  • Dear IELTS candidates,
I have created this video lesson to teach you how to answer fully a cue card.
I highly recommend using the following strategies:
    1) When you are given a cue card, pay close attention to the main topic. Write no more than 2 words associated with the main topic in your notes and circle them. You should then draw 4 radiating lines. Answer each question on the cue card beside each line. This mind map will help you to see the central idea and 3 or 4 precise answers.
    2) When giving a 2-minute presentation, focus on the central idea circled and each additional point associated with each line.
    3) Use linking devices to make smooth transitions between your ideas. For example:
I would like to describe/talk about_____(the central idea) The reason for choosing____is/was___(point 1) As far___as__is/are concerned, (point 2)____As to why ___(point 3)
    4) Try not to use too many negative expressions. Replace them with gentler language. For example:
The reason I am not too happy about____I cannot stand___I find it really dreadful. I find it difficult to put up with.
    5) Let your voice go down at the end of your presentation. Don’t say ‘finished’ or ‘that’s all’. Alternatively, you could summarise your main points. For example: ‘Therefore, I really enjoy playing sports’. This will let the examiner know that you have finished your presentation.
