When I was a wee lad I played the Midnight RPG by Fantasy Flight. Its grim and edgy BUT it had a magic system different from typical D&D
You are a channeler, you pick your spellcasting origin as either spiritual, nomadic, and charismatic each offering unique backgrounds to your spell casting origin whether you were self taugh, taught by spirits of the land or just had a natural talent for it.
As you level up you either unlock schools of magic or more spells from that school. Additionally, you no longer have spell slots, you have spell energy or spell points.
Overall it makes for highly customizable casters and I love it. Thanks for the systems I will give em a look over.
