You need to level the outboard when you fill it or the gear case won't be completely full. Just to verify, I checked with Yamaha tech support and there is a video on TH-cam for this same task and he points out this same fact about tilting the outboard down to level on the refill
Steve Smart You make a good point. But when you are filling the lower unit with oil. The way you have to full it from the bottom. It pushes all the air and fills all spaces as you fill to the top. So, In theory there should not be any unfilled spaces in the lower unit when oil comes out the top hole. And plus it has to be some room in the lower unit so the oil can move. Because if it was filled with not air space it would barely turn because oil does not compress.
Nice job . . . you lifted the engine up for proper and faster draining - would lowering it before refilling help the process especially for not losing as much oil out the bottom plug hole when you remove the pump tube? thanks!
David Bee Thanks for the comment. To me. I don't think it would matter either way. You are going to lose a little oil out the lower drain screw hole. But either way we just want the lower unit oil changed. Thanks for watching.
Amazon.com. You can get a kit with the Yamalube gear oil, 2 new gaskets for the plugs (they are crush gaskets and should not be reused), and the pump with tubing and the fitting to put on the end of the tubing for filling.
aaron billiot I don’t understand your comment? Are you saying if you don’t change the fluid in your foot. You burn it up. Or you are saying I’m doing something wrong?
Good Job on the video. Just what the doctor ordered, thought I was loosing my mind looking for that bottom drain plug. Thank you sir!
Diesel Bassing Thanks, and no you are not crazy. Thanks for watching.
Great job! Same motor here. Thanks brother!

Hey Brother. Hope you’re doing well. Did the bottom drain plug have a seal/gasket on it?
Yes, it has a fiber o-ring. The good one are some kind of fiber material not rubber. Just like a fiber washer.

Where did you find the fitting, on the end of the pump hose, that you used to screw into the lower drain hole, was it a certain one for a Yamaha???
Rocky Top Splash I get all my Yamaha parts at www.simyamaha.com. Go to special tools then lower unit. You will find it there.
