    The nut is by graphtec. If you use a wound 3. String all strings are intonatable quite well; I use four wound, two plain on all my guitars. I have this exact guitar (Gibson SGJr) and it’s intonation is about perfect. It’s a brilliant guitar for sure.

    Great comparison. I ordered a Gibson this afternoon, so it's nice to be comforted in my opinion. Given that the Maybach is more expensive and a "copy", it never crossed my mind to buy it, but I didn't expect the difference between the two to be so noticeable. For all the times people complain about Gibson, we should also praise them when they do things right! I believe Tokai also makes a junior, and the price is about the same, but they are much harder to find. Now I just hope that the guitar I ordered sounds as good as yours!

    The maybach does have a dogear it's a reference to a surface mounted pop pickup

  • @ChristopherDowning
    @ChristopherDowning 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think it's basically the pickup is different - the Maybach is way more wound IMO. You're getting much more bass from it and the sparkle has gone. I always think you can mellow the sparkle but you can't put it back in if the pickup is wound to bring out the mids and bass (more windings). (The giveaway would have been if the Maybach had more volume) I guess you could ask Maybach to change the pickup if you did a special order? At that price they should do it for no more money?

    • @riowolfhart
      @riowolfhart  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment. I really had the impression when playing both guitars unplugged they sounded very very different. Sure, their both in that SGish tone land both yet very distinguishable. But your right: PUs make a huge, huge difference.

    • @ChristopherDowning
      @ChristopherDowning 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@riowolfhart I'd ALWAYS start from how an electric sounds unplugged - you can tell a lot about how its constructed and/or how all the woods and parts are working together. I'd always take a ringy, sonorous guitar from what's on offer. This is the great advantage to being in the store rather than buying online. i.e. try 6 guitars in store that seem identical and one will be better to you (not the best; just the best for you). It sounds to me like you preferred the unplugged Gibson and that hugely effected your decision - you can't outplay a poor sounding basic guitar before you plug it in. However the very next Maybach might be totally different and outplay everything. The more guitars you try in person the better - buying online is mighty hard to get it right!

    • @riowolfhart
      @riowolfhart  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChristopherDowning I agree 100% . At that time going to a store was not an option because of Covid and the Lockdowns. I´m sure if i would have spent more time i would have found a Maybach that i´d have preferred.

      Nachdem ich jetzt Instrumente beider Firmen besessen habe, bleibt mir nichts anderes als zu sagen: Maybach mein Leben lang. Diese Gitarren sind mit Worten kaum zu beschreiben. Mit Sicherheit findet man im Gibson Custom-Shop ähnlich gute Qualität wenn man lang genug sucht, keine Frage…aber die Tatsache, dass ich im Preissegment von 6.000 € aufwärts bei Gibson tatsächlich suchen muss um etwas vergleichbares zu finden, spricht mehr als 1000 Worte.
      Gibson hat seinen Platz in der Geschichte der E-Gitarren, aber das war halt einmal. Heute weht ein gänzlich anderer Wind.

    One thing about SG juniors is that they're cheap student models so you cant be afraid to beat them up. I have old gibsons and im very gentle with them. They'd collect dust if I didn't clean them. I have a $200 jr. copy and i write and play most of my best music with it with zero pretention about what it says on the headstock. The lack of Gibson logo helps me have no conscience about beating on it really hard like a junior deserves. Nowadays harley benton makes juniors that deserve a good thrashing. I'm looking into that when the one I've had for 15 years finally becomes unplayable.
    If either of those are good I wouldn't say they're good as a functional tool because if you use them for anything more than gentle hobbyist stuff you're going to lose a massive investment.

  • @randomdude9698
    @randomdude9698 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Apparently I'm in the minority but I prefer the Maybach. It sounds better to me and you can get it in TV Yellow. Also, the Maybach's pickguard and cutout carve are actually way closer to vintage '61 juniors than the modern Gibson. If you compare a Maybach or a '61 SG/Les Paul Jr to a 2020 Gibson SG Junior you'll see that the modern Gibson's pickguard is too small and the cutout carve is too shallow. I don't know why Gibson messed it up especially since their $3,000 "custom shop" version has the correct carve and pickguard.

      Nah you guys don’t know anything about guitar considering your basing your opinion on the fact it’s like a relic.
      The current p90 juniors aren’t supposed to be exact relics. They are not as bright or thin sounding as classics.
      Many people like the brighter tones because they feel it’s clearer . But many people prefer the warmth and body of never p90s juniors aswell.
      The brightness helps cut more in a mix but any p90 will cut much better than humbuckers in a mix .
      I prefer the Gibson , it has more personality in the tone. That warmth makes the tone more complex .
      Iv never cared for brighter is better mentality . I also have a slugp90 sg which is about as bright as you can get and it still have more body than this “relic” like guitar .
      If you like brighter guitars that’s one thing. But to say someone doesn’t know about guitars because they like another guitar than you shows you know nothing . And also it had nothing to do with sound according to your comment , just relic status .
