    This summer I got myself 3 guitars for like $100. It was a bright red Squire strat, an Epiphone Les Paul and a Fender precision bass. The bass is from 1998 and it’s become one of my favorite instruments in my collection.

    Here's another interesting tip off (for me anyway)...I have carpal tunnel - so for YEARS i bought the thinnest jazz nut and neck basses I could find - but the carpal tunnel never really got under control - THEN one day, I played a P bass custom shop with the 1.75" nut - and after a few min - i realized...my CT wasn't flaring up! ...sold everything that was 1.5" and have fallen for the Oval C nut at 1.75". Dr said it's likely due to less 'squeezing' distance with the chunky nut. Winning

      Yes! 💯 That’s a real thing!! At NAMM this year, I had a great convo with Devon Smullen (owner/master builder at Devon Bass) about my love for thicker bass necks. He confirmed that they indeed let your hand relax a bit more than thinner ones. Happy you found the bass that feels best for your hands. 😄

      Market seems to be pushing the jazz necks regardless of the type of basses though.

      Plus it's like they just have a much stronger presence... a jazz can disappear in a mix and that's not needed in a lot of music. A strong, up front bass line is. That's the Precision's game.

      If I had to redo it, I'd start with a P bass too. I have a jazz. I'm getting one now after 3 years and seeing myself often borrowing a P to play with my band.
      Learning how to use an amp is very important too. It's amazes me how 90% of youtube reviews will say close to nothing about what gear and settings they're using.

      Simplicity is everything, especially when gigging. The more you can strip down your setup to basics, the better. That also significantly influences why I personally play a precision bass. When you're in a punk band that does its own stagecrew work, the more you can simplify setup and playing the better.

    • @calilil
      @calilil  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish it was my 1st bass, too! However, I recognize that it was probably better that I spent my 1st year learning on a short scale. That said, I agree. The P bass is very “organic” & pure and very much worth its extra heft compared to basses with slimmer necks & bodies.

    • @tjzambonischwartz
      @tjzambonischwartz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't find it unforgiving at all. I find it comfortable as heck and so much easier to find the notes I want to play because my hand just naturally falls there. I learned on a much slimmer J and and as soon as I picked up a Precision it was like a revelation and suddenly I was able to play so much more cleanly than I ever had. If anything it was the most forgiving bass I'd ever played because it was harder for me to hit sour notes. Everything just flowed.

    Five string PBass coils split so BEA get the bass coil and DG get the treble, with a Jazz pickup in the bridge. Deep blue, black pickguard, black hardware. Undecided on whether I would want a volume knob for each pickup or have a single volume knob and a Telecaster-style switch. Only really out-there mod I'd make is a 24-fret neck. Give me that and I think I'd be set for life. Well that and a Rickenbacker. And an NS Designs Upright Bass. And a Chapman stick. And...

      Haha the hunt never really ends 😂🤘 but wow yes, the 5 string PJ you’re describing sounds WONDERFUL. My 2 cents on the knob dilemma would be to make it a volume knob for each pickup. Would provide a bit more versatility. However, selector switches also do wonders in keeping things quick and easy. I love the switch that’s on my Mustang PJ. 😁

As I grew up being a metalhead, I noticed that most of my fav songs had a bright, punchy instrument playing on the background, although I couldn't really identify what it was (at the time I barely knew anything related to music). I am jus learning bass. My new Aerodyne is being sent back because the fret ends are uncomfortably sharp. I compared that to my friends Fernandez which had lovely smooth fret ends. I have a Guild bass and the frets are good. I am now holding 6 Fender guitars including this new bass. All have sharp undressed fret ends from the factory, which tells me, Fender doesn't do good necks. I have the evidence. I am returning 3 brand new Fender Aerodynes because the necks were never completed.

      So sorry to hear!! If you order from Sweetwater, they will inspect it before it ships out the door to ensure it doesn't come to you with any issues like that. You can also pick the specific stock model you want (by serial number & weight) through their Guitar Gallery feature. This could help you get the best Aerodyne of the bunch. If you want to learn more, they happen to be my affiliate & I have a link to them on my site: www.calilil.com/

      @@calilil Sweetwater was the supplier. All 3 55 point inspections. I think Sweetwater gets so many bad guitars they have to ship them anyway. It isn't a true QC inspection. Quality is for the manufacture to supply. Fender Japan and Fender Mexico has poor or no QC on the necks. They ship guitars with fret sprout and then go on to explain, it is your problem on their website. They make it out to be a normal problem. My other guitars disagree. Sweetwater does take the incomplete guitars back. They offered to ship more guitars, but I don't wish to do more Fender QC. I am rather turned off with Fender and don't wish to perform promoting Fender, so I am looking at other brands. I am not a brand person. Thank you for offering information. I do appreciate your time and efforts. Keep making beautiful music.

    I kind of prefer PJs. It gives you a lot more tonal variations. And let me just say one thing though. I don't care for jazz basses though. But I do like that single coil pickup at the bridge. Dial the single coil down and you have a pure P bass sound. And a PJ is not a jazz bass. It's a Precision bass mostly with a little extra ummpph.
    I went from guitar toning the neck pickup/pickups down to bass and specifically PJ rolling the volume down on the bridge. And the neck up. But if my only choices were a P bass or J bass then defintely a P bass.

    I personally love thin bass sounds, so when I got my first bass (which was a p bass) I was confused on why it wouldn't sound like i wanted it to. I changed the strings, boosted the treble, cut the mids, but nothing seemed to work. I did some research and found out that p basses are not built to make that kind of sound. So I got a bass with soap bars and never went back.

    • @calilil
      @calilil  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ah!! I see. Yeah, if you were trying to get a little brighter sound out of a P, I’d recommend it having a maple fretboard and a PJ pickup configuration instead of just the P (and also being sure to play it near the bridge). Basses with soap bars are a ton of fun too, though! All about finding your sound. 😄

    @Gilbert_Dice_Gottfried 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Jazz of course is the better bass. What I like about the p bass is definitely that one of a kind clunky sound it has. Fenders always have that distinct sound where you can really hear the strings clearly. Almost like an acoustic guitar. Even fender amps have that distinct sound and can really accentuate that unique clean tone. P basses sound more recognizable than a jazz bass and that’s probably why the jazz bass is more versatile.

    • @calilil
      @calilil  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for sharing this perspective- you bring up an interesting point because the Jazz was technically released by Fender as an “improvement” on the P bass design. And yeah, by having more electronics, it can technically do more. As for versatility, I do agree that the P bass tone is more recognizable, yet it somehow “fits” into the various situations it can be in. Definitely a different kind of versatility than how you mentioned that a Jazz bass kind of morphs. Ironically, the one thing that’s hard to do with a Jazz bass is to completely sound like a P bass 😂😂
