I like the EHX Ten Band EQ. More bands to fine tune. Only issue I have with that pedal is when you turn it on the lights are so bright.

FYI: These tricks work for most any eq pedal.

I started playing pro at 17, and when my guitar store “consultant” recommended exactly the same pedal it upped my sound to another level! I also soon added the same Phase 90 and compression pedal that Ed Van Halen was using. And I left the compressor on all the time with only slight gain and then kick in either a distortion or a fuzz. (Gotta be careful on squealing). Now I realize I should have used TWO EQ pedals, maybe a second at the amp, or maybe even between the amp and the cab, like someone else on TH-cam said? Anyway, definitely get an Eq. It’s absolutely a necessary investment that pays off immediately. Play on bro!

Dude. There are some many great pedals out there. Don't waste your money on a Boss pedal 👎

Also, small vintage amps that never seem to be able to handle humbuckers without getting muddy distortion - you can drop the low frequencies that are creating the mud and instantly all of those killer little amps work perfectly with humbucker guitars.

Do you put it in front of the amp or in the effects loop is the real question?

Dipping the 400hz on a Les Paul Humbucker is the way! I do it on my Tone King Sky King and also on my dry Ampeg VT40 amp. It’s a good trick hand back and let the bass instruments fill in. Just the Ampeg gets a standalone parametric EQ boost at 2khz-5khz at the end to cover top end tube saturation. But I find that 400hz-800hz with HB, sometimes problematic in some rooms. So I always run post compression before overdrive to subtle cut low mids, a Yellow Comp Tilt to roll off anything and finally a parametric onto one amp last for upper mids.

I regret selling this pedal to the pawn shop. I was 23 and needed weed money. Now I have a micro amp + that is as good, if not better.

That last setting you showed, Gretch, is how I generally set eq's for music with the biggest cut around 300-400hz to cut boominess.

Thought this was old hat. Then you hit me with the gretsch setting. That’s cool.

I like the Gretsch and fixed Wah settings. I bought mine with 4 other pedals with pedal board back in 1991 in NYC Broadway and canal St flea market for $125. A guy several feet away had a boss pedal board with 5 or 6 pedals and TU tuner and sold his for the same price to a guy. I still have them minus the board in 2024.

Using #2 You can use it as "Always on except for Soloing. This effectively becomes a Lead boost. It also allows for tweaking the guitars Eq curve to the amplifiers tone stack. This is also cool for tone color matching several axes to the amp as well, effectively making your amps tonestack happy with anything you throw at it signal wis, be it single coils or Humbuckers, Soap bars etc.
