  • On March 10, 1968, Cream recorded a live version of "Crossroads" during a performance at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. It's my personal favorite performance of the song by any act.
    RIP Jack Bruce 1943-2014
    RIP Ginger Baker 1939-2019
    I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees
    Down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees
    Asked the Lord above for mercy, "Save me if you please"
    I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride
    Down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride
    Nobody seemed to know me, everybody passed my eye
    Well I'm going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side
    Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side
    You can still barrel house, baby, on the riverside
    Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side
    Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side
    You can still barrel house, baby on the riverside
    "You can run, you can run", tell my friend boy, Willie Brown
    "Run, you can run", tell my friend boy Willie Brown
    And I'm standing at the crossroads, believe I'm sinking down.

      --A large randomized controlled trial with close to 8000
      participants, published in October 2020 in PLOS One, found that face masks “did not seem to be effective against laboratory-confirmed viral respiratory infections nor against clinical respiratory infection.”
      --A February 2021 review by the European CDC found no high-quality evidence in favor of face masks and recommended their use only based on the ‘precautionary principle’.
      --A May 2020 meta-study on pandemic influenza published by the US CDC found that face masks had no effect, neither as personal protective equipment nor as a source control.

      --A 2015 study in the British Medical Journal BMJ Open found that cloth masks were penetrated by 97% of particles and may increase infection risk by retaining moisture or repeated use.
      --An August 2020 review by a German professor in virology, epidemiology and hygiene found that there is no evidence for the effectiveness of face masks and that the improper daily use of masks by the public may in fact lead to an increase in infections.

    I honestly don't believe I will ever get tired of listening to this, and the louder the better. It knocked my socks off in 1968 when I was a snot nosed know-it-all punk of 15, it knocks my socks now as a curmudgeonly senior citizen of 65, and it'll be knocking my socks off when I'm a senile old geezer with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. Simply the most kick-ass live guitar performance in the history of rock music, imho--the "gold standard" by which all other live guitar performances are measured.

    • @terencedoherty3049
      @terencedoherty3049 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Totally agree. Funny how many people say that. This thing is just devastating, but the main driving force was Baker. This is the only version I've ever heard where Baker sharply emphasized the fourth beat and added an upbeat, and that pushed Clapton in a direction he had never taken this song before---or anytime thereafter.

    • @rhowardwooden6679
      @rhowardwooden6679 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Terence Doherty that is a fantastic point and I went back to listen to other takes and you are right. It truly does make it. Much more controlled and nuanced, gives room for great rhythmic dynamics that all three seem to use. Far more controlled and obvious they all listening to each other. You've giving me more insight into one of the greatest rock performances. Thanks.

    • @terencedoherty3049
      @terencedoherty3049 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @High Street Media: Here's something else: Clapton gets out ahead of things, which is why he has never liked this version. You can hear him say so, at the end of the song. Jack says, "Eric Clapton please," to which Eric responds, "Thank you....kerfuffle!" I think that plus Ginger's unusual drumming actually make this song. The whole thing is just falling out ahead of itself, like a runner leaning for the tape, and almost falling head over heels. But notice how in the first solo, Baker reels Clapton in with 8 straight beats right on the beat, beginning at 2:07. 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..then everybody converges perfectly, right at 2:11. Fantastic. But Eric can't seem to help himself...the adrenaline is just too much, and he repeatedly accelerates out in front at breakneck pace, beginning just even before he sets out on the second solo.and Baker and Bruce repeatedly play catch-up, but he just keeps a step ahead. I think this is just awesome, and contributes to the tremendous excitement and pyrotechnics of the piece. I don't care what Eric thinks...he's too much of a perfectionist, but the song is just too raw and powerful to be limited by "correct" technique. Sorry Eric...kerfuffle or not, this is without doubt the finest, most powerful rock/blues guitar solo ever played, or even imagined. Eric himself---much less any other guitarist in the world---couldn't repeat it again if he tried, and that's one of the reasons this version of that classic Robert Johnson song will never be equaled. For 4 minutes and 3 seconds, Clapton showed the world why he is God.

I agree Steve harris is a hell of a fast bass player, but with a good technique and lot of training you'll play his bass lines as on records, while you won't be able to improvise 1/4 of what Bruce played that night

      Ever since I first heard this in 1968, this still sends chills up my spine. God gets the absolute finest solo of his or anyone else's career, but Baker and Bruce sure as hell get a whole lot of the credit too. Listening to this is like watching the 10,000 meter finals at the London Olympics, or Beckham's famous free kick that blew the roof off and put England in the World Cup finals in 2002. Baker first catapults Clapton ahead at 1:48, then again at 1:58, then saves the day by bringing him back down to earth with 8 beats at 2:07. Then he and Bruce push things totally out of control at 2:33, then back to the structure at 3:02 albeit briefly, but Clapton just won't be contained, and takes charge from there on. What a wild ride...which is why he (rather sheepishly) comments, "kerfuffle" just at the tail end of the recording. Kerfuffle or no (Clapton always hated this version), this is far and away the single greatest blues/rock guitar solo ever recorded.

      @@terencedoherty3049 - I've worked with Eric now for the past 18 years, owning and running the sound company he uses, and I've managed to have a conversation or two on this cut, and at no time has he ever regretted this solo. Matter of fact, he claims it was his best impromptu solo, the second one, especially, ever recorded.

      I've been a bass player since the mid sixties and have been a fan of Jack Bruce since I first heard Cream about 1966. I've listened to this recording (and all the other Cream recordings) thousands of times over the years. Clapton at his finest during Cream using his iconic Gibson SG Standard with the psychedelic paintings called "The Fool". I saw Cream in April 68 and sadly, no live recording, even Wheels of Fire or Live Cream can capture the raw, massive power of his Gibosn guitar as heard through a dual Marshall stack live and close up.
    That sound ripped up our spines and changed our approach to guitar permamently as it did for generations of others including Van Halen, Duane Allman, Mike Bloomfield, Page, Beck, Eric Johnson and now his greatest progeny, Joe Bonamassa. Lets not forget that even Hendrix greatly admired Clapton and considered him is only competition. It was Clapton's Bluesbreakers with John Mayall LP that set a new bar for Hendrix to follow, to the point, he made it an absolute condition to meet Clapton when Chas Chandler invited him to England. Hendrix even purchased a Gibson SG although it was a white standard or custom (which he rarely used live). Those two radically altered the electric plectrum guitar landscape for centuries to come if not longer.

      Mike Bloomfield was doing his thing in 1965! Haven't you heard Dylan's Newport Set? Clapton was hugely impressed when he first saw him with The Butterfield Blues Band. They were doing the same thing 1000's of miles apart without ever knowing what the other was doing. Its unlikely that Bloomfield would have been aware of Clapton in 1965!

    Amazing performance!. I was a classical musician as a child, and when I heard this, I felt as if both Clapton and Bruce had scored their breaks, though I knew damn well it was improvisation. They both played, to my ears, the best rock solos I had ever heard. @Tony McQuarters You nailed it. I looked down after I had written my note, and lo and behold, somebody felt exactly as I did. Love it when that happens, and I'm 69 and disabled now. but even though I am in excruciating pain, I force myself to play through it for at least 30 minutes a day...

      Arbeedubya .... Your comment ("A curse on whoever made the decision to tear down the Winterland") strongly suggest that you should acquaint yourself with the facts about the demise of the Winterland. Because the main reason why the Winterland was demolished is because structural engineers determined that it was an unsafe structure.
      So, in light of your inaccurate, febrile comment , it is well to point that, the next time that you feel the urge to post another comment, you'd do well to take the time to check the facts --- which is to say that, before you post any more DOPEY comments, you'd do well to take the time to pull your head out of your ARSE!

      I came across some interesting information. EC is not using the 335 on either Fillmore or Winterland. He was using the Fool SG on both venues. Later this year (1968) EC was using the 335 on the RAH (Farewell) concert.

    • @howardjohnston6112
      @howardjohnston6112 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Allan Ladd Correct. It was exclusively the Fool SG at the Winterland & Fillmore gigs in Feb & March 1968. This remained the case up until around late April / early May, when he started introducing his new purchase - the Gibson Firebird. By the time of the Farewell US Tour the Firebird was his preferred axe of choice - his back-up being a welcome return to the Gibson Les Paul. The ES-335 famously appeared at the second/final (8.30pm) Farewell Cream Concert at the RAH (26/11/68) with the Firebird having been used at the earlier (6.30pm) one. You see both in the film. There are photos of EC using the Gibson ES-335 semi-acoustic at the LA Forum gigs in mid November 1968. It is thought he might be playing it on 'I'm So Glad' (on Goodbye). But 'Politician' sounds like his Les Paul to me and 'Sitting On Top Of The World' could also either be his Firebird or his ES-335. So it seems like he did use it before the Royal Albert Hall gig.

    • @genericgeorge
      @genericgeorge 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The intensity of the playing matches the intensity of Robert Johnson, its writer. The song just bulldozes its way to the top of the rock and roll heap.

      Even Jimi used to wipe his forehead off and shake his head when listening to EC's version of this classic. He said that no one, not even himself would ever be able to match this version. He was sitting with me and Taj Mahal in my apartment above the Whiskey in 1969 when he said it.

    That audio is from the album "Wheels of Fire" and it was recorded in the Fillmore. Clapton was playing a Gibson SG, not the ES335 shown ion this footage.

    My favorite song from my favorite all-time band. Jack Bruce was the guy that lit my musical fire back in 67-68.

    What makes this one of the greatest live performances ever is the fact that all three are playing "lead". Lead guitar, lead bass, lead drums...
