    All commentators here should consider that this motion picture was produced for a young male Japanese audience. Call it propaganda or that ever you like.

      Not true. Once the allies learned not to dogfight the Zero, the P-40 and the Wildcat held their own quite well. In fact it was these two planes that gutted Japans Naval and Army air forces of their experienced pilots. The Hellcats, Corsairs, Lightning and Thunderbolts just mopped up the rookies. Very few of the pre war trained air cadre was still alive.

      You are right but the kill rate greatly increased when the Hellcats and Corsairs came on the scene. Chennault figured out that a P40 should never try to turn with a Zero.The Japanese lost most of their experienced pilots at the Battle of Midway.

      Coming back to the airfield, getting a 'turnaround' service and leaving on another sortie without stopping the engine was routine even when I served in the RAF. Weapons, fuel, some basic checks, all done in a minute or two, if called for before the plane arrived.

    I had seen parts of this movie years ago. Think it’s a Japanese propaganda film near the wars end as the scene around 4:45 showing the ground crewmen reloading the A6M’s cockpit cannons is very rare and the allies destroyed all existing aircraft after the war or 99.9% of them and this one is running. Unless it’s a very well made stage prop. Great to watch and would love to see the entire movie. Thanks for posting.

      Actors were in a protected profession. Some volunteered anyway, of course.
      There are photos of the actor Toshiro Mifune in full Japanese pilot's outfit, standing with what appears to be a real WWII Japanese fighter. If he was in a movie made during the war, I have never seen it.
      Have seen a Kurosawa film with Tasuya Nakadai in it; 'The Men Who Twist The Monkey's Tail', which was made during WWII, so this is possible, timing-wise.

      Navy and Army had land bases. It depended on which service had been given the job of attacking which island.
      Both fought against the US during their bomber offensive.
      This movie has been called the fighting over New Britain, a set of islands in the South-West Pacific, but is probably Okinawa, judging by the heat, palm trees and presence of Japanese actors.

      1944 Japanese film probably wouldn't go to the expense and risk of real parachuting. I mean, much of the air battle is stock footage, or models. - and that airfield cost very little to set up: tents, an a tower made of local wood.

      These are late-model Mitsubishi A6Ms, probably A6M5s.
      This was known in Japan as the 'Zero-sentoki' or year / type zero fighter, due to it's manufacture in the first year of the new calendar ( see earlier planes called type 97, etc. ).
      A6M is A= fighter,
      6 = 6th fighter accepted by the Navy,
      M = Mitsubishi.
      The -5 suffix is the equivalent of mark / model 5 of this design.
      It's official reporting name was 'Zeke', with the A6M3 version being called 'Hamp', but most called it the 'Zero'.

    • @victorboucher675
      @victorboucher675 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kevinduffy80 You seem to not understand that the "escort" carriers where too small to operate both the Corsair and the Hellcat. Reading a book on the USMC Air Operations, written during and after the war by the guys that where there, aircraft of differing types were used together on missions at the altitude they were designed for. So (these were the actual mission reports) the P40s flew low, F4F low middle, F6F, F4U high middle, P38 top cover. Aircraft engines must compress the thinner air with superchargers and have designed operational altitude where that type performs best. The wing airfoil profile is also designed for specific air density as well as the control surfaces. In simple terms, one size can't fit everything. And every aircraft has a best altitude of operation. A sports car or jeep is not "outclassed" by each other, they drive on different surfaces.

    • @stevetheduck1425
      @stevetheduck1425 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's a belief in Japan, sometimes seen in anime and movie, that the atom bomb had a parachute attached.
      It's because they saw an equipment package that sensed and radioed back measurements of the bomb's performance, dropped by another B-29.
      People near the actual bomb did not report the bomb had no parachute, due to being dead or concerned with other matters.
      The earlier weather flight flew over the targets ( Kokura and others ), then the target selection was made by the commanders of the B-29s involved.
      Sometimes there were other B-29s in the target area, observer - camera planes, but the small numbers did not activate the Japanese' warning system.
      Survivors reported the alarms sounded, then the all clear was given, then the bomb exploded, with some people actually seeing the B-29 or even the bomb falling ( see, parachute above ).

      Actually it was the pilot that made the Zero or the F4F superior. Each plane had their strength and weaknesses, and if the pilot played to the other's strengths, they were likely to lose. If an American pilot, either in a P-40 or an F4F tried to fight a "Zero" using Turn and Burn, they were likely setting themselves up to lose. If they tried to fight using Zoom and Boom tactics, they were setting them selves up to either win, or at least make it back to base.
