      It is kinda funny at first until you consider the victim is getting scammed not because of the usual reason of greed but simply for being kind of a dope. Actually, the ones that go after the elderly are the absolute worst. They prey on old people by making them think that they (the old person) has caused some problem by being old and confused. Most likely the old person has had issue before where they have gotten confused and caused some problem for someone. So now when the "IRS" calls them they feel bad and don't want to cause any more trouble so they send up falling for the scam.

    I was at work one evening, working the phones. I got a call from a scammer claiming he was the IRS and I had 30 minutes to avoid arrest, if I paid the debt immediately over the phone. He sounded very serious. Problem, I was an IRS examiner working in the IRS Service Center on Long Island.
    He hung up quickly.

    • @sharonjuniorchess
      @sharonjuniorchess 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So what is the IRS doing to stop people getting fleeced by these scammers? How about some national advertising campaign to inform the vulnerable. Doing nothing is not an option.

    • @mchapman132
      @mchapman132 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@sharonjuniorchess - technically, it’s not the IRS’ responsibility to prevent scammers. The IRS does state, in most form letters, the procedure how they contact people. If you notice on your federal tax form, there is a line for a phone contact number. You will definitely know if you have an issue with your taxes. CP2000’s are mailed out about 15-18 months after a filing. It takes that long for payers to submit info (W-2’s, 1099 ‘s etc) for comparison with a filed return. Any discrepancy will be calculated and a proposed bill sent out. If you disagree with the bill, you answer the notice and work with the examiner. If you wish to be contacted by phone, you can give a number to be reached. You will know if you can expect a call.
      The IRS will never call and threaten with an immediate arrest unless you pay over the phone. By the time a disputed tax liability has gotten to arrest, or property seizure, many notices and actions have taken place.
      Also, never give your SS# over the phone to a supposed IRS employee……….the IRS has ALL your info.

    • @sharonjuniorchess
      @sharonjuniorchess 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mchapman132 I know its not your fault & I greatly appreciate you taking the time to provide an excellent response & warning to people about what IS IRS practice and more importantly what is NOT - which is what these scammers do to take advantage of vulnerable people. However they ARE impersonating honest & good people like yourself so I encourage you to 'prod a few people within your organisation' to take a more proactive response to this problem. One person on their own cannot solve this problem but maybe if we all work together novel & creative solutions can be found. The fact that you took your own time to watch this video shows that you too are concerned & I commend you.

      @@sharonjuniorchess - thank you. My own mother was scammed over the phone. She was 83 at the time. My mom was an intelligent woman, cautious, no fool by any means, but as she got older and was widowed, she changed. She felt the need to prove she could handle things by herself, regardless of how much we tried to advise her…..she hated being “advised”.
      She gave her full name, address, dob, SS#, mother’s maiden name, and banking info to a stranger over the phone who said he was calling from Social Security. She had several thousand dollars stolen from her account.
      It’s common sense…….give no info over the phone.

    • @sharonjuniorchess
      @sharonjuniorchess 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mchapman132 that is very difficult for the family. Having worked in IT & Telecoms I believe it is not beyond the wit of Banks Phone Companies & Computer Network Providers to take advantage of technology and wrap extra protection around vulnerable clients to make it harder and raise alerts due to suspicious activity. Whilst elderly people can be given the feeling that they are in control there are additional checks & balances that could be deployed to flag up warnings & alerts that would slow down the process and allow others to check out what is going on before the transactions are processed. By profiling scammer behaviour it should be possible to flag up these incidents across the whole country as they happen & to send some sort of warning/alert to both the individuals their closest relative & even their Bank. I wonder if Bill Binney is available to help on this?

    I'm an Indian and I can tell you we are tired of these scammers ourselves! The worst part is that people fall for this kinda thing!
    I was at the bank the other day, and a guy comes in to fight with the manager because according to him, the manager called him for his account info and whisked the 1.2 million₹ he had in his account. The manager then explained that the bank sends out a letter in case of any discrepancy and gives about 2 weeks or a month to respond. Anyway, this guy lost his money. But this guy isn't the only one. I know people who have lost even upto 10 million₹ and despite repeated TV advertisements on how to beware of scammers by the various banks in our country, people fall for this BS.
    I get at least about 5 calls in a week, and for various reasons. Sometimes there's a discrepancy with my savings account or the 'loan I applied for' or whatever. And even though I'm not, I say I'm a college student, or I don't have a bank account. The guy hangs up on me the very next second! 🤷🏻‍♂️

    These people called me too saying that I have 24 hours to "pay" them or the cops will come to my house and arrest me. I told them "thank you for giving me a 24 hour window to pack a few bags, drive to the airport and leave the country" the guy on the phone went silent and didn't know what to say and then when I called him out for being a fraud he immediately started to cuss at me and threatened me. It's funny how butt hurt these guys get once you call them out. Pay to cancel an arrest warrant with gift cards? LMFAO! That's absolutely ridiculous.

      Last time they called me I told them I don’t pay taxes because I don’t work! So, I know they are liars! Then I just repeated, You’re a liar and God is watching you until they hung up! I do the same when they call claiming to be from Windows! On the latter I’ve also told them the I don’t own a computer or I say, don’t call someone in the Seattle area saying you work for Windows! We know better! 😂

    I got a scammer call just a few days ago. For real. It was a helpful guy telling me that I had a computer virus. I pretended to be an aged person with a disability...Oh yes dear,I am fine..now that I have got home from hospital. “Oh you have have bin in da hospital?” Yes, I had an accident...a very bad accident and I hurt my head. It was very bad young man, really bad and now I have a brain injury...but I am glad to be home...I have been home for two days..I think..is it Tuesday? Maybe it is Thursday...I can’t remember? What day is it? Do you know my son...he is a lovely boy? When I delayed turning on the computer...after ten whole minutes...I said “I am so sorry my dear, it is very slow” he responded with “Yes, like you”. I said “That is not very nice young man making fun of my brain injury!” Then I pretended to cry...quite loudly and between sobs said I could not talk to such a rude person anymore and hung up. Fifteen minutes of life that scummy scammer won’t get back.

    Its funny how the scammers started off trying to do an american accent and then a couple minutes in they forget to maintain it and revert back to their native accent. Its really hard to maintain accents if you aren't consciously doing it. Spies apparently avoid doing different voices for that reason.
