Golden Eagle Chases Bald Eagle in Dutchess County, New York

  • I was able to capture this Golden Eagle chasing an adult Bald Eagle in Dutchess County, NY. I was there filming my documentary "Urban Eagle" and heard talk of Golden Eagles in the area. I have shot thousands of clips of Bald Eagles and this is the first time I have seen a Golden Eagle. They are fairly rare on the east coast and hard to find in New York State and are only seen during winter migrations.

      Is that the difference between Golden eagle and a juvenile Bald eagle? I have a hard time making the distinction?

    • @wilderness_bound
      @wilderness_bound 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gregorywillis8400 the bill on the golden is smaller than the bald. I researched differences online till I was confident in Identification. Balds are fisherman, Goldens hunt small game. So if you see the bird sitting along the river it is likely the Bald. Both are opportunistic and will feed on carrion. There are tell tale markings in flight. Good luck in your studies.

    • @PaulRentz

      @gregorywillis8400 that is one distinction. A juvenile golden has single white patch under each wing, not blotchy like juvenile bald eagles.

    Hey Mark, nice "Catch!" I'm originally from Wappingers Falls, grew up there, never saw any baldies during that time. They started nesting around Wappingers in the early 2000s - There are currently about 3 nests along the Hudson river, as well as in Beacon, Fishkill, and Poughkeepsie. In which town did you happen to see the Baldie and Golden? It looks like somewhere in Northern Dutchess...
    (By the way, the eagle action on Onondaga lake in Syracuse is a little slow this year (not enough ice for them to congregate - I've seen about 5-6 (far below the 110 that were spotted last year), take care!

    I grew up in Yemen where Golden eagles dominate the skies. I even nurtutred in injured Golden n released it back to the wild. Based on my experience growing up in Golden terortory, Golden eagle was most likely letting the bald eagle know that it was flying in its area. There is no natural beef between these two eagles, they are cousins. If the golden eagle eagle entered the bald eagles area, it would be run out. No beef like some of you are saying. They are animals n they follow the laws of natures unlike some humans.

      Hey Les, thank you for the feedback. However Bald eagle parents don't fly together with their offspring in winter.They kick them out of their nesting territory shortly after their first flights and then they are on their own and I don't believe this was a peaceful interaction. Although that would be nice if that were the case.
      Also if you look closely in the video you can see the golden has a smaller head, gold nape on the back of the head, and tan colorish feathers that go all the way down to the feet. All characteristics of the Golden Eagle, not the Bald Eagle. Immature bald eagles also have white in their chest and this Golden does not. I sent this video to former NY state DEC member who also verified it was a Golden Eagle.

You are correct, Northern eagles are not nesting atm, so good point on the parent/offspring flying together this late from last season. Whoever it is, this is a very nice video of the eagles. They seemed to be soaring peacefully to me, soaring around even with the other eagle looking away after the contact like they were just enjoying some faux warfare. Pretty cool to watch. I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but that is not a golden eagle. It is an immature bald eagle, and the adult bird is very likely one of its parents. Young bald eagles will not infrequently stay close to their parents for a while after leaving the nest. I lived and worked in the backcountry of the Rocky Mountain west for a number of years, and can easily tell the difference between these two eagle species, adult or immature, a mile away.

    • @mikelemeryfilms
      @mikelemeryfilms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's incorrect. This was during winter at a pheasant farm with over 15 migrating bald eagles. Most immature. There is no nest in this exact area, so it's highly unlikely that is is a parent and it's offspring. This is also a known golden eagle wintering spot. They have been spotted in the same location for years. I have gotten footage of golden eagles on the same spot the last few years. Multiple other birders also spotted the golden eagle the same day. That's how I knew to look for it. I would also suggest watching in 4K on big screen and too will notice: the golden eagle has feathers all the way down to its feet, bald eagles don't. It has smaller head and beak than the bald eagle. It has a golden nape on the back of its head. Immature bald eagles don't have that. Immature bald eagles have white on their chest and wings.

      @@mikelemeryfilms Okay. I just rewatced this video on my 4K HDR OLED TV instead of my new phone, and I stand corrected: it is indeed a golden eagle. I wouldn't call this a chase, however. It was more like a small disagreement. It's rare to see eagles squabble, unless it's over food in a particularly harsh winter. Even then, it's not the fight to the death which some envision it to be. Kudos however on an excellent video featuring two such magnificent raptors.
