Coke: one hellava drug. Unpopular opinion coming in…he is 65% interesting and on point, 35% completely full of shit. And to prove his point, I put it together by watching a couple songs, this interview, and his wiki. (And if he was honest with himself he’d say I just bullseyed the board)
Whether it's an interview or not, it's sure as shit more insightful hearing him say what's on his mind other than hearing the answers from the ridiculous questions this interviewer may or may not have asked him. So brilliant. Protect this man at all costs!
just listened to his band for the first time and there's some mind blowingly good material, somehow I wasn't expecting this kind of interview out of him. Interesting character though
Can't wait for the new 2019 album! I recently heard an interview on Public Radio, and found Bradford Cox so compelling that I had to listen to his music. He's an original artist that deserves a huge following. The music is iconic, it draws you in. It's worth knowing his backstory. His ideas are brilliant and the music stands for itself.
Last night I was watching an interview the filmmaker Terry Gilliam did recently, and he spoke about the same thing in regards to current culture and there being too many distractions. I'm glad that some artists are discussing this and I think it's a step forward that more creative people are becoming more conscious of what they listen to/watch or how much they consume certain media and the effects this may have on their work and/or ability to create original work. At the end of Fellini's 8 1/2 there's a monologue said by a character that is so relevant to today, I really recommend watching or just looking that part up online. It's funny that Bradford mentions a "void" because there's a line about that in there too. Here's some of it: "No need for nostalgia or remorse. Destroying is better than creating when we're not creating those few truly necessary things. But is there anything so just and true in this world that it has the right to live?”
Fern Fernis Fernie Or instead of looking up the quote online, we could immerse ourselves and watch the film in its entirety! It is an incredible work of art. I plan to rewatch soon - I'll keep an ear out for that quote, thanks. :)
Wow, what Bradford said about culture and music was really thought-provoking. I feel like Bradford is either a journalist's dream or a journalist's nightmare. For some he does their work for them - they don't need to ask a question because he just talks and talks and loves doing it. For some he makes it really awkward and difficult haha, and I've seen lots of interviewers completely fail to rise to his level when he's in that sort of mischievous mood. This interview was the former, thankfully.
Yeah, but music supposed to be about enjoyment, which is like you know when he makes the tracks sound good and that’s all that matters I mean you could say the same about Deerhoof
The nose business! No no no don’t do it! And then he does it again. Should I really be questioning public on camera nose picking? I don’t know. I give him a pass. It seems so unselfaware that it’s kind of refreshing
There are something really important on what he's talking about. Zygmunt Baumann touches on this theme on his works. I mean, the culture is ending up, ou generation, our era is liquified, our time, our human relations are so quick and end up so fast, and publicity, via internet, is just always controlling and molding our way of thinking, unfortunately this affects our culture, that does not have an identity. That's so sad... :/
Decline of an underground scene is kinda wrong; it has pivoted because the internet. Now you see trends pop up and go so quickly. You just gotta know where to look. I don't think having stuff readily available is bad either. We always always always criticise of over saturation of technology (see: every film since 2000), but never on self-control. It's like people complaining they can't read e-books compared to hardback (admittedly I was like this before) -- don't you see that's a reflection of you and not the medium itself? My opinion, anyway, is self-control is everything, especially with the internet/digital outlets.
"don't you see that's a reflection of you and not the medium itself? My opinion, anyway, is self-control is everything, especially with the internet/digital outlets." To say that media does not reflect the individual is a huge understatement. One could easily argue that streaming services and the Internet in general has created a devalue of content and consequently less self control to content itself. Media IS an extension of the individual.
+ern isern wait, I said the medium, dude. As in, how we access the media. And yeah, I've heard about devaluing content, but again, I find that to be more of a reflection on the individual than anything. I utterly hate the object fetishism culture we have, especially in regards to vinyl. It's become a status symbol more than anything these days.
It's both universal. We need to work on our self-control and discipline I agree. But technology contributes to it and vice versa. And many other factors. however solve the problem from both sides. Balance
Holy shit! I love Brad and Deerhunter, and I dig what he is saying about finding source of information and inspiration, but that interview is just hilarious! 😂 Sound like something straight from GTA radio station. I like it though.
Who the fuck gave cocco to this guy??... no, seriously, the thruth is that I agree with all he says to the letter. I also like his music, nevertheless I'm going to start a band anyway. I love you Bradford. I wish you were my bigger brother. or a close friend.
Just tell me what thm means. Tell me your stories from your life. I like your ideas/philosophies. I’d prefer to hear about what made you you. Talk about GA. Tell more about that tape you made in ‘94 and so on
i don’t think Marfan’s Syndrome has anything to do with his cognitive state. It’s a physical disease. I could be wrong, though - perhaps his physical state has influenced his mental state over the years. I like him either way,
In my opinion he almost makes some interesting or somewhat original points but just falls short of the mark. He seems too quick to doubt himself and worries about coming across as a hypocrite. To me it looks like he suffers heavily from cognitive dissonance. I really like Deerhunter's music. Not sure if I like his mostly aimless rant. I'm surprised people find this particularly interesting or important. Maybe he feels at an age and at a time where he's not the young, cool kid in an exciting world anymore, now he's working in a bit of a hollow industry/culture as an adult in which he wishes held more meaning and authenticity. I somewhat agree that culture now holds little importance in the modern western world. The problems of a throw-away, internet, everything now, consumer based culture. I get the points he makes but to me it's very obvious, not very thought provoking or interesting. I also think it's simply too cynical a way to think. I guess if it makes people think about what culture means to them or how one can be more active within our own communities to further facilitate or create culture; than maybe something can be taken away from this. Also, is he drunk or just like this?
sucks when you get the opportunity to interview Bradford Cox on your radio station and have to admit on camera that you don't know 20th century music history ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Seems very talented, but his lack of education and refinement is a little more prevalent than I think he can understand. It's a train wreck listening to the discombobulated bouncing around. He's high, or stupid. But hey, he's a damn creative guy and that's what matters.
It seems like he is nervous. He doesn't do interviews too much. He has said that the reason Deerhunter has stayed together for so long is because they don't do drugs... Also, he has Marfan's. It's why he is so thin, not drugs. 💓
Good Lord stop picking at your nose man! Have some class, some manners. Starting at 17:36 Literally in 12 seconds he picks his nose FIVE times! Gross. Creepy enough he is as it is, but then he has to go picking his nose, my goodness. Yuck man.
Bradford Cox is so important. A true icon and a complete sweetheart, my biggest musical hero.
couldnt agree more
Length of question: 4 seconds
Length of answer: 23 minutes and 24 seonds

He's important. Truly. Deeply. Passionately important.
Great artist
Great band. The world needs more humans like this.
“Everyone in LA and NYC are just playing dress up”

This could practically be a scene from Waking Life.
Such a great comment

He's damn good at his job lol
Lol sooo chill *slaps leg*
just listened to his band for the first time and there's some mind blowingly good material, somehow I wasn't expecting this kind of interview out of him. Interesting character though
I love how he said the Fuck like 3 times in the interview and then in the last quarter spelt out S-H-I-T like it was Taboo.
+Cj Hunt trying not to curse but i guess he got really caught up with what he was talking aboot... :)
Bradford basically interviews himself. Just press "Play". :)
man I love Bradford, I love Deerhunter. Just barely get him started and he goes off hahah, lots of ideas in that noggin.
@The Fading Frontier awesome username, they’re probably in my top 5 all time.
We need more people like him in the world.
count me in

This was a very good interview; this guy has some really inciteful commentary.
weird, but one of the few genuinely interesting people I've heard recently
Streaming in to the vodi! How come I didn't come across him sooner! I know his band but I didn't know he was such a character!!!!! Epic
"Music is truly asphyxiating on its own vomit" Bradford Bradford Bradford I can listen to him talk all day
I just discovered Halcyon Digest and Bradford's music. I think he's the real deal. I'm so looking forward to playing his music everyday.
One of the best interviews I've ever seen in my life.

do you think he takes adderall?

+michael louro He has Marfans Syndrome.
+Semilore Olusa - thanks, that disease sounds awful but at least it's not stopping him from what he loves

what a different person, but i like it.
Brad's pronunciation of Nykvist is closer.
profound.
Sadly his description of what you would be getting with their latest album i.e. middle of the road indie, was all too accurate.

Bradford has changed his looks a bit! Like, thicker.
21:38 - 22:21
Bradford actually looks healthier in the face. His affliction is tough to cope with.
has no idea what he's saying. sorry. love his LPs.
