring. I added streetlights and blue flame gardens, though yours is far more impressive and visually pleasing.
To brighten up the darker areas, especially the portal, I placed luminous blocks behind stairs and slabs instead of going the lantern route.
The portal, the Warden, the Ancient City, the uninhabitance. Here’s my lore to all of this. The Ancient City was built by people, being my guess I’d say the Ancient Builders were the ones that built it and when they designed the portal it released the skulk which brought the Warden into the world. The Warden was too overwhelming for the ancient builders and murdered all of them. Or so would be thought, as generations go on time and time some of the original ancient builders could have escaped. So they went and searched for ways to destroy the Warden, documenting everything they have found. They found some interesting things, as monsters started appearing after the Warden appeared. Most appeared to be the undead whilst others appeared to be huge spiders. The scariest of them all was a pure black entity that was one block taller than them and another was a green creature that would explode when approached. Upon killing these entity’s they dropped a pearl and gunpowder. As the Ancient Builders have no home they seek a new one but to their interest they find another portal. They look down at the portal and see the pearl they have inside one of the 12 slots but the only difference is this one has an eye in it. They want more, they need to know how to fix the portal and so they seek out a way to finish the portal. Long and hard they search to no avail, they created Mineshafts to search for clues underground but nothing helped. Some Ancient Builders learned witchcraft to, in hope, have potions in their future fight against the Warden. Their potion making skills were amazing but they then tried a new kind of potion that exploded creating something that they have never before seen. It looked as if they ripped a hole straight to the underworld. They entered into this dimension which looked as if they were in Hell itself. They called this place the Nether because it gave off burning souls and forever pain. They searched high and low through the Nether, finding what materials they could. They found a mysterious looking area, it looked like an underworld Jail house. They fought deadly monsters, none near as strong as what was previously fought but still stronger than monsters in the over world. One appeared to be an extremely tall black skeleton wielding a sword. They destroyed this monster and took its head as a reward, whilst taking a couple more while they were there. Adventuring further into the area they found what looked like a spawner of some sorts and before they knew it they got ambushed by the monsters that came out. These monsters shot fire balls at the ancient builders and could fly. The ancient builders, frightened and scared, only killed around 7-10 and took their drops which looked like dust and rods. When they returned to the over-world they abandoned the portal entirely vowing only to go back there if ever needed. They then set back for home, with the third portal. They continued to document all their learnings and learned so much they made a library and filled it with all their books. They were not yet finished though as they still had so much more to learn and so some set out to Wander and search for new inhabitants to seek out help and they could trade with while others were over the plans and decided to leave and live a happy life in a village. The wandering traders, however, did plan on returning once they had news. Two or three would decide to wonder off together in the extreme cold climates so they wouldn’t freeze to death, they would build Igloos so they could stay warm until they were ambushed by monsters. They fought them off bravely until one was gotten, it looked as if he was normal but he wasn’t because he was dead. They locked the undead up under the Igloo in hopes they could find a way to cure him. If the Wandering Traders didn’t plan on going in the cold they would take a Llama or two to keep them safe from enemies. Some Wandered deep into jungles and far into vast deserts, both were on the verge of dying however and created temples for the future travelers that found them have the treasure they were hiding. Some traders traveled the ocean and traveled so much they became pirates, eventually crashing and dying leaving only their buried treasure and boat remains behind. The Builders that learned witchcraft, however, secluded themselves too much and with their potions gone insane and would kill anything or anyone that comes near. Finally after traveling so far a Wandering trader finds what looks to be a ginormous wall that leads to the sky. Everything about this place seemed odd to him and it looked like if it was the edge of the world. He knew it was dangerous as it was day out and monsters were everywhere, but what he learned was even crazier. Hurriedly he ran back to his friends and told them what he had learned, they instantly looked at the portal like they were ready to enter. They needed more materials so they returned to this massive wall and knew it wasn’t normal. Something big created it, the only thing they could think of was the Warden. They trained and obtained full Diamond Armor and Weapons with good enchants then returned to the portal room. The powder they acquired from the fiery beast ignited the eye and one by one they filled in the portal pieces until it was full. Then the portal opened to a dimension not set foot to their eyes. The place was full of those tall black creatures, possibly their home. They ventured further and saw great big towers of obsidian and in the middle was a pedestal, on top was an egg and the portal that lead out of there. They thought that only an egg and the portal couldn’t be all there is so they started to dig, they dug and dug and dug until eventually someone found something. It was a green chest, a chest none have saw before. Inside were totems, they had no idea what the totems were for and took the chest and all the totems and held onto them for safe keeping. As they tried to leave one tried to grab the egg, nocking it down cracking it. All the others leave as it’s a broken egg while the last one watches and see’s the creature inside open it’s eye and look at him ready as if it was going to kill him. He hurriedly gets out of there before it lets out a frightening roar and the portal closes. They all pass through the portal and because of the monster there closing it the eyes inside of it explode leaving only three left. As they had no need to worry they believed that they were ready for the fight against the Warden. They marched their way back to their city to take back what was rightfully theirs. They all charge into the city thinking they had a chance but no, the Warden booby trapped the whole place so he would know when someone was coming. As soon as they entered the Warden was already onto them, murdering them almost instantly however they didn’t die. They had something float over their heads and to their surprise it was their totems. They all fled or tried to escape from the Warden as he was still too powerful for them but little did they know as time went on the power of the totem that brought them back from dying slowly turned their minds to mush and became what is known as the Illagers. They went and made Mansions and Outposts across the world, ready to kill anything or anyone that is not one of them.
That was amazing. If you wrote a story, I would definitely be the first to read it.

Great story. I wish you'd create video with this "lore".
The big "Ice box" was probably where the people of the city would store their food, meat especially to preserve it, think of it as a massive freezer
In medieval times there were ice houses to store food. It was like modern day fridge but a lot worse

David:"Fine."
David entered the ice house and tried grabbing various meat but ended up slipping onto the floor.
@bruhsnacc831 may his soul. Actually it won't be in peace cause it's in the sculk now.
I'm just curious from where did they collect the "ice" for the "ice house"?
Not even medieval, in England I see places all the time used as late as the early 1900's on big country estates. Fishing towns and villages also have huge ice houses for storing the days catch right by the docks.

It's also used to store food
It was prolly used as a fridge for food
nope. it has food in the chest
@@jerrjohnpresti could be both.
It's actually more likely a food preservation building. Remember: Without refridgeration, putting things in a very cold space is the next best option to keep food fresh for longer.
With the massive portal like shape I feel as if maybe the inhabitants were experimenting with portals and opened one to the dimension that the wardens inhabited and the skulk started to spread through allowing the wardens to invade and take over.
Love the idea of this. I’d love to mine and come across this occasionally in ruins and occasionally filled with live and a hidden civilization with no mobs in site.

The wool in the social space was the top of it. It fell from the top it used to be a tent.
This is such a creative idea and I think you did a great job! I think adding some extra color and life to the city, like with the houses, really added a nice touch
Only kinda wish that he used wool floors in more places, since it was important to them to keep the skulk from hearing them
the warden is a axolotl
This looks so warm, inviting and lively. I get why the ancient people lived here. Shame about what happened to all the others
Dude I wish I had the patience to make the Ancient City look this good. You did an amazing job, plus this convinced me that we need underground villages.
I love how you just go in to rebuild the place, but in the end putting all this time into making all the lore of who they were and how they lived. It's like writing your own bit of history. I like how you put down all the moss so it still has that shulk vibe. I was really hoping you would combine it with a lush cave theme, that was a nice touch. Good job though, your efforts are well rewarded.
Oh btw I think the wool structures were tents with campfires for party’s or after the warden when people were tryna survive
The best way to reconstruct an ancient city is by a datapack that also changes the size and attachment points of the said structure.

You should add pathways between the merged city and the non-restored city, with maybe a quarantine wall sealing off the sculk city.
It would be sort of heartbreaking if you used to live in an ancient city and then you eventually came back to see it covered in skulk and destroyed, but still it would be awesome to let even that kind of city. Very awesome build. I hope it was worth the amount of time it took
Beautiful!! Good work. I personally think more soul lamps would've been more faithful lore wise, but this does look a lot cozier
I thought that too at first, but maybe the lanterns turned blue because the inhabitants' souls merged with them after they died.
@@droidy365 that makes sense. Like how is anyone suppose to see with this limited lighting of these soul fire lanterns?
The choice to remove the sculk is actually rather interesting. From the portal, traps, and artificial nature of the Warden itself, it seems the sculk is some sort of defense system left by the inhabitants themselves. If you use that logic, you turn it around from an infestation to more like the city's defenses are dying.
The sculk may be an invasive organism that came through the portal.
@@Bluestonezee yeah cause they weren't really on good terms with the warden. It kills. Everything. Plus given how absurdly powerful it is. It was able to increase the sculk infestation quicker cause there ancient city was probably more crowded.
If i had to guess, the sculk is some sort of experiment gone wrong, as seen through the secret lab under the portal. The ancient city scientists created sculk, and the Warden by proxy, and it ended up slaughtering everyone in the city feeding the sculk infection.
Im pretty sure the "flat height of the stone structure thoughout city" is just the foundation, the building is possibly wooden - stone hybrid. It just that the wood rot/get consume by the sculk
This is an amazing build. I sit here slack jawed in awe at what you've done.
The fact that you can make the ancient city into a oasis for dwarvens is a pretty interesting idea

Such an amazing work !!! I love it so much !
this is insane! great job. one thing i wanna point out is all the dark oak, so those watch towers, random bridges, blue wool, is likely the remnants of some illiger explorers
Not gonna lie (NGL for short), it looks so clean and it looks so beautiful. You did a good job reimagining the Ancient City back to it's clean state.
The ice box is how they stored food in the cold, basically an ancient fridge/freezer
Nice to find another Norwegian on the internet 🙂 håper dagen din går fint
Can’t help but notice that the color pallet of the original ancient city is similar to the Pillager mansions. Dark colors, dark oak, and most notably the blue and cyan wool, which can be found in the mansions as well.
Something that was pointed out to me is the structures containing dark oak and blue wool look foreign and slapped onto the stone structure. The wool elsewhere is gray. Like the pillagers found the city and set up "campsites" and lookouts to study the area. It does make sense given the pillagers magic dealings with life and death, studying the Sculk and it's relation to XP and death.
@@dr.eximus Definitely an interesting assessment. The colors definitely stand out. My guess is that it was either the pillagers, or potential predecessors to the pillagers.

10:40 this sort of feels like the thanos snap but in reverse
The ancient city looks absolutely incredible the work that you did
Wardens are probably just a hunting mechanism of the sculk.
I think many, many of us have thought of the same thing - clear out the skulk, light it up, bring back villagers.
The trick is everyone's different vision for what a pre-skulk city would have looked like.
Most evidence points towards there never being a pre-skulk city. The whole entire thing was very clearly designed to accommodate the deep dark.
0:01 who built it ?
Me: the creators
According to disc 5, whoever lived there fled thru the portal to escape some monstrous creature, presumably the Warden
Not really.
No the Sculk came from the portal, they opened to escape the wither, but they were then cornered by the wither and the sculk.

The foley you added during you before and after montage was pretty cool.

This is the most fantastic restoration I've ever seen!! It's both terrifying and inviting at the same time!! Well done! You got a new sub from me! :)
8:41 in Minecraft it's a little redundant since foods don't need to be cooled, but the best way of preserving foods that couldn't be dried or pickled before we invented cooling elements was ice from iceboxes and ice caves. When well insulated they could stay cold for entire seasons at a time, so when snow fell in the winter people carried it to places like this to make ice boxes and preserve it to fuel their cooling chests (ice in top compartment, cool air falls down and to bottom compartment and keeps food stored there cold). Considering they lived underground, they probably needed a good way to preserve meat and ration it out.
as far as i know, ancient cities spawn at the center of meadow biomes ( / the other mountainous biomes) that don't have an ocean closely adjacent to them. the double portal city was two seperate cities in the same cave, so i would assume that the surface area had two seperate mountainous biomes touching, or an exceptionally wide one.
you can also prevent glow berries from growing too far into the build with string at the tips where you want them to stop. they'll still fruit and light up as normal.
entire place looks great, and i could definitely see this as a structure mod or something similar, spawning in lush biomes rather than deep dark. very inspiring, even a year later :)

I'm assuming it was two cities that somehow kinda morphed together. I'm not sure the rarity rate but that has to be pretty rare to happen
0:08 because MatPat already did
You probably get asked this alot but what shader are you using? And list any other mods used that give this wonderful look.

If he only had known the lore...
Hi I love these videos! I can tell this is going to be so amazing!!!

I did something like you, but I tried to stick to the original as much as possible and it turned out very well and it still stands.
Absolutely beyond amazing build. Imagine if the game actually had a mission where you have to rebuild the ancient city. An after you did the central area with that portal looking thing. Actually opens up and transports you to a whole new area of Minecraft. Where you have a new mega boss to fight and a whole new area of new blocks, trees and other things to find.
The scouting tower could be one of the Illager's build since it is made of dark oak. There's also traces of light blue and blue wool used near those tower so it could mean that Illagers explored this acient city once but abandoned because they weren't ready for the threat which is the Warden.
Ancient city: “exist”
Minecraft TH-camr: I can restore you
it actually pretty common for two cities to spawn in each other
5:35 I'd like to see you do this with the Nether Fortress and Piglin Bastions among other MC structures 😅
I have an idea for a portal build. Use water. But also build a trench all the way to the surface so you could access the overworld from the deep dark very fast. Maybe put some spots to stop off for air along the way. Could even use lighting to add some cool visual effects along the way
