The Marlin 336 Classic in .30/30 Win.

  • The Marlin 336 handles exactly how a big-woods lever action should. It’s quick to shoulder, points instinctively, and-for a lever gun in .30/30-is pretty accurate. It’s also a hell of a value-assuming you can find one for the MSRP. For the time being the demand will continue to outstrip the supply but be patient and sooner or later you’ll be able to acquire one.

    I saw a vintage Marlin catalog listing the 336 carbine for $61.45. That amount in 2023 money would be roughly $773.51 - $764.00, according to multiple online inflation calculators. That said, I would much rather see these rifles being built RIGHT, rather than being built CHEAP. Our entire, import-based economy today is oversaturated with things built cheaply. Ruger, by contrast, is making these rifles the way they should be made. I anticipate that prices will come down once they produce enough of these to increase supply, but until then, I cannot say I am disappointed. If it is expensive, but built the way it should be, then that is what I will pay to get one.

      @@jerroldshelton9367 a couple of things. Most older Marlins have :microgroove rifling instead of regular - Ballard - rifling. Microgroove is OK for jacketed bullets but can be a problem with lead bullets. Of the processes used to make barrels, hammer forged is 1 step below cut rifling in terms of quality/accuracy. Button rifling is the least expensive process. Button rifled barrels can be very accurate but not necessarily in mass production. It’s important to remember that Marlins were a working man’s gun, not something fancy, and minute-of-deer accuracy was good enough.

      $61.45 for the regular Birch wood model. $99-$110 for the nicer models. Ruger does not make a cheap base model. This rifle is way nicer than what I got for my 16th birthday back in 1997, that rifle a 336W was $390.

    Bought this rifle at Rural King a few weeks ago for just under $950. That price is a good deal for white-tailed deer brush hunting in Northern Virginia. Happy I got it at that price and for my purpose. Bought a Vortex scope with o-rings that leave room for the iron sights. Great setup and can’t wait to hunt this fall. The Ace hardware near me always has 30-30 at a fair price so no worries there.

The trigger pull is near 8 lbs. very heavy trigger which affects accuracy big time. Why this heavy trigger pull when Remingtons was so light? Cheaper to build with heavy triggers perhaps? I bought a new 336 when they were being built by Remington. With Varget and Hornady 150-grain RN bullets, it will shoot under 1 MOA. Additionally, the action is slick, and it looks good. Ruger is insane asking that much for one I have Remingtons version for 2018 and aside from a not noticeable mark on the handgrip if perfect shoots 3/4 groups at 100 yards and I paid 380 at duhnams brand new 1200 no thank you

    $1200 for a 30/30 that used to be $500 give or take....nope. I paid $485 for my 336C in 2016. By that time they were just fine after remington squared away the initial low quality fit. Mine is dead on at 100 yds, considering I have never shot a whitetail farther than 71 steps. I am not paying anyone $1200 for a 30/30 just because Ruger stamped their name on it. I am a hunting guy, a lever gun deer rifle guy, but not a $1200 30/30 lever gun guy. 😅

    Did they upgrade the weak Marlin ejector?

    • @jerroldshelton9367
      @jerroldshelton9367 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      How many of those "weak Marlin ejectors" have you broken in your lifetime?
      I've had my Marlin 336 since I was an 11 year old kid in 1976. I haven't managed to break mine in 47 years of use and I'm pretty sure I have used and continue to use my 336 more than most owners do.
      Just since 2007, when I started tracking how many rounds I'm running through it, it's had to eject over 7,000 cases in range use alone and I have no idea exactly how many rounds I ran through it for the first 31 years I've had it, but most years, I'd take it to the range at least quarterly and shoot at least 120 rounds in a range session with it.
      I'm way more concerned about eventually needing to have the barrel replaced than replacing the ejector.
      And it's not like it's brain surgery to remove and replace the 336's ejector. Mine comes out and goes back in every time I have the bolt out to clean the bore.

    Yes, the cosmetics are very nice. However, in addition to the whopping 8 pounds of trigger pull, there are other TH-cam reports of these new Marlins having trigger creep. If I'm going to spend over $1K for a rifle, it better have a trigger that breaks line a glass rod. And because most stores will never let you test the trigger before you buy, you don't know what you've got until you fork over the cash.

    • @cs-rj8ru
      @cs-rj8ru 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, you're basing things on hearsay a bit here. Yes some of the Rugers have a little creep. The 1894s seem to be worse than the 336s (from the couple I've actually seen). Marlin wasn't known for match triggers in the past either. Im a FFL and have had MANY used marlins come and go. Triggers vary allot. My personal 444ss had a gem of a trigger, crisp and no creep breaking at exactly 3lbs. Most have more creep and weight.
      Some shops let you try. When I bought a new 1894 I bought it retail as I couldn't order one. (Never in stock). I tried the trigger 3 times before doing paperwork. Place your thumb in front of the hammer to prevent it from slamming home. No clerk will stop you.
