  • After a week driving the 2019 Ford Ranger XL STX around I've got 5 likes and 5 dislikes. Overall, I'm happy that Ford brought the Ranger back and it's extremely capable for this class, but I feel like Ford cheaped out in some aspects. This truck is based off the overseas models and could be even better. These are just a few things that came to mind after living with the 2019 Ranger for a week. Let me know what you think and what you like or don't like about the new Ranger.

I have my issues with the new Ranger... I have taken one on a test drive for about 20 minutes. There is a couple of dislikes that nobody has complained about yet.
      1) The bed is too small 5' length is too short. The minimum length should have been 5.5'
      2) The price is too high. The model I test drove had a sticker price of $50k (CAD). For that price, a F-150 would be a better choice.
      3) No trailer brake installed. Not even offered on their Trailer package. The the weight that this vehicle can tow, it should be considered. In provinces like BC. Trailer brake control is mandatory. The GM Caynon/Colorado have that as an option.
      4) No diesel engine option. The European/Australian model has a diesel engine for their vehicle.

$35k isn’t basic lol. It’s too expensive for what it is. I like the Ranger overall, but not at that price point.

I love our 2019 Lariat, I actually made a platform that goes in the rear floor when the back seat is up, put carpeting on it, for luggage, dogs, ECT, light weight 2'x4' plywood with feet to make it even. Cost me 7 dollars. Awesome truck!

Prices differ from city to city and even within a city itself. I bought 2019 Ranger XL crew cab w/ towing option. It also came with a tonneau cover, cruise control, remote mirrors, backup camera, electric windows, fog lights, etc. In south TX - Rio Grande Valley, the basic truck started around $32K. In Houston, it started at $31K. I found my Ranger in Katy, Tx at $29K before TTL. I ended up paying $29K w/ TTL. I also have a 2001 Ranger space cab w/ 217K miles and still doing great. Very basic w/ a/c and radio which I replaced with a Blue Tooth radio. I compared it w/ my wife's 2015 Toyota Tacoma crew cab and my nephew's 2019 Toyota Tacoma crew cab and the Ranger beats them in quality, comfort, amenities, mileage and being super quiet. Yeah, I had to make a 700 mile round trip to get it, but it was worth it. Hope this one holds up as well as my 2001 Ranger.

Ordered a Ranger which will be delivered mid-April. After watching a zillion clips on the Ranger and owning an '05 for 157K miles the following strike me as needed. Clearly the bean counters got in the way. Here's what is needed IMO:
    - Extended cab rear doors need to open like the F-150, i.e. 170 degrees vice 90 degrees. This is huge. Think about in a parking lot and trying to put groceries in the back. Really wanted the 6' bed but because of the rear door not opening all the way, ordered a Super Crew. The 90 degree thing is a constant source of a PITA on my '05.
    - Super Crew needs a split rear seat that, when the back is unlatched, folds flat and locks IOT make a usable flat surface.
    - Auto dimming rear view mirror
    - Heated steering wheel. Wife's car has it and although I never thought about it before, in the cold climate I live, it really is great.

My only quibble is actually my wife's. I have to keep a small step-stool in the bed of the truck so she can climb up into it.
I have the two wheel drive version of the same truck, but I am older, and it's my to and from work ride, and carting my grandkids around. The rear bench seat let's me more easily than the jump seats in my old one.
They love Granpa's new truck. So does their Granpa.

I have a 2019 Lariat model (pretty well decked out), and I absolutely love it! .. I am towing a 25' RV trailer with it and so far it has been towing it spectacularly !!. . I was nervous about towing such an RV with a mid-size truck, but my Ranger has been doing a terrific job of it. Many of the displikes you explain here (except for the rattle) I share. There are a few things I would have liked them to have designed a little bit better. And I would have rather had the 2.7L EcoBoost motor .. wish Ford would have had that option available .. I would have bought that one! .. All in all though, I love my truck !!!

i have the 2017 Ranger FX XLT turbo Diesei, Made in Australia and sold in Mexico. Love it. Its a lil over powered, but I installed 36 inch tires and they do not spin as easily when excellerating. I have the 6 speed automatic transmission THe electric steering,, electric heater (instant heat) are nice. Mine has the built in refrigerated cooler, Keeps my cervesa nice and chilled. Boise stereo, touch screen, It will go anywhere my hummer H2 Sut does.. Drawback is that it has very little storage in back seat. Factory installed Flairs fire extinguisher, jumper cables, plastic caution signs, amd tire tools..are included and you can barely get your rifle in behind the seat.. LOve it waiting on my 2020

@@PrimeAutotainment It's going to take awhile for the dealers to have stock. I'm hearing allot of capacity issues at the Wayne plant. They really need to make 10K a month before we see inventories on the lots. Most dealers are charging full MSRP and some putting huge addendum markups. Once the early adopters and pent up demand gets filled then the MSRP is going to get ugly for Ford. I mean REALLY ugly. When Tacoma's start looking like a bargain then you have a major problem in Houston. Plus you have just added yet another model to the segment mix. Things just get more saturated and competitive. Ford's bundling of options are very compromising and much less flexible then the competition. This just drives up costs excessively. And IMO, will break many sales decisions for buyers. Ford does it because they want to make buyers pad up their trucks more. But it will backfire at some point. These price points are wack. Right now they can get have their fat margins. But at some point, the price points are going to bite them. Hard. And it already is IMO. I ended up buying a Nissan Pro 4X mainly because I don't see the value in the new Ranger. Not even remotely so.

    • @doggedoutdoors6206
      @doggedoutdoors6206 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

HiPlains1 Not hard to be cheap when you haven’t changed the platform in 10 + years. Great trucks but they’re eventually going to be redesigned and cost more money. Ford isn’t the only manufacturer that has increasingly higher prices. I will agree with the lack of flexibility on options. IMO I should be able to start with a base truck and select the options I want, not packages with things I’ll never use.

I don't see why Ford doesn't want to have the 4 cylinder diesel being sold in US. In fact, the 2019 Ranger sold in US has the same style and looks sold in the Philippines since 2018.

Good Review, Dont agree with all your points but that's ok!
I came out of a 2009 Ram 1500 4x4 Big Horn Crew HEMI I bought new so I'm use to a big truck, high HP and low MPG. My soon to be 16 son is getting it so dad got to pick a new ride, though I like full size trucks I no longer need as kids gett'n older and also work demands changed. Drove everything past 6 months that caught my eye from cars, small/med/large SUV's. Came REALLY close to a mid-line Jeep GC, friend asked me if I drove the 'new' Ranger. I drove a Taco, both GM's mid's with 4/6cyl. In the end just didn't do it for me.
Though Ranger is not perfect and if you have seen my other comments I'm Not a 'fan-boy' and in Ranger5G I've actually been hated on for giving my honest opinions good/bad. I call those owners part of the 'Ranger Drone Squad'. NOW I'm not going to list/discuss every like/dislike again. BUT I will say in the end I test drove this on a few occasions at a few stealerships in different trim/models before I bought and overall was impressed enough to buy it and so far I like it to a average level of high 80%. I bought it July 3rd this year..
I am taking into account that the vehicle I drove for a decade I really liked [loved? strong word but sure], it was paid off for past 5 years and Still has two warranties in effect one is a $0 deducatble E/P factory warranty & $100 MaxCare factory warranty BOTH are lifetime to original owner and nothing NEW [of any make] I was looking at came close to that level of coverage. So you all know why we are keeping it until the wheels fall off!
Bottom line Its a nice little truck that has more + than -.. Ford can definitely make it better if they listen to their consumer base. We just had our first good snowfall in Chicago area and I got to really assess the 4x4 characteristics. *PASS* Was impressed.

I was interested in this truck until I heard Ford would not offer a manual transmission in the US. I doubt, since the whole F-150series is automatic only, that a manual will ever be offered.

I can understand nitpicking some convenience features as many of these things have become standards in many automobiles, but many aren't really that crucial. i.e. power mirrors. I have power mirrors on my current Ram 1500, but since I purchased it, made an initial adjustment, then a couple minor ones the next few days and I haven't touched them since. Very much the same thing I did with the manual mirrors on any previous Ranger I had ever owned that didn't have power mirrors. Same thing with cruise control. Unless on a trip where I was going hundreds of miles without stopping, I hardly ever touch cruise. I more or less tend to use it if I'm in a zone I know is heavily monitored by radar since I always tend to creep up on speed, it's just insurance I don't. Power windows I can definitely say should be standard since it's a real pain trying to roll a passenger side window up or down once your in and moving.

And there is no vehicle which is perfect.
Pickups here in Spain are not common. Since last year at least they are classified as personal transport. Before they were working vehicles and restricted in speed.

The dash rattle has been a complaint by several reviewers. I had that in my Tacoma and it drove me nuts they couldn’t never figure out what it was. I went and test drove one of these and unless you get the lariat 4wd or the tremor the other models are just too stripped down for the price of 34k msrp. The base model feels like a basic work truck a lot of plastic.

I love basic. Was pricing out a Ranger on the Ford website and it is a pain to try to get manual locks and windows. But I also want cruise control. Which comes with the 101a package which comes with a bunch of electronics that I don't want. All I want is ac, radio, and cruise control with a NA V6. Do you know if there is a way to get the stock cruise control added on after buying a base Ranger?
Hope (Not likely) they add a NA V6. I hate all of these turbo (ecoboost) engines. Work as a tech at a Ford dealer and 1 thing I have learned about ecoboosts, its that turbos wear down the motor quicker, and lots of coolant leaks with failed turbos that are expensive to replace. Ford missed the market on this one. Owners who have their old rangers love them. They love the manual trans and the 100Hp engines they had. They didn't tow 7,000lb boats with them. it was a reliable commuter truck that got great mileage and had just enough versatility to get jobs done. If you didn't know a trades person that didn't have one of these then you were living under a rock. They screwed the pooch here and made a truck for hipsters. I think all ranger owners wanted was a refresh but they went too far with the redesign. Ranger owners don't want 260hp and luxury. They want a seat and a steering wheel, reliability and fuel economy at a lower price point. I had a co-worker in the 80's that had over 400K on his diesel ranger. Yes diesel, they offered one. He drove the wheels off that thing. Bring that truck back with a refresh. Keep it clean and simple and affordable and leave the $70k F150 for the hipsters. Just keep it simple and stupid and it would sell like hotcakes.

Almost bought a Colorado LT. Allot of that was based on your excellent review on a Colorado LT awhile back. Right after I put in a pre order I found out about the whole shudder/torque convertor mess the chevy's have had since 2017 on the 8 speed. So I was lucky to get my deposit back. So what happened one day I went to the Ford dealer and they had two Rangers. A loaded XLT FX4 for 38K and a loaded Lariat for 46K. Even the XLT seems pretty plain. No leather, the stereo was meh. But it did have the FX-4 and most options. The Lariat was fully padded up. This particular dealer had gone mad and put a addendum on both for 5K more (market adjustment price). They were pretty rude about it too. My point to them was like you said the MSRP is already above the mid size segment price points. Literally an hour later I finally purchased a Nissan PRO 4X. The reason I decided to compare that purchase to the XL in this video is that I haggled the price down to just under 35K out the door. Exactly what you said this one cost.
So Let me tell you what 35K gets you with a pro 4X frontier. Leather, heated seats, 8 way power seats, dana locker, 60/40 split folding rear seats that fold flat, dual climate control zones, NAV, CD, SAT, BT, touch screen, 10 speaker rockford fosgate with sub, power sunroof, descent control, skid plates, bilstein shocks, spray bed liner with utility track, 31 inch all terrain tires, roof rack, heated side mirrors, rear back up sensors with camera, and the mighty VQ40 V6 with the heavy duty 5 speed AT OD that is rated the most reliable in segment. like the Ranger, its a torque monster. Time will tell how the ranger 10 speed holds out. Already having some issues in the full size GM/Ford trucks.
Handling, ride are great on the Frontier. Very planted and good steering feedback. Truck is old school heavy. Titan frame. All steel. Probably the only con I can say is the MPG's and a bit more cabin nose at interstate speeds but its not bad. Around town I'm getting 17mpg and HWY 20/21. But that is what 35K can buy with Nissan. Just saying. The Ranger XL next to a loaded pro 4X and you ask somebody which one they would want. Well I can pretty much guarantee what the answer would be. Oh, and if you want, you can also get the Pro 4X with 6 speed MT.
Excellent review. And for once somebody brings up a huge fault in the Ranger or global T6. The rear seat. I actually owned a Ranger XLT a few years back overseas and it had the 3.2 diesel. Quite different then the American version. And much better looking IMO. That truck is just made for that 3.2. So sad they dropped a eco boost instead. But the seat not folding flat and all in one piece was worthless. Only use was to get to jack. That's it. The the other con is the center stack. Pretty much right out of a fusion. The most untruck like setup. Tiny ass buttons, hard to read. Plus the power window buttons are slightly behind reach. On the Frontier, the center stack has bigger buttons, easy to operate even with gloves. Duh, that's what you want with a truck. power window buttons fall right at your hand. Ergonomically, the Ranger scores pretty low compared to the GM twins or Frontier. The Frontier is a older design but they did it right in the first place. The Ranger is also pretty old now. But the design had its flaws back when the Australians made it in 2012.

The 4 cylinder ecoboost literally outperforms every midsize V6 on the market in every way. I suppose you could argue they should give a V6 echo, but I'm sure that's what we'll see in the raptor, and it's going to destroy the market unless GM has something up their sleeves.

And one day I'll have no payment on my 2019 model. Mine should be paid for around the same time you'll need a new truck with a payment.

i almost went with the ranger but ended getting a 2019 TRD Tacoma. The Ranger did get my attention and it looks awesome. Its hard to go from a owning Tacoma to a new Ranger when i your in the market to buy a new Truck.

When Ford decides to make a Ranger with a regular cab(not a extended cab, or crew cab, a REGULAR cab), a manual transmission, a non-turboed 4 cyl. engine, and puts the MSRP under 20 grand, then we can talk.

They told me $450 a month to lease an XLT that only costed 37k and they wanted $1500 out of pocket I laughed and walked out I could get a 42k ridgeline with tons of options for 399 or a Tacoma for similar price

Been seeing this truck way back in Mexico & other countries, it's a nice truck but... No way would I pay that price for this truck? Would rather do a rebuild on an older Ranger... But to each it's own! If your young why wouldn't you want a new truck???💵💵💵💵💸💸💸💸💸💸

I like the ranger and I’m a ford guy through and through. I own a 01 ranger. But right now a taco is the way to go. 🌮 it will be my next truck. Yota makes some tough trucks.

McSlama Jama As someone who has owned a gen3 Tacoma, wait till the 2020 mode year. The seats are horrible and don’t adjust very well. 2020 brings a full 5 way adjustable seat and will be a big difference. I sold my 2016 over the seats.

I bought a taco last year and love it. It’d be nice if it could tow more, but I don’t really need that feature. I would worry about the reliability of the turbo on the Ranger, because when they go out, it’s pricy to fix.

Looked into the base model but passed due to no cruise control or auto locks. Ford's bean counters really missed the ball on shortchanging the consumer there and also not offering a manual transmission. Sorry but I shopped elsewhere...
