I'm a Nuyorican lived in the Bronx during the 70s-80s, where black and Puerto Ricans got along very well had many Black friends, never had any issues, we were all poor but respected each other.
God bless this woman Joan. Shw saw that people (especially men ) just want respect and she was able to have an understanding with them. She probably helped them and they helped her.
I read an article about the Making of 80 Blocks From Tiffany's in Wax Poetics No. 38. This is a great movie about the pre-crack 1979 era of the South Bronx. Cult classic indeed.
If anything those cats were real much more than these generations coming up now. I was a kid during this time and remember how crazy and beautiful it all was,
@teoruz You are so right, can't have hip-hop without salsa music especially in the bronx. Grew up listening to Johnny Pacheco, Eddie Palmeri, Willie Colon and all the of the other great cuban, dominican and puerto rican bands of my day.Peace
Thanks for putting up this footie, man, this is great hard to find stuff. I've got an album & music vids built around grimy New York in 1977, and I'm def gonna work some of this footage into my project. Thanks again, never would have heard about this movie otherwise! dope
Ahhh, so that's why the gang dudes in that movie "The Warriors" all wore leather vests with the patches and whatnot. I I had no clue the look was based in reality
Unfortunately, the pretty female, "India," died because of AIDS in 1985. Her real name was Gladys. A couple of her siblings ended up murdered. The Bronx is a brutal place.
It's crazy that by 1979 the Skulls and Nomads were the only gangs left in the Bronx. They survived the gang wars of the early-mid 70's while the other gangs were long gone, either dead, locked up, strung out, or change their lives around. Some like the Black Spades got into hip hop. I would like to know what happened to the ppl in this film shortly after 1979. Specifically 1980-84
It seems like I get to see about 2 minutes of this video then it goes blank with the TV signing off screen. I guess TH-cam is about to attack this? Glad you put this up. I definitely would like to sit and watch.
Ok alot of people on here dont no the real truth on gangs from back then, first- the skulls and nomads were not the only gangs around in 1979" the were alot still around, the gangs faded out around 84"-85" right when crack came in, alot of gangs faded around the mid 70's but alot started around that time, dont belive wgat people saying that gangs stoped in the mid 70's, its a lie, it really stoped in the mid 80's
And there was the BRONX my dearly home which gives such pleasure to been part of this transformation then and now,I LOVE THE BRONX....HEY WHERE THE GUYS FROM ROCK STEADY CREW THEY WHERE MY NEIGHBORS....
daaaam hella old school i remember seeing this documentary back in the early 80s i think on pbs this is a cool documentary whats the name of the salsa song at the begining and whos the artist nice track 1 love from east oakland califaz ....
Thanks for a bit of knowledge and criticism, GoldenCrane7. I'm not from New York, I'm from the bay area and I grew up in San Francisco throughout the decade of the 70s and I've wondered about that too.
i was a kid during the 90s not in the usa or ny but misery was all around and danger the 70s oil shocks where still hanging and thank god i was a kid because when you are a kid you see things with different eyes and you adapt and you like the danger if i was my age back then it would be scary and depressing to die for, unemplyment no security net, crime poverty corruption etc i really thought back then the world was going to break apart
there was a cat here in queens, ( an old school cat ) i wanted to ask him about the bronx and the Chigalings, but he is sick now,,,,,, but i do find this history very intersting, i was in the bronx in the 80's and i remember seeing biker dudes around, and i always found it interesting
With more independence how do you think the gangs got the military weaponry that these guys didn't have access to(although Fly did say he saw military weaponry).
I've always wondered, if the people in these ghettos realize that those abandoned buildings are gold mines, imagine all the scrap metal. There thousands of dollars maybe tens of, in each of those big abandoned buildings. I wonder if they knew that, or maybe they're gutted first before being fully abandoned.
if you want to see another good documentary about gangs in early 80s my freind put one about mexican gangs in east oakland california just look up children of violence 1982 it's hella cool ....
@WAKEUPshift111 that's real talk...by the time this came out most gangs were all but gone...the nomads and the skulls weren't as strong as they were 7 years prior
Hip Hop could NEVER, ever have started in San Francisco, the bay area, believe that. And I'm from San Francisco. (Hayes Valley then later on Mission district early 70s and throughout) Peace.
Cop: "savage skulls & savage nomads think they're outlaws but really there just bums" Some one needs to tell that genius that todays gang Bangers are basically todays version of cowboy outlaws , just different times lmaoo, outlaws back then where bums who didnt work for there money either, they'd go out and steal it
There were all kinds of rap before the so called 'gangsta' rap and I still say the one who was saying it that got it known the world over is Just-Ice way before Ice-T or NWA.
No offense to anyone here that may have family members in this film but as a young kid in the 1970's I got jumped by members of the Savage Nomads and I was 11 f**king years old. I was from Brooklyn and it was the same old story with the gangs there like the Crazy Homicides, Ghetto Brothers and Tomahawks. they were all a miserable bunch of cowards. There were very few that could actually fight worth a damn.
It would be interesting to verify via some database if in fact what someone has claimed here is true or not. Like I said if it is true, that was one true savage. I was born in those times and miss the abandoned bldgs. I also miss that since we had nothing economically, one had true friends and a girlfriend(s) that really cared for one. That is what I miss from those times namely the simplicity of it all. The fact that those times are gone did end all those massive crime sprees.
WOW-this is great. I have a film coming out that deals with FEMALE GANGS in the bronx that spans the years of 1980 to present. type in SURRENDER directed by Damian Bailey and you will see scenes from the movie. This is great.
@obadboystanley i grew up when this and hell yeah it was i dont love violence but the violence made it looked cool and the graffiti i used to tag up and i used to chill with fly he was word on the neighborhood cuz back then if you did something cool or bad you were the word on the whole neighborhood no cell phones or aim needed lmfao
My dad was Comanche and I was born and raised in South Bronx born in the old Lincoln Hospital. I remember it like it was yesterday the good times.

"Pretty soon they're gonna steal the damn atom bomb" hahaha that shit was funny
