EASY HOODED CLOAK TUTORIAL

  • I was trying to find a tutorial online to make a really quick and simple cloak, but could not find one that was quite right so I decided to make one myself! I made this cloak for about 6 dollars for my LARP this weekend to keep warm. However, cloaks can also be used for any costumes, cosplays, Walmart visits- you name it!
    Towards the end of the video I touch on tips for making the cloak without a cape to use for reference and also simply clarify the absolute basics of making a cloak.
    Also, this was my first tutorial ever and I hit a couple technical difficulties as well, so I will definitely work on improving the quality of my tutorials in the future. I hope this video was able to help!
    Thanks a ton for watching!

    Do you have any issues with the front riding up to your neck so that it kind of chokes you? That tends to happen when I make capes and I'm trying to figure out how to avoid it. It could be because I've used really thin fabric but I would love to know your thoughts

    • @ayecarlie
      @ayecarlie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't tend to have too many issues with it choking me, unless of course I'm running with it on or something, then it will slide back and be a bit uncomfortable. I think because mine is a little more snug on the shoulders it sort of holds on and stays put a bit better. Something I would consider trying is perhaps getting a metal closure on your cloak. This could help add a little weight pulling it down away from your neck. I've noticed the lighter the closure, the more it moves around. For example, those little fabric ties cheap capes have are the absolute worst. If all else fails- maybe either get a cloak pin and a blanket or try safety pinning your cloak in place so that it doesn't fall back. Hope this helps!

    Any suggestions for those of us that do not have a sewing machine?

    • @ayecarlie
      @ayecarlie  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Deborah Stein I also did not have a sewing machine for this project so it is quite do-able! Personally, I just went for a fabric that didn’t fray so that I didn’t have to go and hem all of those edges by hand because that would take me days to complete. I just did what I’m pretty sure is called a running stitch to speed up the process and it wasn’t so bad! I was able to knock this out in just a couple of hours.

    Anyone have recommendations on the best place to get medieval clothing (1150-1335AD) for men (English), women (Iberian) and children that also doesn't look out of place in the modern world?
    I was thinking that footwear like the following could suit (whilst not necessarily being perfect)
    Men: Sandals, Espadrilles, Ropes Sandals, Empire Sandals, Leather Thongs, Menorcan Sandals, Gladiator Sandals, Clogs, Monk Strap, Moccasins, Woven Sandals, Suede Loafer, Chukka Boots, Chelsea boots, Plimsolls, Cuban Heel Chelsea Boots, Chukka Desert Boot, Driving Shoes,
    Women: Strappy Tie-up Sandals, Knotted Suede Toe Post Sandal, Cross Strap flat sandals, Raffia double strap slide sandals, woven leather tie leg sandal, Mules, Clogs, Over the Knee Boots, Ballet Flats, Lace Up Knee High Boots, Stirrup Boots, Slouch Boot, Desert Lace Up Shoes, Cuban heel western Chelsea boot with buckle detail.
    Likewise, Quilted Clothing (like Quilted Sweatshirt, Quilted Puffer Coat, Quilted Coat, Quilted Tracksuit Pants, Quilted Tracksuit Top, Quilted Jumper) could suffice for Civilian Gambeson.
    I’m also thinking that Tunics (Knee, Cocktail, Midi or Maxi Length), Leggings, Tights, Long Sleeved V Neck Shirt, Tank Top, Henley Shirt, Track Pants, Hoodie, T-Shirt with Notch Neck, Driving Gloves, Suede Gloves, Leather Gloves could be used.
    Correct me if I’m wrong.

    What fabric did you make it with the gray one what was the gray fabric?

    • @ayecarlie
      @ayecarlie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was a blanket from walmart that I made into a cloak. I’m not sure what fabric it was made of exactly. It was not quite fleece, but maybe something similar?
      I’d recommend anything you find cozy. If you’re going to be outside with it, stay away from anything too fuzzy as that will not be very durable, and will be extremely heavy in the rain.

    How would I go about making a longer tail on my hood?

    • @ayecarlie
      @ayecarlie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe try cutting it to be more of a triangle rather than a square as I did. This way it would be more shallow of a hood, but come down longer in the back. Hope this helps!

    I am going to be making a cape of a character named Tamaki Amajiki do you know a way I could add the lining of gold in its shape?

    • @EvlNabiki
      @EvlNabiki 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, this is a bit late so I'm not sure how helpful this will be, but I wanted to do a really similar thing, so what I did was basically make two capes, one with thicker fabric (some polyester wool), and one with thinner (some thin cotton) and sew the thin one good side out to the thick one. It's not perfect but it worked in a pinch!

    What's the material needed?

    • @ayecarlie
      @ayecarlie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just used a blanket from walmart, a closure, and a needle and thread. You could make it from any blanket or maybe grab a couple yards of a fleece, wool, or other heavy fabric. You could really use anything you'd like to!
