  • Just a quick walk around my exotic/tropical garden here in Abingdon. It’s been a tough year for the garden due to the “Beast from the East” and the hot summer. August 27th 2018
    (Apologies for the jittery video. I have no idea why it did that.)

    This is very impressive. I love how you’ve managed to fill all the various levels with plants but in a way that no one plant overwhelms the others. They all get to fill their space and present themselves at their best. I like the fact that you can see very little bare soil and I love how a lot of the plants set each other off by contrasting in form, colour or texture!
    Altogether a big whopping 10 out of 10 for how to create an exotic garden. You’ve pretty much got it down to perfection as far as I’m concerned. I’m sure another video with commentary showing the names of the plants would go down very well I think!

    • @Springyfeller

      Improve Sheffield Thank you so much for your comments, they are really appreciated! This video was taken after my open day that year so had been primped and pruned thoroughly. Plants never grow how you expect them to. Each year the Dahlias can grow to a different height even though they are left in the ground over winter so it makes planning for planting schemes difficult. Dahlia ‘David Howard’ says that it will grow to about a metre tall but here it can grow to two metres!👍
      Before the open day each plant will fight for its space and then I just prune it to fit in around the plants that surround it.

    That's one of the most impressive tropical gardens I've ever seen. Maybe because it had an English country garden style. No, I'm not mad, the garden showed clusters of same type plants, with winding paths sided by tropical plants smartly well placed.
    Who could tell, the most astonishing tropical garden was made by an Englishman!

    Oh my goodness, this is by far the most stunning garden I’ve ever seen! I absolutely love it! I’m trying to create a tropical area in my garden but being in Scotland plants flourish less in my climate. It’d be great to get some ideas of what would do well. I have fatsia, phormium, acers, huechera, lilies, cordyline all ready to go in. What else might I try? 😊

      Caroline Middleditch Thank you so much Caroline. What part of Scotland and what is your soil like? Clay? Sandy? Etc. If you are prepared to do a little bit of work protecting things it will go a long way to what you can grow.

    Hi Steve, thanks for your reply. Normally no one answers my comments, but you did. Thanks mate.
    Can you tell me the name of the shrub, just passed and next to your straw roofed hut. It has long leaves of about 4 to 5 inches long with jagged edges. At first I thought the leaves were part of a trex leaf. But they were all individual leaves. There are loads of plants in you garden that I have not seen before, but that one screamed out “buy me”. I’m really looking forward to the next video you make just to know the names of some of your plants. Thank you Steve.

    • @Springyfeller
      @Springyfeller  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No problem eddy. I always try to reply when I can. I could chat about my garden for hours. I normally only get to do that on my open day once a year!
      The plant that I think you mean is Schefflera delavayi. Those leaves are more like 6-8 inches or more in length. It’s one of my favourite plants in the garden. It also shouted ‘buy me” when I saw it........ three times in fact!!😁

      Thank you Carole for your kind comments! Lots of different things going on in the garden that when put all together, make the garden what it is. Right plant, right place - layering of plants - lots of things really. Adam Frost did a descriptive walk through of the garden on Gardeners World in September 2017, describing the planting as resembling and English woodland but with tropical style plants.

      Hi, yes I first saw your garden on Gardeners World, and was blown away. I couldn't believe that you could make a garden look so big just by the way you arrange the planting beds. It inspires me to attempt to create my own exotic garden since we moved house recently. My collection of hardy exotics are currently waiting patiently in the greenhouse until I decide on the design. Thanks again Steve for answering my questions about your plants. Seeing them in the right settings highlights their qualities. They make the garden more tropical and at the same time enhancing the larger architectural plants. There is one more plant I need to know of if I’m going to aquire one for my ‘patch’ and that’s the one at the bottom of the frame 0:25. It looks like a mini trex. You also have it a bit further up the garden. Thanks Steve in advance for sharing your knowlege with us.

    Gorgeous... and amazing how you've gotten so many tropical and subtropicals to grow in your area! I'm living in Mexico now and trying to get close to this in my arid tho temperate climate (75d avg) and so wish I had one of those wonderful UK nurseries near me... sigh.

    Fantastic stuff your garden has been a huge inspiration for me since i first saw it on HTUK so glad you did a video this year was great on gardeners world last year but too short! would love to see more through the seasons mate like overwintering and that. superb.

      Thank you! It’s a shame that 4 years of my blog on HTUK has been lost.
      I will certainly try and do videos each season as a lot of people think that there is no interest in the winter months. Yes there is less foliage but it’s a great time to see the architectural palms!

    As a fellow tropical plant enthusiast im very impressed and if im honest rather envious. My garden is tiny by comparison to yours just 35ft x 18ft with another small area near my gate. On saying that im in the process of making my front garden a tropical treat. Im a bit of a palm nut, collecting upwards of 50 assorted palms . A fair few of them are trachycarpus spices. Your garden is so inspirational. A true benchmark for others including myself to emulate.

    Thank you for your reply,my palms and T rex are only a couple of feet high so I am a beginner wrapping everything overwinter nearly lost my banana plant,hoping to create a canopy it could take years,but your garden gives me hope and inspiration .

      Well it’s a start Carole. You’ll be surprised just how quick they grow once they get their roots established. I’m not sure if you have seen this or not but it’s a link to my old blog on a website I used to use a lot when I started out. It shows the garden in its early days. Most of the plants were annuals then until they were replaced with something more permanent. Here is the link👍 www.hardytropicals.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=135&t=15027

    Very impressive. A plant lovers heaven. I like the placement and repetition of the dahlias. It gives a sense of cohesion amongst the great variety of species. Also it can be difficult in designing to make dahlias combine well structurally with other plants. You seem to have mastered that art! ~ I hope your winter is somewhat milder this year.

    • @Springyfeller
      @Springyfeller  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your comments and observations! As you say, you need some repetition with the planting, wether it is with the flowers or foliage. I try to do it with both. The Dahlia ‘Honka surprise’ is planted throughout the garden and is VERY popular with visitors on our open days. I always seek out unusual plants. It keeps me excited about my hobby and visitors are amazed at just what I can grow here! 🌴

    Stumbled across this. It’s amazing. Love your choice of flowers, as they all look tropical and exotic but are in fact well known garden plants given a whole new lease of life.

    • @Springyfeller
      @Springyfeller  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Steve! Yes a lot of the flowers are various Dahlias. These have been planted in the garden for 10 years as they were used to fill the garden easily and cheaply. Visitors to the garden love them so I keep them in. I love them too of course as they show where the garden originally started.

      Thank you Susie. I’m a bit of a plantaholic so have many plants in the garden. I do have a back bone of permanent planting and then each year I add the tender plants that are overwintered in the outhouse and also any new acquisitions.
