seems like someone is interviewing him. Brilliant approach as he has a focus instead of just a camera. great info. much appreciated

One way to describe formulaic versus spontaneous magic is by comparing it to music. Formulaic is like playing a written song. It's well refined and thought out. Spontaneous on the other hand is like making up a new melody on the fly. Your innate understanding of music helps you out but it might be a bit rough.

I have been playing Ars Magica since third edition and I strongly recommend the fifth edition.
They have managed to work out a lot of problems from the previous editions and have made the rules much more consistant and easy to use.
Also the quality of the layout and artwork has become much better. The writing and the historical research is excellent as usual.
I wish this game had a larger player base. Unfortunately it is hard to recruit new players because the game is not as well known and easily accessible as other systems.
Playing Ars Magica is nothing for the inpatient. My longest Ars Magica campaign lasted for ten years (real time) and my current campain is in it´s third year now.

I agree, the game deserves way more players. I would love to watch campaigns in TH-cam, for example.

Ars Magica is one of my favorite games of all time. 4th Ed. came out while my group was playing and we tried to adopt it, but (if my memory is accurate) the combat rules were nearly unplayable. I don't think the magic system was altered too much from other editions. I strongly recommend 5th Ed., as it seems to me to be the most approachable and playable edition.

An excellent video about a wonderful game; I saw hoping that you would include it in this series. I remember playing this back at a Gen Con UK in the early 1990s (I think) and we had a blast. The magic terms all being in Latin added to the flavour but did take time to get used to. That said, we were pretty much comfortable casting spontaneous magic before too long. All in all, this is probably one of the best games I’ve never had a chance to really play.

Game written by Johnathan Tweet and Mark Rein Hagen. Rein Hagen was the guy who brought you Vampire and the rest of the WoD.
So pretty much everything in this game is the foundation VtM is built on.

Bundle of Holding has 5th edition and a TON of the extra books as bundles this month if you're still looking to pick it up!
I'm still trying to decide if I'll pick them up so thanks for the vid! :D

It is the only game I know of that has a whole supplement for Jewish characters and kaabalistic magic. It goes deep into historical realism for the medieval society.

You keep coming out with banger after banger. I love your channel, Quest Wise! Quickly becoming a favorite of mine, and I always get excited when I see you dropped a video.

I love magic! I cut my teeth in ad&d 2e, and remember sitting in the library for hours reading the spell/magic supplements. I have to get this game!

Such a cool old game. I'm so surprised to see it still around as I forgot all about it. I got my 2nd edition back in the 90s but never got a chance to play it. Such a great magic system. Great vids man. Subscribed! ..... I really like your laid back videos, i wonder if we could collaborate on something some day.

Absolutely! I really dig your GURPS combat videos. They have reinvigorated my love for that tactical and cinematic system. Game on!

@@questwise4077 Why thanks you, but Good golly man I'm just watching your Love letter to Palladium Fantasy vid now and I can't believe the similarities of our RPG upbringings in late 80s. From Kingston Ontario here. Great video again, you've got me browsing the Palladium online store now lol I agree fully about how intuitive and great Palladium Fantasy was over D&D (and still is). Well done.

Can't mess with miracles and souls?
I didn't expect to find religious dogma in an RPG xD

A small mistake: not anybody can cast magic by study, you must possess the Gift.
