Song: Killing Me Softly with His Song
    Singer: Lori Lieberman
    Album: Lori Lieberman (released 1972)
    Composer: Charles Fox
    Lyrics: Norman Gimbel
    -
    ♫ Killing Me Softly
I heard he sang a good song
I heard he had a style
And so I came to see him
    to listen for a while
And there he was this young boy
    A stranger to my eyes
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
I felt all flushed with fever
    Embarrassed by the crowd
I felt he found my letters
And read each one out loud
I prayed that he would finish
But he just kept right on
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
    (guitar adlib)
He sang as if he knew me
    In all my dark despair
And then he looked right through me
    As if I wasn't there
But he was there this stranger
    Singing clear and strong
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song....
(then the final lonely finale orchestral plays on....)
    .

The lyrics of this song was based on a poem that Lori Lieberman wrote.
I first heard this song being played in a music store in Ginza in Tokyo in early February 1973.
The more popular Roberta Flack's cover of this song was released at least year after this 1972 Lori Lieberman original.
    -----
    From Wikipedia:
Lori Lieberman is an American singer. She was born in California and grew up in Switzerland, and signed a deal with Capitol Records in the early 1970s. Her self-titled debut album featured the tune "Killing Me Softly with His Song", said to have been written after seeing Don McLean in concert.
The tune was reworked by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel, and would go on to be a chart-topping single for Roberta Flack a few years later. Lieberman released several albums on Capitol in the 1970s and also provided music for the Schoolhouse Rocks TV show in the late '70s and early '80s. In the 1980s Lieberman receded from the industry and had three children; in the mid-1990s she began recording again for independent labels."
You may visit her official website:

Lori Lieberman has a very lovely voice. She is an artist, who has contributed several beautiful music to the world.
This is THE version that I first heard in Tokyo in February 1973.
Just listening to the intro and the first minute of the song just blew me away!
I also like the Roberta Flack cover but this Lori Lieberman song is THE one that got me first.
This song has also been updated for the current decade of listeners by the Fugees (Lauryn Hill).
    =
To all Lori Lieberman fans and to all who enjoy great music rendition:
    Enjoy!

I really am so sad that people have forgotten that this was the first version of killing me softly. So many have redone this song, but Lori literally wrote it and people forget that. This is my favorite version because it is such a calming and relaxing melody, and when she sings, I feel the passion in each and every word. This will always be my favorite.

The song actually doesn't belong to her cos she didn't compose it. A lot of commenters seem to think that 'cos this version was recorded first that Lori wrote the song herself. The truth is the song was composed by a professional songwriter called Charles Fox along with a lyricist Norman Gimbel... Lori did collaborate by adding some lyrics (something most pop artists do when given a pre-written song) but the romantic idea that this piece of music is purely her heart being spilled in the form of song is a myth. It's a great song but you are giving Lori too much credit for the intellectual property.

I heard this song in my senior year of high school 1972/73. It was a school nite and I had my headphones on at 3:00 a.m. as I had taken some acid earlier in the evening. This came on WNEW-FM in NYC and I just stopped and then poured out my eyes as to how beautiful of a song it was...her voice, the arrangement and of course the strings. I could not stop sobbing (I am sure there was another factor for that). The next day after school I went to my local record store and purchased the LP. It had the same effect on me even afterwards. For whatever reason, this version holds a special place in my heart.

Inspiration for the lyrics to this poem came from Lori being at a Don Mclean(American Pie) concert. She wrote the words on a napkin as she felt Don was singing to her about her life as she was having an affair with Norman Gimbel who she was working with along with Charles Fox who was a music composer. Even though Gimbel & Fox have taken credit for this song the credit goes to Lori. Another case of human males taking advantage of a much younger female not only sexually but musically.

the guitarist was NOT Lori, it was Dennis Budimir. (More uninformed unemployed people with too much time on their hands.) And Lori has never said she wrote this sing in any interview ever. Others say to her "But you wrote this" and she smiles and says "I'm just happy to be a part of a great song". If you look on the back of the album (which I just found on the web) it says "all songs composed by fox/gimbel except "My lover do you know" written and published by Lori Lieberman. For all they knew, in 1971/2 when making the album, Roberta Flack a year later might have discovered that song and turned that into a hit. And Fox/Gimbel would have been happy for her if it did turn out that way.

Didn't Lori have other songs that could also have made her famous? The only reason anyone even mentions her version is that it became so popular with another artist (as happened all the time back then). She could easily have risen to whatever heights she feels were wrested from her with any her other music.

In any case, the music was written by Charles Fox and the lyrics were written by Norman Gimbell in collaboration with Lori who was inspired by a concert by Don McLean.
Fox and Gimbell didn't give Lieberman writing credits so she decided to record it. Because she recorded it Roberta Flack heard it and then recorded it herself. Because Roberta Flack recorded it we all now know it. Like so much great music it's a flow of different artists. Enjoy it all.
