I just want to tell you guys who happen to read this comment that Dream of the Red Chamber(红楼梦) deserves its dignity and respect far more than the reality show. The information implicated , or explicated in this novel is way beyond the reach of all time(sorry to say this) , information that is philosophical or experiential, forward or traditional, and it won’t die down so long as there are Honglouholics(people who adore and are readily learn from this book). In addition, this book’s literary value is immense, it is atop nearly all the other contemporaneous books, and crowns it’s position in Chinese classical novels. There are so much more to talk about, but I should stop here, for I myself still learn from this novel.( The other novels are worthwhile to read as well.)
He was clearly just joking for a younger audience. There is a lot of drama in the novel. But otherwise I agree! I’ve only read it in translation sadly but I’m obsessed with it. There are so many levels and themes, both the human and the divine. It’s so hard to get good information in English about the novel. I wish it were more well known and popular in the west.
@@lizmerrick6883 I don’t know which translation you’ve read, but many Chinese teachers, including mine, suggest that the English translated version by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang overshadows the others. Perhaps you can give a shot. Or, have you watched the adapted TV-series first aired in 1987? It is publicly accepted here in China as the most loyal adaptation to the original novel.

The most confusing thing for me is the role of the servants in the household who can be bought and sold but are not treated like slaves. Also if the women had bound feet because they are a Han Chinese family during the Manchu era. I know Han women still bound their feet but Manchu women were not allowed to. I think Cao purposely never mentioned it. He talks about female beauty a lot but never mentions feet which were very important to Classical Chinese beauty. The maids are considered beautiful but they could not have bound feet as they had to run around and do errands.
Journey to the West isn't just some kind of wuxia crap novel. It is about alchemy of the human body and soul, and is really wonderfully written from the beginning to the end. It has a very non-spoiling adaptation that anyone can watch before reading the book: "Xi You" by Ming-Liang Tsai (2014). Or a classic opera from Qing dynasty- it is definitely the most acrobatic one and no one sings there.
As a Chinese and having read all of these novels, I’d like to say Dream of the Red Mansions is definitely the greatest and most brilliant one of them all! ❤

I saw the movie ' journey to the west' it was breath-taking, later i read the novels it is my best, the most intriguing story, rest three were just ok.

Chinese culture is built upon many traditions, peppered with proverbs and religions, and values art and literature and poetry a lot (it came back stronger after the re-education)

a lot of Japanese stuff is based off of old Chinese stuff. Like Gokus name in DBZ in Chinese is Sun Wu Kong the monkey kings name and on the back of one of his outfits it says Wu Kong. And if you know Chinese you'll notice that Shenron sounds like Shen Long 神龙 or god dragon

Water Margin was popular in Japan but Japanese authors want to change some parts of the Chinese novel to be more appealing, hence there are many novels that have the word "Suikoden", which those Japanese authora use Water Margin's structure as a template.

Dream of the Red Chamber is a great novel, and it is an exaggeration to say that the Chinese would rather lose all other novels than keep Dream of the Red Chamber. Another claim was made by Mao Zedong, who said that the Chinese deserved to make a greater contribution to the world, and that we couldn't just give the world a Dream of Red Mansions. (He even ordered that all generals must read this love tragedy over and over again!) Of course this book is very difficult to understand, I only gradually understood it after I was 40 years old.
Not being as old as me, you'll not remember in the late 1970's the BBC had an imported serial called "The Water Margin" which seems like it might have been based on the classic work. Can't remember a lot about it other than it was set in a marshy area (was it Liang Shang Po?) where a load of Outlaws used to hide out. Does anybody else remember this?

David Hawkes has an excellent translation of Honglou Meng. But it’s five volumes (making it five times the length of a typical western novel) so you have to have time. And you’ll never really understand the poetry portions without speaking Chinese ( perhaps there’s an audio version somewhere?) I have also read a good abridged version.
i havent read all of water margin or journey to the west but i read rotk over ten times and i get a war boner every single time i reread it. I am definitely going to finish those other two and read the red chamber as well. my original plan two years ago was to finish all four classics in one year but i fell in love with only rotk too much lol.

It actually talked about the downfall of Ming dynasty. Almost every single character in that book had a symbolic meaning, either represented a real person in the history or a certain group of scholars. Only those who know chinese literature extremely well, and very knowledgeable about the history events between late Ming dynasty and early Qing dynasty, are able to capture the underlying meaning of this so called domestic soap opera. Moreover, every single poem or even date in that book, was conveying something else than the superficial meaning. But in general, most people do not accept this type of explanation, they rather belive this book was about the author's own family stories. For example, the plot about the mirror, the guy looked the mirror from one side he saw that beautiful lady, looked from the other side he saw skeleton. The name of that mirror is"风月宝鉴", which is "wind moon mirror" if translated word by word. Wind and moon can either be interpreted as romance (according to the conventional meaning in chinese literature) or Ming and Qing dynasties (Ming and Qing these two characters were used to be replaced by wind and moon at that time by ancient chinese citizens due to political reason). As for the mirror, it was conventionally used to symbolize "history" in classic chinese literature, we have an ancient saying 'A polished bronze mirror helps you see yourself dress up right, and history as a mirror helps you see behind one's rise and fall'. So by knowing this, you can either interpret that plot as someone focus on the beauty of lady and lost his life because of his own lust, or as readers read this book, we all focus on the romantic thing without knowing that it ia about the real history during the time when so many han chinese were massacred by Qing government. Wind Moon Mirror is actually an alternate name of this book. This whole book is made up all puzzles like the plot I described above, countless puzzles, readers really have to dig into to fully appreciate Red Chamber Dream.

@@miguelbranquinho7235 at the beginning of the story, there was a Buddhist monk and a Taoist priest. does Buddhism and Taoism emphasize nothingness exactly the same way? Are these two religions and philosophies the same, or how do they differ?
@@seanleechild I'm not that clear on the subject but I do know they differ. Budhism seems to want to escape the endless cycle of reincarnation by achieving enlightnment while Taoism (at least Taoist characters in these books) want to achieve immortality. Someone else might better explain the specificities, I'm just starting out getting into this stuff.

Compared to the other 3 Chinese classics (3 kingdoms, water margin and Journey to the West), Dream of Red Chambers is SO BORING! It's like a long domestic soap opera! Why is it even a Chinese classic? What is so special about this piece of literature?

@@miguelbranquinho7235 at the beginning of the story, there was a Buddhist monk and a Taoist priest. does Buddhism and Taoism emphasize nothingness exactly the same way? Are these two religions and philosophies the same, or how do they differ?
@@seanleechild I'm not that clear on the subject but I do know they differ. Budhism seems to want to escape the endless cycle of reincarnation by achieving enlightnment while Taoism (at least Taoist characters in these books) want to achieve immortality. Someone else might better explain the specificities, I'm just starting out getting into this stuff.
