I used to have a 50-something inch CRT television. Expensive as hell when my family bought it when I was a kid, but it served us well into the LED era. It stood proud beside two plasma TVs and tons of LED monitors.

linus please cover color ratio!!! i always hear about monitors that have color ratios of 10,000,000 to 1 or 20,000,000 to 1 etc but what does it really mean.

Assuming you do in fact mean contrast ratio it has a flawed manner of being measured so I wouldn't worry too much about the number. I'd recommend to always look at the display in person before buying when possible or at least read a ton of reviews. Probably a good idea anyway because rating systems for monitor specs kinda suck in general, and don't really give you any idea of how the display will actually look.

contrast ratio is usually 1000/1 to 3000/1 the higher the better for blacks and thats native ratio, when see a silly number like 20,000,000/1 thats dynamic ratio which is basically a made up number to make it seem better when in fact 1000/1 is quite good.
So what is the point of cellphones with full HD or 4k display with less than 6 inch screen ?

One question I cannot find anyone mentioning, but I'm really interested to know. Is text on a 4K monitor with its downscaling features clearer/nicer to read than on a let's say QHD without downscaling? Or it depends on screen size, downscaling percentage, etc. Cause I'm a developer and I'm thinking about buying a 4K (or UHD to be precise) monitor, but since I'm 90% of the time looking at text, I'm thinking if it makes sense to spend money on a 27" 4K if the text is clearer on 27" or 34" (W)QHD. Since a 27 4K" is basically the same price as a 34" WQHD.
Linus mentions we should see "fine, larger" text on a 4K downscaled, so does that mean that it is still nicer than a lower res monitor without downscaling?
Looking for some advice on 4k gaming. Looking to buy a gtx 1080 and a 4k monitor, however as not all games will run amazing at 4k I may have to runs some/most at 1440p maxed out, but I've heard due to interpolation, 1440p can look blurry on a 4k display. ok, my tv says it's vertical resolution is 2160p (4k), I have it hooked up to my computer using an hdmi cable to a video card (geforce gt630) which shows the maximum digital resolution to be 2560x1600 .... My display shows in the resolution window to be 1920 x 1080 (recommended) .... ???? It won't go any higher. How can i fix it to go higher ?

hi i have a question. If I have a video file on my computer that’s 1920x1080, that’s 1920x1080 unique pixels forming the image I see in the video. So when I lower my screen resolution and the video is downsampled, does the video in reality still maintain the 1920x1080 pixels, but the display just makes it appear like it’s a lower resolution?

linus or someone please explain.what confuses me is that how is the same resolution maintained on different sized screens such as a 22 inch 1080 and and 24 inch 1080 because they both must have the same amount of pixels by length and width right? so does the pixel size change for each screen size?
this is the question I have been asking for ages. From my understanding, the pixel size stays the same, but they are just more tightly packed in the smaller display, reducing the space in between each pixel. but this still blows my mind because that means on a super large 1080p display, that means we are looking at mostly empty/black space.

Linus, how do the new 4k tv's stack up? i.e. the Samsung UE50HU6900S or LG 42UB820V. This might sound silly but the 1080p resolution + latency has always been 2 main reasons to go for a monitor to go along with the pc but 4k partially solving the problem what about a 4k tv as a monitor replacement? Ive seen the 42inch LG upclose and i must say the pixeldensity is amazing and its perfectly fine to sit close to it, being 650€ and an IPS panel its a pretty good deal. not the mention the smart tv functionality(upscaling/mediacenter etc)

Can anyone help me? I recently bought a new gaming monitor 244hz, and can be overclocked to 280hz. However the native resolution of this monitor is 1920 x 1080. For a certain game that I play, I like to change my resolution to 1280 x 960. This causes issues when Alt Tabbing between full screen games. Should I just get use to playing the game at the native resolution or should I able to play at whichever resolution I prefer? appreciate if anyone can give some advice, no matter how many videos I watch on this stuff, it is still so confusing.

Does a 720p video look worse on a 1080p than a 720p screen (both screens are the same size, say 23 inch)? Or will it just look the same?
Some people say it will look worse because of the video being stretched on 1080p screen.
However, I've been thinking as the individual pixels on the 720p screen are LARGER than those on a 1080p screen anyway, the 720p video would look just the same on both screens.
Then why a PSone game looks so much worse on modern screens? Then I thought we used to play it on CRTs which are usually small.

Great question. I, too, tell people to buy a 720p monitor/TV if they want to ONLY output 720p. To my understanding, I think that since 1080p is not double 720p (or divisable by 720p), there will be approximations. Like instead of a straight line being straight, the fact that the pixels on the 1080p are not in the same places as the 720p panel, it would make straight lines SLIGHTLY jagged. Maybe I am wrong, but that is my understanding. I'd like a FAP (ha) on that one as well.
720p on a 1080p screen will look worse. That's why monitors have their native resolutions, that's what they're meant to be used at. I've tried it in the past, and to describe how it looks, it's blurry compared to a native 720p monitor, if both were around 21" - 23".
Dylan Carr Just as a side tip, 1080p is more than double of 720p. UHD is four times as much as 1080p.
arasinais1997 Yes, 1080p has more than double the AMOUNT of pixels, but it does not have more than double the amount of horizontal/vertical pixels, which was what I was getting at. For example, If viewing 720p content on a 1440p monitor, it would look as if it was natively 720p. Why? Because 1440p has exactly twice the amount of horizontal/vertical pixels. When in a situation such as this one, the 1440p panel would have 4 pixels (a 2x2 block) in every spot a 720p panel would have only 1 pixel. This would prevent any previously discussed jagged edges and such from not using the native resolution of the monitor. Because 720p is divisable into 1440p, it still seems as if it was native. I hope you understand what I am getting at, and this further explains why I think that native resolution (or half of that) is the only way to use a monitor. Thanks for your input and for not being a troll, such as calling me a dumb ass or something simply because of the dissonance in communication. :)
Dylan Carr Pixels don't work that way, because not all content displayed on a screen is in 2D. When in 3D applications, we get polygons, which debunks the 1 for 4 pixels in a 1440p display running at 720p.

if your going for cost savings, the gtx 970 will do, but i would recommend the gtx1060, it runs slightly better than a gtx980 with a lower cost

If they're both 1920x1080p then they will both have the same amount of pixels, however, since the monitor has the larger screen the individual pixels will be larger

You can use scaling because if not, the text is gonna look microscopic.
its not really necessary, with a 15.6 inch screen 1080p will be sharp enough that your eyes won't see any pixels, and also it has good screen real-estate. having the 4k will just drain battery on the laptop, i wouldn't recommend it

IPS also does better color reproduction (so if your doing art or something it will also do a better job) and has better viewing angles.

Jesse Janitscheck While 7:3 makes sense mathematically, that makes it inconvenient when discussing aspect ratio, hence why it is known as 21:9. When someone hears 21:9 they think "Oh it's like a wider 16:9"

1440p should really be considered 2.5K. 2K makes more sense for 1080p which has horizontal pixels very close to 2K and what we consider 4K is further from its actually number than 1080p to 2K
Fixing what we name the standardized resolutions is a problem the world is not yet ready to handle.
Is it worth buying a 2560x1440 monitor as an upgrade from my1080P one? I don't want a 4K one as that's still hard to run maxed out with current technology and I need some more real estate for productivity purposes. I'm space limited so multiple monitors isn't an option.
yeah depends on the gpu you have. if you have the GTX 970 or the equalvant on the amd side. then it should be fine

stevob211 Yes. 27'' 1440p is great. my R9 290(GTX 970 equivalent) pushes games no problem in ultra at that resolution, and is a massive improvement visually over 1080p.
1080p 24'' monitors are a 91ppi(pixel density)
1440p 27'' monitors are a 109ppi(pixel density)
What that means is, you can sit closer to the 27'' before you see pixels AND you simultaneously have a larger screen, but in the real world, the larger screen will move you further away from the monitor, causing the higher pixel density to be even more noticeable. It is very nice on the eyes.
Can't wait for 4k to be reasonable, but I will be waiting a while for that :)
You don't need a 970 to run 1440p, a 4gb 680 or 770 will max most games on 1440p. I say this because my 780ti maxes ALMOST any game but theres the odd exception like crysis 3 which technically i still max out but i dont consider 30 fps to be playable. Yes it is way way better and definitely worth upgrading from a 1080p to something like a 27 inch 1440p, i did and best decision ever. Games look so much better at the higher resolutions, especially games that have really good graphics, i mean when i saw bf3 in that resolution my jaw dropped it was stunning. I do agree with nochalas though the 970 is the best price to performance card out there right now but not everyone can afford it so i was just letting you know you don,t necessarily need it to max out games.

It really bugs me that 1080p basically took over for 1920*1200 monitors. It even said on I believe it was BenQ's website something along the lines of "Yay, now we have full HD", which was the same as "Yay, less resolution!". Also, I woild love a 21:9 monitor with 144Hz and 1080/1200 pixels vertically. And I don't want much higher pixel density, so 4K sounds good for a 36" or even a 40" monitor, not 24 or 27..

don't bother with 2560x1080 29" it's too small imo. I have a 34um94 and i love it especially with movies. If you can go for the AOC u3477pqu since it got a good stand and cheaper than the LG. Also keep an eye out for the Dell curved one too. The LG curve isn't worth imo with a terrible stand.
But how do I know what aspect ratio my own monitor is?

Glad they sorted the awful things they did to help reduce the echo in previous videos in post. Linus without those things done to him but with the echo sounds much better. Try getting some acoustic foam on the ceiling to help it and it will sound so much better
Can anyone answer me on this: I have 2 monitors, and i really want to use one of them without having to exit my game everytime im have to change episode, music etc. I heard JayZTwoCents talking about his "peripheal" monitor, and that he could use it, without exiting.
