I am moved by so much you are showing us and with such good shots through the protective coverings. But in my heart of hearts, I love that they have Milne's personal "Winnie, the Pooh." Adults can learn so much from reading those works. It's fascinating to see the rather legible handwriting on Shakespeare's first folio of "Venus and Adonis" and to note all the editing Newton did in his undergraduate notebook. I understand these books and readers/students in that I have always loved reading books that others have owned and even notated in the margins. It makes the experience an ongoing conversation among the writer, all the readers, and oneself in a way that pristine books on which no one has commented within its pages or on the flyleaf, when giving it as a gift to another, cannot afford such a palpable sense of the transmission of knowledge, the sharing of a life. It is interesting to get the feeling that these men are our parents; they've brought our world into being in all the best senses of that. We owe Shakespeare & Newton & Milne so much. We owe them, at least, making sure their works are available for all peoples everywhere. The old furnishings are beautiful and so well-crafted. I love that they do not have the natural light from the windows blocked by book stacks. The illustrations and the calligraphy in the old works are just magnificent considering the materials they had to work with back then. The bookbindings, the moldings in the rooms, all so beautifully made with such care and pride. I love how elegant the cursive penmanship was back when people still thought words mattered and were one way for us to solve mysteries. I am pleased to know the library is recognized for its architecture. Even the details on the book stacks are exquisite.
Your heartfelt appreciation for the Wren Library is truly touching Philippa. It's wonderful to hear that you found such value in the details and treasures it holds, even through the protective coverings. The personal touch of Milne's "Winnie the Pooh" (which unfortunately I was unable to share) and the historical significance of works like Shakespeare's "Venus and Adonis" and Newton's notebook are indeed remarkable. Your insight about annotated books creating an ongoing conversation among readers, writers, and oneself sounds so poetic and I love that idea. It makes sense! 🙂These men, Shakespeare, Newton, Milne, indeed shaped our world, and we owe them so much. Preserving and sharing their works is a duty we hold. Yes, the craftsmanship of the furnishings, the delicate calligraphy, and the meticulous details in book-bindings are a testament to the care and pride that went into them. Your admiration for the elegant cursive penmanship and recognizing the library's architectural significance is a sentiment I wholeheartedly share. Thank you for sharing your profound reflections Philippa! See you soon. 🏛️🤗💗
