since the scammers truck was in your driveway, maybe the camera of the neighbor across the street can see the license plate nbr, for the police to find the scammers.

A regular residential house needs only about 100 bales for a yard. Your size house might need 200 bales. what a scam..... I hope that your neighbors camera can get the truck license plate number to file with a police report.
DUDE I would have shut the door in that guy's face without paying more than 50 bucks and said " I'm calling the cops unless you leave, and if I see you around here again just know I WILL protect myself and my family" PERIOD! And after getting the license plate I'd still call the cops and tell these guys are going around scammin ppl.
Here's a thought....go to Lowe's.....buy some straw....take it home....pull some weeds and place the straw.....yourself. Woulda shoulda coulda. Best practice is not to answer the door. Good ol' hindsight.....In what you got yourself into....you should have called the sheriff out before you gave them a DIME. That way, it would all be on record. Your wife is right....give them what you feel like you owe them and release the hounds...lol.
