    What's funny is that every household had a different timeline on when they upgraded technology. So there are people who had things like flat screens early on and there are people who had box tvs until they were in their late teens like me. Grew up with VHS's, chunky computer monitors, cassettes, etc, and I was only born in 2000 (I'm 22).

    I’m from the last year of Millennials and work with people that are all from the previous generation. Yesterday, one of them said, “I remember hiring that person back in 2005!” And I had live for those moments I can interject with “I was a 5th grader that year, man.” I’m also terrified of the day my children hit me with those one liners to keep me in check.

      I'm from Gen X, and I can very much understand what you're going through. I'm at the age where I distinctly relish telling boomers, "OK, Boomer" yet being angry that I can't figure out some millenial slang. Some of it; real simple. But I had to ask a 19-year-old what "no cap" and "spill the tea" meant. Then I hear some older millenials talk about things like the newest iPhone, and I wonder how old I actually am (43, for the record).

    13:49 That was probably because of the Y2K bug. Apparently all computers were coded to write year numbers with only the last two digits (for example, 1900 was "00"). But this meant that 2000 would also be "00", and since home computers were relatively new at the time, everyone panicked and thought that this would ruin every computer in the world. The US government got involved too, and passed an act to ensure all systems were updated to fix this before 2000. It's debated nowadays whether or not the organized effort was even necessary though.

    I have a fun theory that one of the reasons why it's hard to keep track of the time between 2000 and now is that those decades don't have snappy and universally understandable names. Yes, we can call them ougthies and tens, but they never inherently morphed into distinct units of measurement.

    • @vii-ka
      @vii-ka ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I think it's because everyone was doing different things and couldn't agree on what to call the decades, but there's gotta be one universal event that impacted everyone though so I think they can be named after the most impactful events or series of events

      No I don't have some "Never older than 21" thing where I want to stay young forever. It's because 21 is the last age limit for all the stuff you get to do as an adult, In this case it's to buy anything stronger than a light beer.

As a result, these past few months simply went by so fast for me and I can hardly keep track of what day it is. There was a couple of tables and the lighting was a bit dimmed. More often than not, when the place wasn't busy enough the section was closed though. But they had a big room in there specifically for birthday parties, and all I specifically remember of the actual party was some cake, and some ice cream after visiting the kitchen. That probably was one my most memorable birthday party of my childhood!

    I was confused about the burning cd thing. But then I found out it's just a language barrier. See I'm Italian. And we used to call it mastering cds. And a common phrase you used to hear in this house was: "Does this cd player read cd-roms?" We had plenty of them that would get played in the car during trips. Fun fact that's not much related. But as a child my parents would constantly blast one kind of music in particular during trips. The fricking Queen collection box. To the point my brother got sick of it as child. Until he told mom he was proud of her for doing so, because he would've never been able to appreciate such musical greatness if he wasn't subjected to it so much.

      Even in English, "burning CDs" doesn't make much sense. It's just what we ended up associating with the act of writing stuff to discs. There was always neighbors that had the equipment, you'd go over and tell them what you'd want, they'd charge a small fee, and you'd go home with a set of endless fun.

    This reminded me of an arguement I had with my parents a couple days ago because they were watching a documentary about life on an aircraft carrier. They were salty about the fact that the soldiers got to have starbucks coffee - no, there wasn't a Starbucks on the ship, just starbucks ground coffee. They said it took away from the fact that you give up some "luxuries" when you go into the army. (I'm probably getting terms wrong, lol). Yet they didn't seem to complain when they doc went on to show that there was a STORE on the ship (which I did)!
    This is coming from my mom being the daughter of a member of the Royal Canadian Airforce. I may have never been a part of that culture, but I think those stuck on an aircraft carrier for 6 months at a time, trolling around without much action, deserve some better coffee.
    Anyway, I think this is a 'time passes and tings get better' thing.

    Honestly the manual car thing is usually only hyped by gearheads like me. Most of us like having total control of the gearbox, and the feeling of connection it gives. It’s fun to rip through gears. But even then I still usually prefer modern autos, especially if it has paddle shifters. It just depends on the car

      That's not related to driving the car. The guy here didn't get it. We used to do this TO START the cars when the battery died.

    My favourite "feel old memory" was back in the days nobody encrypted their WiFi hotspots, so you can freeride all of your neighbours WiFi as you wish, provided you have a big enough antenna 🤣

    Koolaid was popular, though - served in tupperware containers that had the faint taste of dishsoap.
