If you wanna go back and not lose the cue you can hit play again after pausing and it will go back to the cue, the cue is only lost once you create a new one by hitting the cue button when the track is paused; or just press the cue button instead of pause to stop the track and flip back to the cue point all in one press. ;)
Here's why I prefer Harris to many other teachers out there: He doesn't say stuff like "Here's why hotcues are better than the cue button". He says "Here's why I prefer hotcues". Many others seem to misunderstand that music is a performance art. The art bit of it comes down to personal preference of the artist. Even if you're playing other people's music, you're still an artist performing an act, with the decks as your canvas. There is no set way of doing any art and the only judge of what is "good" is whoever happens to observe the art at the moment. The method of getting the art from the base to the medium is largely irrelevant, it's the final product that matters. The teaching bit is helpful to understand the mechanics behind it, and a teacher that understands the art bit behind it and teaches their own style as just that, an alternative among many, will foster greater artists than those set in their ways telling their students by numbers.
Perfect explanation. I just purchases a DDJ-SB3, and I was having the same issue with the Cue button last night. I wonder if the Cue button helps with beat-matching more, but either way, I think I'll just start using the Hot Cue buttons instead, as they seem more reliable and helpful. I'm very much enjoying your videos! Keep it up! :)
I love hot cues. I use them for various reasons but one is to skip parts of songs that have no music or drops that significantly change the sound of the song.
Got back into DJ-ing after a few years off. Got myself a cheap deck that fits my tiny desk, as I'm most likely not gonna go on the road with it. A Hercules Air. A great little device, but my biggest two grievances are the gimmick of it, that they switched the Filter knobs out for a theremin-like sensor (which doesn't work with my DJ software) and that it has no hotcue keys. Now, fortunately for me, the reason the filter doesn't work is because it was merged with the effects in my software sometime after the Air came out and that broke it, which means I now have 4 buttons on each deck that does absolutely nothing. I just remapped those to hotcues instead. Sure, it means I have to do the tap-tap-play two-handed, but it's a LOT better than using the cue button. Think my next investment will be in an arduino and some buttons and knobs, so I can make myself some hotcue buttons and the missing effects/filter knobs and a MIDI interface and just have that separate on the side. Shouldn't cost more than £20-30 I think...
Love the example. I'm thinking of getting into it myself. Can you do a video tutorial and explain each part of the deck? That would really help me out. I subscribed early this morning by the way (February 8,, 2018).
Can skills you learn on the SX2 can be transferred and applied to a club dj booth? Like, if I'm learning on an SX2 will I be lost when I play on a nightclub set up or will many of the functions be similar/same?
hey bro I got a couple questions - could you reply please . I am wanting to buy a new controller - I want one which isn’t too expensive, has loads of features for me to use and play for parties but nothing too complex, what controller do you think I should get ? DDJ SB3 or DDJ RB? Serato or Rekordbox ? What’s the difference I currently use virtual dj, I wanna make a jump to either with a controller what do you suggest ? Does the DDJ XP1 work with Serato ? And last what is the best secondary midi controller to get ( not beginner level or complex - in between) Thank you very much if you reply :)
Myron buy the DDJ-400. At it‘s price of 250 dollars and an included full recordbox license it’s the best beginner controller you can’t get out there rn, my opinion :)
I always use 8 Hot Cues in nearly every Track it’s separated in Start, mix in, pre drop voice, Drop, Drop break, main rhythm (or loop) , buildup and end rythm... do you think this is too umsorted or can I do it like that?

You have a "simple" and CLEAR way of explaining/teaching,which is great.
Thanks!
Thank you - I have exactly the same problem with the Cue button - am really happy that it's not just me!

Tis what the |< symbol on the cue button means
i agree, i never use the Cue button, only hot cues. Nice video

That video helped a lot i really needed that thanks Phil
I actually midi mapped my cue buttons to sync pitch n time. I never have used cue buttons on my controller, hot cues are way better!! Great video man.
Same here, never use the cue button either, only get 4 hot cues on my reloop controller though.

Nice teaching and thank you sir!
Thanks for sharing ideas Phil

Interested in doing. I got sx2 controller
Great video and great advice thanks I now have a better understanding of hot cues

Hold shift and cue to return after pausing
I was to say...
@@marvinmalabanan1231 that is if your track doesn't have a small blank space before it starts...
You can play and hit cue or shift and hit cue whilsts paused to return to cue
Love the example. I'm thinking of getting into it myself. Can you do a video tutorial and explain each part of the deck? That would really help me out. I subscribed early this morning by the way (February 8,, 2018).
Hey, Already have th-cam.com/video/zLYYyqSy35U/w-d-xo.html
Cool. Thanks Phil.
You press play again and then cue to get back to the standard cue
very great tutorial 😍
You can have many more than 8.. By clicking the "Paramater" arrows you can switch between pages..
on my xdj rx2 i have a memory button to save more cue points
Does hot cue save when using another hardware
I like the part you can set as many as youd like...8
Can you loop on the pads. Like I try to build a build up but I could do with looping it straight away but my auto loop doesnt let me do it
RBHD same interest for me too ;)

Oh, and awesome vids by the way! Probably the best. Definitely in the top 5!
Yes but you will need to know how the hot cues work on other decks :)
Great video mate.
Thanks
Does hot cues doesn't loses once you set it in a certain track in a software once you shutdown your laptop?
No they stay permanently
Well explained Phil!! Tx

can*
So is there any advantage to the cue button? I mean, why does it even exist if we could just use Hot Cues?
I guess it is there as not all DJ decks have hot cues. But I never use it.
You cant have as many as you like! You can have 8! :) That aside, really enjoy your videos mate. Excellent work
Phil in recordbox dj, you can even have up to 16 in the full version

Fastpadder It’s personal preference, I use colours for my cues so I know what is what like green for breaks red for drops cyan for loops ect
Jamie Sherry yea I’m exactly using the same technique red for drops, orange for buildups etc.
Thank you!
Nice
That pause/cue has always annoyed me, you need to press play again then cue, i need to use my hot cues more
or just pause the track with the cue button, stops the track and resets to the cue in one press.
it is there for a reason
What's his equipment?
Pioneer DDJ-SX2
I don't bother to use the cue button either. I just use the hot cues instead
Anyone else see the white fork on the floor? DJing is lifestyle 24/7.
I assume you have to know the song really well to find your cue points spontaneously?
Ain’t gonna ask why u got TP there! ;-) lol
I hardly can hear you
Find Forky 🙈
Mini launchpad XD
Nice video, but if your song choices are any implication as to what you play when you DJ.... yikes
I don't bother to use the cue button either. I just use the hot cues instead
