The show seemed to have very little action on the surface, but it was loaded with depth. It showcased the highest form of warfare - winning without fighting. Toranaga is a true master of the Art of War. You know, Sun Tzu talks about how it's all about strategy, deception, and psychological warfare, not just brute force. And that's exactly what we see from Toranaga in this show.
Episode 9 was 10x insane than finale..
It's one episode - the second (tenth) picks up a nanosecond after the first ends (ninth). I timed it to watch one after another. Very satisfying.
Toranaga tricked us all
He's 4th wall thru the screen is totally the 3rd heart move. Even us feel like yabu, on the cliff looking at toranaga sama and said..... "well played, dono"
Darkest deepest bad guy always portrays himself as a saint. But hey, the end justifies its mean.
Anthony blinken
He tricked me i thought he eas a worrior but he is a little bitch he sent his most trusted to sacrificed himself so he doesn't have to fight
the show tricked us all in building up to absolutely nothing
I don't need an Epic Battle, I just want Fujisama to be Best Nun
"let your hands be the last to hold her" that hit hard
wow Toranaga is such a great trickster he even tricked the viewers that all this build up would lead to an epic battle...
I also expect a show about chess to suddenly introduce rocket launchers.
ffs..
@@milosmilosmilos this ain't queens gambit lil bro
@@milosmilosmilos yeah it's crazy to expect an epic battle from a show that is about politics in feudal Japan with some fights then and there, the same show that showed a 5 second army scene in the episode teaser to hype up a battle just to end the show with Toranaga standing in the wilderness
I really wanted more fights.. not for the simple reason of it looking cool but they all had such unique fighting styles, blackthorn in particular when finally seeing him use his pistols made me want more
A huge battle would have ruined the tone of the show.
Mariko herself is the Crimson Sky.
She's more than anyone imagined. She is disappointed in humanity n selfishness. Some place themselves only to create disorder. Cross is not something she had or believed in. Jewish w responsibility of 4 directions.
When toronaga says-Why tell a dead man the future before cutting yabusigae's head off was the exact line that yabusigae says during the first episode of the series.
After Toranaga becomes shogun he eventually gets Ochiba and her son to commit seppuku, he really was playing everyone from the start and would stop at nothing to rule Japan
Like why couldn’t we have at least seen that? It would’ve been a great payoff and really showed Toranagas true nature. Instead it ended right before any sort of climax. I’m fine with no big battle but you gotta give us at least something.
@@Bob-po2dpBut what if there's gonna be a movie?
Her son too? Thats evil bro
@@TravellerTinker well her son was the true heir so he had to go
@@Bob-po2dp Because the story ended right before the battle. The climax was at episode 9 with Mariko's death, and episode 10 is basically the story about how her death affect everything. Toranaga is technically already won, so the story ended there.
The series ended exactly how I expected it to. Toranaga said multiple times he didn't want a war. He did everything possible to avoid a war. The final episode stuck to Toranaga's statements
Booooooooooo
But there is a war is the problem.
Yabushige is the future Emmy winner. 😂
After the death of Mariko-sama, I could have said, "Who cares what happens next," and I partly felt this after Episode 9. At the same time, I believe we witnessed a fitting conclusion. The duo of Fuji and John, as well as Toranaga and Yabu, worked exceptionally well in their scenes. When the fates of Fuji and John intertwined in mourning and letting go, it was emotionally a very strong and touching scene. I'm glad we got to see Fuji's character several times in the finale. It was also good to see when Buntaro showed respect to John and joined the work at the end of the episode. This short scene also indicated significant character development. Many mention that we didn't see a battle. In my opinion, there was no need for it. In this series, the true value often lay in the unsaid, implied, or non-verbally expressed aspects. For my part, I congratulate the creators and thank them for the experience!
While I’m not against the ending I did wish for more, especially considering in the original we saw the victory of toranaga not just a simple “my plan will pay off one day… next month” ishido didn’t get defeated at all yet. It definitely opens the door for a second season. Despite them saying they won’t. I felt lied to considering the director said the show would in ep 10 be wrapped up perfectly to the . At the end but this felt like a part one rather then a full story conclusion.
Yeah, they built up a villain but don't offer closure. Only a promise of closure.
But he did. We know what happens, Toranaga explains it to Yabu and we even see it, the Heir and the Council no longer support Ishido and the battle was won without a drop of blood.
@@lucasbelmonte2832 while he hints at the being the outcome there is no Guarantee for a show called shogun, he wasn’t shown becoming shogun just the build up towards the main battle in which he’d earn the image to request it but as I said the first show did it significantly better then this. It felt lacklustre compared to the amazing writing and build up in prior episodes from shinobi attack to the amazing double kill of episode 9 by the brown samurai. This felt cheap and underwhelming. A half completed feeling to the many of us.
@@Honestly_take_the_hint But he'd already won in episode 9 with Marikos death. This was the epilogue. It was never going to show him becoming shogun, but anyone with a non american brain knows he will.
@@lucasbelmonte2832 while not disputing the intention as I’ve said they showed everything in the 1980s version, I would’ve been fine with a 1-2 minute battle and him being recognised in a narrative format to being made shogun but they left it at a point before that hinting at the dominos without showing him winning outside of his enemies Ally sending a letter saying I’m not showing up. In the first series and story they talk about ishidos death and toranagas Victory, his appointment to shogun
In episode 1 Yabushige tells Omi, "why tell a dead man the future", referring to the ship, weapons and Anjin. Toranaga says that exact line to him before he chops his head off...Omi was working for Toranaga all along IMO. That was the smile Yabushige gave to Toranaga and Toranaga to him before the sword came down...the realization that Toranaga planned it all.
I think so too. For a while because of Kiku, Omi wanted Toranaga's position. But after Nagakado died (he also briefly used him), he finally became completely loyal to Toranaga? Toranaga really wants everyone to be loyal to him.
And maybe Kiku knew that he had been a spy all along. hmm hmm. Everyone plays their game to get their wish..
Kashiki Yabushige (樫木藪重), played by Asano Tadanobu (浅野忠信), finally committed seppuku and died in episode 10. But the actual model, Honda Masanobu (本多正信), was indeed an opportunist in his own right, who became the first and foremost chief lieutenant of the Edo Shogunate and served two generations of Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川家康) and Tokugawa Hidetada (徳川秀忠).
However, perhaps taking into account the feelings of viewers who would not tolerate a traitor, Toranaga ordered him to commit seppuku in this drama, and in the form of Toranaga acting as intercessor. This was indeed an honourable seppuku and a very generous treatment.ところが、裏切り者を許さない視聴者の心情を考慮したのだろうか、このドラマで虎永は彼に切腹を命じた、しかも、虎永が介錯を務める形で。これはまさに名誉のタヒであり、かなりの厚遇であった。
In the first place, seppuku was an act of self-immolation in which a samurai committed seppuku himself in order to avoid the disgrace of having his head cut off and exposed on the battlefield. In the dorama, a number of gaijin - barbarians were shown on screen with their heads exposed.そもそも、切腹とは、戦場で侍が首を切り取られて晒し首になる不名誉を回避するために、自らが割腹する自害行為であった。劇中でも、何人もの外人‐蛮人の首が晒されている画面が映っていた。
I have read the book and the original 1980 miniseries. Although Fuji ( Fujiko in the book) died in the novel. She never died in the 1980 miniseries nor she became a nun. I think she changed her mind and later became Anjin-san's wife. She was becoming a Nun more so for her husband and son. Not just for Mariko-san. However Blackthorne didn't want her to leave him. So I think he wanted to show her a sailor's funeral. In which is believed by sailors that a person's soul and spirit will be around forever. By showing her this and together they buried her family and Mariko-san. She later decided to stay as his consort and perhaps later his wife. Because of this act. They moved on and became a couple. As for Toda Buntaro, he lost not only his wife but his father. So besides his son. He acknowledges Blackthorne as family. Great review. ❤.
This ending might actually be worse than GOT ending. At least GOT gave us an ending even if we didn't like it, If I could describe this show in one sentence: All build up no pay off. Doesn't matter if it's based on historical events or people already know how the battle goes it still would've been nice to see what happens or the aftermath of it. It's like making a show about the Titanic and never showing how it sank.
Underwhelming ending. 9 episodes of oncoming war build up just to end with toranaga standing at the wilderness, this and the newly released true detective have an underwhelming ending
Agreed, feels like it should be at least 1 more episode to conclude everything
The real finale was ep 9, this was basically just the epilogue...
it was like winter is coming in
GOT.
I can't believe this is how the book ends like man all we needed was like a 11 or 12 episode season and it would've been perfect. I can't help but feel a little unsatisfied with the ending, when does Blackthorne go back to England? Does Toranaga become Shogun or protector of the heir? No final battle, which has been built up all season and man all i wanted since episode one was to see Blackthorne captaining a ship not once did we get to see some proper naval warfare.
Still a great show but man it could of had a better ending.
He doesn't go back to England. That "old man Blackthorne" was a potential future, a dream (as seen in the title of the episode). In the dream you can see him holding Mariko's cross. But we can see that he threw that cross in the lake.
He let go of that potential future. They also stop showing it after he sees that future while he is holding the wakizashi to his heart and says "F*ck it". That's when that potential future was removed.
@@MustardSkaven The show still could have handled the ending a bit better. After reading up the booking ending and the actual real life events of these characters i am fine with this ending but without using google i'd still be left unsatisfied, which i imagine a lot of people won't.
Also i understood the letting go of the potential future but i didn't take that 0% chance he'd ever go back to England.
Agreed. The show was a 10/10 for me but now it’s dipped to a 7/10 with the ending.
There’s way too much crescendo in each episode for a very clumsy ending.
Every character is talking about the impending battle and yet we the audience didn’t get to see any of it…
Literally 10/10 ending, such a phenomenal ending. Made me feel every emotion joy, sadness, hope, etc. I'm kinda sad that the show bids farewell. Hands down best show of the year and maybe even one of the best shows ever.
Not everything has to be bang bang action..like some kind of action fast food consumption. This story had plenty of drama that was more than superficial adrenaline rush. A complete battle with own ego and need for control over life and death. The surrender of one’s own ambition to outsmart god. Toranaga said, I don’t control the wind, I only read it. (Study it as it was translated in English)
Disappointed with last episode
wdym bro it was poetic
@@yoragamihatsu8057it was underwhelming. Most overrated show this does not deserve such high ratings
man it’s interesting that still after watching 9 great episodes there were people who expected a typical Hollywood one trick pony big bang war and a kiss ending😂
I loved the ending. We got a glimpse of what would happen at the final battle. More is conveyed by eye contact and gestures by the actors in this ending than having it all spelled out. What an excellent series!
Anticlimax and missed the mark, they should have explained via flashback, mine clips how he became Shogun how he won the war and united the whole of Japan
In actual history, the Battle of Sekigahara alone becomes a drama. After that, Toranaga fights the ``Ochiba'' (Yodo-dono) at the winter and summer camps in Osaka. In order for the family to survive, the family is divided into enemies and allies, and that alone becomes a drama.
What was that??? Omggg 10/10 but I wish a season 2 battle scenes, more action more drama, new Mariko or bring her from the dead hahjaha
Disappointing ending.
I expected a final battle
@@DaDragonSlayer007 Same bruhh I've been waiting for weeks just to see a glimpse.
@@NegaTheKoreanBastard. yea. Dissappointed show.
An epic final battle was all we needed
@syd5306 exactly, they might show the letter at the end but at least anjin helping toronaga in sea and Toronaga army facing enemies in a battle.
All saying dissapointing endig (like yabushige want every thing but got nothing in the end) but i think its a beautiful endig in a own way of Philosophy
Agreed. I loved it.
You are right!
With the budget they get, can't they have a proper episode for the Battle of Sekigahara? This is so underwhelming.
Toranaga says the battle is over before a sword is drawn so whats the point of an episode? I think its done perfectly
This means you were a peasant after all, and still didn't understand the trickster Toranaga himself. You'll learn as age comes.
@@DanteHellDrivewrong you dont know the real story do u, they ruined it and a real battle did happen, 2 in fact. Stop pretending u r wise.
Mimimimi
It happened in the background. None of us were interested to see the war, the show was always about the politics and relationship. It doesnt have to be 1:1 for a book to a show. And, brohter if youre still thiraty for a war go simulate it in any online war simulator game. @WhiteBoyNick1
Mindless action movies of Hollywood, have ruined some many..all so can think of is just bloodshed..because writing is so weak. This ending was so much more.
What do you mean? There’s lots of bloodshed throughout the whole movie.
Why have so much climax throughout each episode to leave it with a stinker finally?
It’s not Hollywood, it’s basic writing…promise your audience with a battle that the characters and the trailers have been building up to…
No, To have a buildup all these weeks for a underwhelming ending is what weak writing is lol
Just in case you do a video on a future Japanese show
The R sound does not exist in Japanese. L not R.
Nor does the "a" sound as in apple.
samurai: "sah moo lai"
Yabushige: "Yah boo shee geh"
katana: "kah tah nah"
Mariko "Mah Lee Koh"
ramen: "lah men"
Don't blame the Japanese. The Romanization system was created by an American.
I hope they'll make a subsequent movie of the Battle of Sekigahara. For those who loved the mind games, deception, and strategies, I'd recommend watching Sanada Maru (2016) 50 episodes full of it and based on actual historical characters and events.
But there was no battle in the show's story. After Heir's army didn't show up the rest turned against Ishido, that much is told in the last episode.
I know this is based on historical events , but how can he know its in Sekigihara? also Lady Ochiba suddenly has a change of heart knowing that Toranaga is the one why his father is dead, She must know Toranaga wanted to be Shogun knowing that she and his son is gonna get killed. Lady Ochiba in this verion practically is in control and 101% can defeat Toranaga , it doesnt make any sense, they tried to be different from the novel and the 1980 version. and they choose that?
they couldve made Toranaga and the Portuguese made an alliance via Lady Mariko or Lady Mariko's death making the 2 regents switch side
She was manipulated by marikoa as she came to like her and is saddened by her death. Of course this was toronagas ploy to weaken her
Spies. Toranaga knew that Ishido was planning to bring his army into a defensive position in Sekigahara. Tornaga also knew that the other regents would oppose Ishido.
I think Lady Ochiba and Lady Mariko were good friends, though. Of course, Toranaga knew that Mariko's death would weaken her, which is what happened. She realized that Ishido, with the help of Yabushige, was some kind responsible for Mariko's death and that Ishido was simply using Lady Ochiba to gain power. Ishido didn't even care that Mariko died - see the scene where the council decides to go to war. Lady Ochiba wanted to mourn - Ishido didn't care. Logically, she cannot rule Japan alone or with the help of the child, so she assured Toranaga that the regent's army would not intervene in the battle against him.

@@zeeunveil1324 I am sorry, but that's just silly writing.
Great series with got ending, I was waiting for an epic battle and death to the regents…
thats ending is very simple and make me not happy, i need more episode from this epic story.
Anyone question for the next season, or for sekigahara battle? This series was ended and like the ending by this season toranaga said, me and ishido regen will meet on sekigahara?, ishido have all army from all regen, but his wife abandoned ishido and ishido will not have enough terms to declare his clean to star war with toranaga, and if U guys want to know what happen in sekigahara war to toranaga and ishido army, U can see the movie "sekigahara 2017" but toranaga doest not exist, because toranaga its a fantasy name the real name of firs shogun on that story is Tokugawa Leyasu(toranaga) and ishida matsunari as ishido, and yeah toranaga defeat ishido and become shogun for long time, hope my coment help U all
I assume the episode title was Aijin’s dream of dying as an old man in England
But nothing was truthful of that entire short scene
The Art of war by Sun Tzu
"to win without a fighting"
underwhelming ending..its got all over again
It's not as bad as GoT, lol.
GoT's second half was all downhill. 4 seasons going down in quality drastically with a horrific final season.
With Shogun, the quality was great throughout all episodes. We just didn't get to see a battle we were expecting to see.
All that build up for nothing I definitely got tricked
Yep and so many people got tricked so badly that they praise this show so highly even still 😂 so overrated and undeserving of its high ratings
@@Ghost-kn9bd I really expected a well ending with a war not toronaga tricking everyone 😭
I know some comments are disappointment of the ending, but I think that was the point really Since the book also doesn’t feature the battle of Semigahara Either. So I accepted the ending the way it is
Eh show kind of came and went. For all the hype...it was a bit meandering. I get the point of the ending, just never seemed to be a proper climax it mehvd on the way out for sure.
I understand everyone wanting to also see some real cool stuff like a great big battle, but at the same time...
Victory was already secured after episode 9. Mariko basically 1-shotted Ishido, ez clap. 😅
What a life in feudal days ..you live and you die...head choppings and committing your own death. Horrible and fearful living in that world.
A little disappointed damm
the entire season was a tease of a battle never fought, yeah yeah, mariko/crimson sky whatever ..... 10 episodes of moody beautiful ultimately frustrating and unsatisfying bllshyt
My thoughts exactly. I didn't think it'd end with a large battle but I still expected more than what we got.
Ha ha ha, it was very clear last chapter was the series climax, this is just and epilogue since it was clear that once the hostages fled, defeat was certain for Ishido
That's literally how the book goes lol. maybe you should watch Michael bay films if all you care for is the action.
They should have made it a two part ep10
@@calebbriggs7194 i care for story too, but needs action as well!
We all know this show was never about the big battles and should expect the absence of the fighting scenery !!! Me personally i enjoyed each and every single episode from start to end and i respect the whole approach from this show to the specific era of Japan !!! I loved this although i wish we had more content i give the show 10/10 💪😎🙏☦️🇬🇷
John Blackthorne started off as a "Stranger in a Strange Land" to... The opposite of that.
Can someone explain why the lady ochiba flipped in the end? I mean it makes no sense since she hated toranaga so much for no reason
Please end it with final battle of the death it’s so much to handle with all these space to fill.
I love the story and the characters but wow am I disappointed.
I’m a sucker for violence in movies/shows and I felt like this show had the violence I needed.
The ending however was very anti climatic and I felt all it needed was the crescendo that it was building. A 5 minute monologue and quick shots of a battlefield wasn’t enough for me especially with the constant build up of “we’re taking over Osaka”.
Hopefully they make a few more episodes with a bigger budget focusing more on the epilogue
is it the last episode of the season or will there be a episode 11 ?
A lot of people are of the same mind. Beautiful artistic ending? Sure. Blue balls ending and entirely overwhelming? Hell yeah. I had to check how much of the episode was left and started thinking halfway through “wait-is this it?” 9 episodes of build up with less than satisfying ending
I knew this would happen!!!
hegelian dialectec,
thesis is toranaga
anti thesis is ishido
synthesis is the war which was never shown lol
I love everything about this show but the finale is just a new taste for me perhaps thats why i did not like it. after all this conflict that we watched, we as audience NEED a RESOLUTION, not a glimpse of the future lol maybe im just mad but ok
Is the series ended? Pls let me know 😢
Feels like it should be one more episode Lol it just ends too abrupt
Considering how people felt about this show, and how the show has already succeeded from the initial 5 episodes, we can only hope that the producers did trick us all and create a second season. But then again, I'm just inhaling copium while typing this.
This show is a masterpiece….10’s across the board. The ending without a blood thirsty battle. ( which is so pat) is such a master stroke.
I felt it needed another episode.
iirc the book did end like this. just lots of explaining of what was to come
The real story he helped tokunaga win 2 battles in real life. And stayed in Japan. But idk if that's the book or the actual story the book is just based off.
Perfect ending. Words speak for themselves.
If you want epic samurai battles wait until Ghost of Tsushima movie comes out.
Was waiting for anjin to learn how to swing that ish...go back with army in tow for a big lord of the rings type battle.....only to be disappointed with some deep meaning of life type ish😂
Honestly super disappointing, I expected something impressive and flawless
I missed Kiku😢
Utah Jazz da best
I thought it was perfect...
It is, this is jdrama not, Samurai x movie
@penegakkeadilanpembasmikej5022 exactly I dunno why people went into it expecting soooooo much action wars and fighting. It was beautiful and they should appreciate it for what it is. They lack intelligence and don't appreciate beauty and just want to see senseless violence and killing. That's not what this was about. I love japanese culture and I studied this era ages ago and I was sooooooo excited they brought it to life and executed it so perfectly.
Bravo! Anna Sawai deserves every single award that exists.
I watched the 1980 version so for me its kinda spoiled. and in some aspect the 1980 version is better as some scenes are watered down in the 2024 version.
-Lady Mariko asked father Alvito to be friends with John which implied they will as Anjin is marooned in Japan.
-Toranaga revealed only to viewers He dont want John to leave Japan as he gonna taught him a lot.
-John reunion with his crew is more happier and the death of his last crew was a bit dramatic the realization of hopelessness of not going home, it was a very good acting to be honest.
-Toranaga never revealed to anyone his masterplan everyone was oblivious.
and so many great scenes was not included as I said the 2024 version is watered down.
Yabisihe lives in LA, so if you see him , say hi to him
Cant believe it all over now damn and there wont be season 2 its all over god damn it
It was amazing, but I just wish we got to see everything unfold from the battle and what comes afterwards although we were already told by toranaga. Just finished the episode and idk how I feel about toranaga pretty much spoiling what happens lmao. It was an amazing series though, don't get me wrong, but now I am bothered by that spoilage lmao.
I called it. With the few skirmishes in between, there was no way they could crank out a battle even though we deserved one. At least we had some taste of combat through out the series. I don’t know why they could not have just made this a 12 episode series, rather than just 10 episodes. It’s baffling honestly.
@@Pluralboard Had to be a budget thing most likely.
what can i say , felt odd from starting but the ending wow so worst , whats the point of a story if its a fake story , only to see some actions
Plz explain what will happen if hier army isnt on the battlefield why would ishido loose why cant he just attack tornama
We Japanese know the outcome of the Battle of Sekigahara in the course of compulsory education.
If they do anything else with this property, i think a movie would do just fine to please the people who wanted war
I'd prefer a prequel. Cause this is pretty much the end of the Sengoku Jidai. Not too much war left.
Disappointing ending. Rather sad that the series ended with a whimper.
I really hope we get 12 episodes at least, I want to see Anjin-dono as a full fledged samurai, embracing his new fate and a years after with his grandchildren but in Japan, a mirror of the scene with his grandchildren in England. I would asume that instead of an old, frail blind man, the Blackthorne or at that point Anjin, would be more healthy looking
I think show will totally split from books and real life events. They establish a base, now they can create own plot.
There's unlikely to be another season because the source material has been used up. The last episode ends where the book does.
My guess is that if there's any further expansion will depend heavily on Michaela Clavell as I believe she exercises creative control over her father's work which she's very protective of.
Much like others, im not gonna act like the e ding was abstract or anywhere near what we deserved. Im disappointed but it was still a phenomenal series.
Why would anyone trust Ochiba
For geniuses loves art, poertry and politics the ending is Brilliant and Beautiful.
For mainstream watchers who wants brutal green screens, the ending is bullshit
I'd say I'm included in the mainstream watchers, and the ending is perfect.
It's not about green screens or action. A lot of people wanted the satisfaction of seeing Ishido's defeat, rather than "He'll be defeated, trust me, bro"."
I am satisfied with the ending, they kept the quality high. But I would be lying if I said I didn't expect to see Ishido's defeat and suffer the consequences of his actions.
It's called build up and pay off. There wasn't any pay off. Not even a scene to help us see Ishido dies. We are all human beings. Our emotions have been strung along and that emotion has been left hanging. That is what is meant by disappointment.
I called it at episode 7 there wouldnt be any battle 😂😂 was the episode all were made clear for any episode coming, 10th or 100th would be same
Does Fuji become a Christian or a Buddhist nun?

She speaks of a convent, so I'd say Christian.
Thankful this is over. Started great, ended on a flop.
Where to watch??
All that just for talking no battle 0/10
yeah no this was a shit ending
I expected to see a lot of blood. I expected to see the last scene from the last samurai or Tom Cruise and Kasa Moto just fuck everybody up they didn't even get revenge for Maria. I didn't know this was gonna be a soap opera. I am very disappointed.
Did they even read the book???? Why they just make their own story! That would be far better! It´s a such a worse adapation!

Such a shit show. I don't understand the lack of proper action. This should have been full of action. Why's one old damned Toranaga man hiding and sending people to their death? Ridiculous ending. No action, just pointless overrated tricks. I don't see the fuss about this show
You've missed the point. The story is about the politics of feudal Japan and how an outsider is absorbed into it. James Clavell's novel was intended to offer westerners some insight into the oriental mindset, not be a screenplay for a Jackie Chan movie.
You missed the whole point of the show. The show wasn't a turn your brain off and enjoy the slicing and dicing lol
