Oh man! Mind = BLOWN! I look back on all the pleats of my past. Where has this been all my life. I always thought of pleating boards as being these mystical things. I never knew that they would be legit this straightforward to make. Like, get the materials to have on hand and just make them to whatever dimensions I need whenever the next pleating project comes up. I'm sending you a virtual fruit basket.
I started out wantint to be a dress designer and I worked hard, my grandmother from the turn of the century showed me a lot, junior high and high school I learned a bit more, but then when I got to L.A. companies would hire me but before I knew it I was the sample model or some other thing. I don't think I was ever The Designer but more of a copy artist anyway. I have worked as an asistant to a designer. I come from Ohio and going to L.A. and stretching myself---but no one ever showed me a pleating board. I SIMPLY LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!!
I've just caught myself audibly gasping and yelling YOURE A GENIUS at this video. I never knew this was a thing but it's exactly the thing my sewing room has been missing! Thank youuuu
Having a box-pleat board for ruffles is amazing! Doing box pleat by hand is tedious but I have a handmade board that 16" long and 4" wide for my trim making. I can plop it down on any surface and use an inner "stick" (card stock strips in my case) to help tick the fabric in on both before closing the box with the fabric incased before using my mini Cricut iron on the trim.
Wow, this is incredible. I had no idea how pleats were made. When I was a kid, my mom used to make our clothes and sometimes she would go to a specialty shop to get the fabrics pleated for her projects. I always thought it was rocket science, until I watched your video. Thank you so much for solving the mystery for me. It's really surprising how easy it is to make pleats for garments. I wonder if you could kindly do a video on how to make Sunray pleats for a circle skirt made up of two semi circles. Many thanks in advance.
With this anazing tool, I might actually start doing something other than cartridge pleats! I'm absolutely loving the alternate pleating boards too. Pleats have always intimidated me, especially on thin and finnicky fabric they're a nightmare. But you made pleating that slippery fabric look like child's play with that pleating board! This is definitely going into my sewing arsenal. I may even make several boards for all occasions.
I hand washed a beautiful pleated Liberty wool skirt and tried to iron pleats back painstakingly, but it was not consistent. Now I kno how to fix this myself. Thank u so much!🙏🏻👍
I was thinking how brilliant is this until I got to the section showing an example of what pleating boards can do. Then, that gown literally took my breath away. Literally. I’m still somewhat gasping. Really. Thank you so much.
Thank you, that was a really helpful video. While I am not yet at bustle gown stage, I can see such a board already being useful when it just comes to embellishing a plain modern short sleeved shirt... give the sleeves an interesting edge for example... So, yes, definitely inspired by this video.
Wow! I just heard about pleating boards for the first time. This was such a great tutorial on making one. I'm still a bit intimidated 🤣 The garment you shared at the end of the video was absolutely stunning!
Hey I still have the question can it be washed after the pleases have been set? The video is amazing! It's such a nice look into how to actually make the pleading boards!
I think that is a great alternative. I do think that the carpet glue will be less likely to shift than the interfacing as I have seen repeated pressing make it fail. As Jalea says "Be sure to let it cool completely!"
Hello and TY for the video I would love to see the box pleat board in action please please please make a video of your diff pleating board. I found none and I did research a lot !! 🤩 god bless you
I love useful tools and this one looks brilliant. I will be making one (or more) very soon. Thank you so much for the how to make and use a pleating board.
Still, going through all the videos from Cocovid, I wanted to see as I was working last weekend and missed a lot during the first showing. Thank you so much for these clear explanations. Now I just need to make one (and first I need to buy the material). I was wondering if you could show us how the other boards are made. Me greedy? No, Not really
Fantastic! Also, have you thought of making a pleater board for the masks we are now wearing during the pandemic? Top with space for a metal band and three pleats and room enough to go below the chin is is the usual. Would be of great help to those who are making them and giving them away to those who can not afford to buy. Would save a lot of time.
Great - will definitely try this ! One question please.... What types of fabrics are suitable to pleat this way? Some years ago I had fabric pleated for me and they said to only use synthetics ---I prefer wearing cottons and viscose type fabrics.
My general rule is if it will hold a crease it will hold a pleat. Cotton certainly works well. I’ve heard spraying the pleats with diluted white vinegar before pressing can help set them with natural fabrics, although I’ve not tried myself. Lots of testing so you know what temperature to use!
No issues at all. I think that’s one reason to use a carpet glue type glues, rather than a craft glue. I do have a vented ironing board rather than a solid one. Good question though :)
Hello and thanks so much for sharing! Question please...do all fabrics stay pleated after dry cleaning or washing? They don't require some sort of starch or fix?
No, they don’t, I’m afraid. Dry cleaning might be better but I haven’t tried. These techniques are traditionally used on garments that aren’t really washed. You wouldn’t have to start from scratch as they are sewn in place, but all the pleats would need re-pressing.
if you want washable pleat, for, say, a dusty petticoat under a train, you can topstitch or edge stich partway down the pleat after it's ironed. It gets the nice regular pleating from the pleating board, and the stitching keeps it in place, mostly. I'm okay with some fluff in a dust ruffle, but you could use that stitching to re-iron without starting all over.
Thank you so much for this. It's going to be so helpful. Are there extant boards still around? I'm just curious as to when this started being a thing as it seems so clever yet simple.
I think they were patented around 1900 in some form, but I'm not sure. I know couture houses use professional pleating companies who have all manner of complicated pleaters, but they also have massive steamers!
If it's polyester, the pleats are essentially permanent, including washing, unless you iron them out. If you're using a natural fiber, this won't change the structure of the fibers like it will with polyester, so the pleats will fall out over time and will come out if washed.

This was great! I would love to see a follow-up video on how to make and use the box-pleat board.
Me too!

😍SOOOO GOOD! I've never seen this technique before. I love how low tech and simple it is to get that gorgeous finish.
Thank you! Pleats will never intimidate me again! (well... maybe just a wee bit). :)

I have a small pleater that I inherited from my mother's sewing aids. This is just an awesome video and thanks very much for sharing this. I loved it.
Meraviglioso il suo modo di fare le pieghe
This was a very informative video🙌🔥everything in just one short video, detailed and straight to the point. I love it. Thank you ❤️
I hand washed a beautiful pleated Liberty wool skirt and tried to iron pleats back painstakingly, but it was not consistent.

So I took my asthma meds. No but I still can’t get it out of my mind. I’m sending it to my grand kids who sew.
They will be astonished.
I would love to see resources on how to make other styles of pleating boards! This was exactly what I was looking for thank you! 😊
My mask making endeavors would have benefited greatly from a pleating board! Thank you for sharing!
Fantastic video. I see me making a pleating board in my future.
Thank you so much. It made the process easier.

Very very good for your York.
Those pleats were lovely! What a good tool. Thanks.
Aww yiss, now I can make a long Japanese pleated schoolgirl skirt without needing to use striped fabric :D
Oh my gosh, this is soooooooo satisfying to watch. Just poetry in motion.

Thank you~ That dress at the end is out of my dreams. I can't wait to make one.
This will be such a helpful tool! I shall certainly be making up a few for my sewing room. Very well taught!.
Thank you. This is helpful. I try it
Having just completed a natural form gown with hand-pleated ruffles I am eager to give this a go. Thank you!
Jalea it's nice to see you again. That dress is amazing.
Wow! I just heard about pleating boards for the first time. This was such a great tutorial on making one. I'm still a bit intimidated 🤣
The garment you shared at the end of the video was absolutely stunning!
You can do it! Even a flashy gown like that one is just lots of simpler techniques all added together :)
Hey I still have the question can it be washed after the pleases have been set? The video is amazing! It's such a nice look into how to actually make the pleading boards!
Oh! This is perfect! I love pleats and this will help so much with accuracy and neatness.
Thank you for sharing
This is a brilliant idea! Thanks for making a video on it!
I've been wanting to make one of these for ages! This is so useful. Thank you!
That was a FANTASTIC tutorial! I have always wanted one of these and had no idea how to make one. This makes it look so easy. Thank you!
Thank you! I'll be making a pleating board soon. I usually hand pleat everything. This is so much easier!
Thank you!! This has been the best pleated board tutorial I have seen. I feel like this is definitely achievable now. 💜💜💜
you can use iron on interfacing in place of the glue and cloth
I think that is a great alternative. I do think that the carpet glue will be less likely to shift than the interfacing as I have seen repeated pressing make it fail. As Jalea says "Be sure to let it cool completely!"
@@sewone3353 If you use a heavy cotton woven iron on interfacing like pellon 101 it works well.
Wow, you make that look really easy. And what a show-stopper of a gown! Brava, you are a marvel! 🏵🏆🎗
That is very cool. Thanks for the tutorial!
That looks really handy! I also like your no-nonsense way of presenting :D
Thank you 👏
This was amazing! Thank you so much! I think you just changed my life!
Thankyou so much!

Lovely! Thanks for the new skill!
Wow! Amazing.
Hello and TY for the video I would love to see the box pleat board in action please please please make a video of your diff pleating board. I found none and I did research a lot !! 🤩 god bless you
This a terrific idea, however, I want to make sheer curtains for my window and wondered if this would work on light material.
Thank you for this. Have to make one now!!!
THANK YOU! I found out about these on instagram a few weeks ago, and I'm fascinated. I must make one! THese are magical. Amazing.
I'd love if you show how to do the box pleats, only pleat I haven't gotten down at all lol
Not sure if it's what you need, but there's a section on box pleats in my trim video: th-cam.com/video/TuKX-kLWoRk/w-d-xo.html
Thank you Jalea, you are brilliant!
Brilliant
Hi Jalea!!! Thank you for this!!! I needed it.
This was very clear and informative. Thanks for sharing! By the way, the dress at the end is drool worthy. Gorgeous work!

This is beautiful and amazing. Thanks for sharing
Nice
You just answered a question I had since I was a child. How do they make those tiny pleats? … thanks so much for sharing!
Wow this beautiful .. pls what paper is used to make the board
Still, going through all the videos from Cocovid, I wanted to see as I was working last weekend and missed a lot during the first showing.
Thank you so much for these clear explanations. Now I just need to make one (and first I need to buy the material). I was wondering if you could show us how the other boards are made.
Me greedy?
No, Not really
mille merci
So nifty! Thank you for sharing:)
I made my own pleat board but it never dawned on me to attach it to fabric! Thank you for the help!
Fantastic! Also, have you thought of making a pleater board for the masks we are now wearing during the pandemic? Genius! New subscriber via CoCoVid!
Love the simple explanation. Definitely going to try this.
İts beatiful,Thank you😄👏🌼
Handy dandy li'l tool that is... 🌟
I would like to find something to make smocking quicker. Could I smock the pleats with a slightly deeper stitch?
Recently I am making detailed doll clothing and the hidden closure on some dresses and finding antique fabric is making me crazy
Hallo! Great tutorial 🔥
Thank you very much!
Can I wash this fabric? And what about pleats after washing machine?
This is awesome! Thank you! I love it 😍 Gonna make one very soon
So detailed and easy to follow, definitely trying this out!
QUICK QUESTION can I pleat tulle/chiffon/organza fabrics using this method?
I don’t think tulle or chiffon would stay pleated. Organza might, but it depends what it’s made of. If it will hold a crease then you might be fine?
how to make pleated circle skirt??
thank's alot

😻 That was cool 😎 🖖🏻
I wonder if you ever have any issues with the steam reactivating the glue that you've used to attach the fabric backing?
No issues at all. I think that’s one reason to use a carpet glue type glues, rather than a craft glue. I do have a vented ironing board rather than a solid one. Good question though :)
amazing!!!!
