I'm a bad student, I hardly ever open my course book, especially when it came to languages. But I listened French radio programs even though the level was way, way beyond me and I was lucky to understand ten words of the whole 15 minute podcast. Naturally, I didn't do well in reading comprehension and my written test was even worse, but despite of being in the bottom of my class my listening comprehension was the best one.
When I was in university I had a 7-hour drive home on the weekends, so I kept myself awake by listening to a Khmer letter sounds and the short conversations from a book for beginners, only checking up the meaning of a word occasionally. When I actually had to communicate, the locals were surprised how clear my pronunciation was. Except there is a one, quite important word I cannot manage to say for love or money.
Now I'm learning the basics of Spanish, just for fun with Duolingo. I am quite at the beginning of the course, but I was surprised at how much I understood an interview of a chef speaking Spanish. Of course it helps that the vocabulary is so similar to English, but I still think that going to sleep with any of those vocabulary list videos on TH-cam made a difference. I am convinced sleep learning works as long as you also study the same material actively while awake: I remembered plant names and anatomical words in 3 languages for some 2 decades despite not having anything to do with the subject since that time.
