- Silent protagonists let you better immerse yourself in a fictional world, but occasionally a game can't help but sarcastically point out your character's freaky lack of speech. Here are the games you received a subtle bit of in-game sass for being so weirdly quiet the whole time. Seriously, maybe speak up a little?

Personally I think Jane as the HR Director is the scariest thing I can think of. Anyone else remember the scene from Lethal Weapon 2 where the mooks are standing on plastic sheeting? That's an exit interview to be avoided.
Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't Oxbox owned by another company (eurogamer?), so technically isn't their HR team the HR team?
At the beginning of Jak II (where they decided to give the protagonist a voice after spending the whole first game silent):

It shocked me the first time I played Jak 2. Maybe if Link gets tortured he'll speak up too? Well, before Hulking out and turning into Fierce Deity.
My favorite "Chell Is Mute" jokes in Portal actually comes from GLADoS. Not many people mentioned this, so here it is.
"Do you remember the statement I made earlier about garbage standing around, being useless? I was talking about you. You didn't say anything, so I thought the joke had gone over your head. Sorry about that..."
And also at the end of Portal 2 she calls Chell a dangerous mute lunatic, also pointing out the fact that Chell doesn’t talk
in the stanley parable, there is an ending where stanley must speak into a voice activated switch to continue.
only problem is, there is no mic function, and the narrator continues angrily yelling at stanley for not talking.

Nope, it was more of a "Grin and Bear it" excuse: She basically stated that Link choose to be silent so he wouldn't have to express the amount of pain he have to go through as the hero (doesn't explain why he grunts and screams on occasions)
I mean being silent to bottle up one's problems doesn't mean you're not gonna make a peep when a bodybuilding cat centaur gives you a whole new orifice.

There are also quite a few sasses about it in Saints Row 2 and 4. Even your character gets in on it. "I learned that being in charge is better than being a bitch who keeps his mouth shut and does what he's told" anyone?
Or when dex and troy are argueing about a mission and dex asks you to do it and you just go and do it and dex is all "why cant you be more like him?"

I personally imagine that Gordon Freeman took a vow of silence when he first came into work that day and simply hasn't broken it since.
That and maybe he isn't sure how to react to a pretty girl talking to him in anything other than a professional or mocking tone.
Well at the start of Half Life he was running late to work.In the rest of the game he never really needed to talk.And in Half Life 2 he was probably just in a pretty big shock and just didn't want to talk anymore.
That and perhaps he isn't used to a pretty girl taking notice of him. Sure he is a fit badass as well as a science nerd but still.
Maybe the accident at the very beginning of HL1 rendered him mute?

Breath of the Wild does it's bit to help us with Link in 2 ways; 1- by making it fairly clear that he DOES speak, albeit very rarely, and we just never hear him do it. And 2- by explaining the reason for why he's almost always silent in the first place. A line from the diary of the Princess states that she did ask him why he's always quiet, to which he did reply, and so she writes "With so much at stake, and so many eyes on him, he feels it necessary to stay strong and to silently bear any burden"

The writing/humor on both of these shows is severely underrated.
Saint's Row 4, numerous characters comment about how you were silent as the playa, otherwise known as the entire first game in the series.

One thing about gta v online I've always liked is their ability to mock your character's silence. Back when I played it a lot, I used to count all the pokes - got up to about 15 or so before I lost count. Bloody funny when you just catch the odd "If they were offended, they would've said something."
The thing is that Chell has a perfectly good reason to stay quiet- she keeps her mouth shut because SHE DOESN'T WANT TO GIVE GLADOS THE SATISFACTION OF HEARING HER VOICE. Learning that made her easily my favorite silent protagonist ever.
Link's silence was meant to honor the VA for ocarina of time, who died during production, so they only used his hyahs. I think.
That's kind of them to honor him like that.
...What? Link has only ever spoken two sentences: "I found a mirror under the table!" in Adventure of Link, and "Come on!" in Wind Waker. He's a silent protagonist because he's meant to be the "Link" between the player and the game world, that's why they named him that way! It has nothing to do with his voice actor in OoT dying. His VA in OoT didn't even die, he returned to voice Link in Smash Bros, Smash Bros Melee, and Soul Calibur II! He's even still doing work, he plays Hala in the Pokemon Sun and Moon anime! And if you're talking about Young Link's VA, she's still active, too! She got married in 2014, kinda hard to do that when you're dead!

Yep. Lab Rat I think it's called, follows Doug Rattmann, the guy who leaves those messages and mosaics around in the secret rooms. You can find it in the Extras section of the Portal 2 main menu or just look it up.

Nick M-S Yeah but when the developer changed from Bungie to 343 Industries in Halo 4&5 Chief has started talking even during the gameplay.
I didn't realise anyone played 4 or 5 (obvious sarcasm don't jump down my throat) I've never played them myself (after halo reach the franchise just felt stale and repetitive in my eyes).
I know it was a fully voiced game, but I still love that insider joke in Saints Row IV at the beginning of Ben King's simulation where the protagonist jokes that back in Stillwater (from Saints Row 1) he was too scared to talk back then (since the first two games didn't have any of the million options for a voiced protagonist) and Kinzie says "That must have been nice." XD An example of the protagonist/writers sassing themselves.

The player character is brought before some other characters and someone says, "He doesn't speak. He thinks he's hot shit or something."
In call of duty games the protagonists canonically do speak, the player simply doesn't hear it.

Actually, in Call of Duty 3, Isabelle at one point quips, "A man of few words...I like that"
Minchken But the "How are you today?" responded with silence actually makes sense. I don't think the player replies I just think the NPC took the silence as an answer of "I feel like sh*t today"

Destiny 2's original campaign had this. I think my favorite one came from Cayde-6, where he's trapped in a precarious situation after trying to steal some enemy tech. He's trying to instruct the player on how to get him out, but when he tries to get a response the player character just stares at him, much to his chagrin.
Link has a voice, and talks in conversations, just not in cutscenes. The cutscenes, they always get me.

I know I'm... several years late to this conversation, but one silent protagonist nod I get a kick out of is the Warrior of Light in Final Fantasy 14, where the player character's lack of spoken lines becomes something of a running gag. And even when dialogue options do start showing up in the expansions, there's at least one where a "dialogue" choice is "Nod Decisively"
If i was in the same group with Nathan Fillion, I would never talk, only listen his majestic voice.

One of my old teachers walked in class a few days ago, we had a relatively short(3 sentences) conversation about how my up-session(spell?) with making dragons was coming along, everyone looked at me like I was someone else, and they had to make sure that there was a dragon on my desk, and one almost completed in my hands, to know it was the same guy they've gotten their own dragons from.
2:11 Okay, so I'm terrified of heights. I went on one of those rides that takes you up high then drops you and also a swing type ride that spins you at the same time. On both of them, I had to force myself to make a sound and even then it was more akin to a short yelp than anything else.
A follow up to this topic would be cool. 7 characters you play as who talk that you wish did not. For me number 1 would be spyro from the original trilogy. I hate his nasally sounding voice.

Oh just remembered a good one. Before forsaken was added to destiny 2 your character was always interrupted by ghost before they could say anything which is best seen when cayde-6 relates to you about how to get him out of a vex teleportation loop and asks you to say anything to signify that you understood.
