Correct, this bullet was sadly discontinued by Hornady. This was one of my favorite bullets of all time for 500 s&w bear protection. I load them over near maximum charges of CFE BLK. I stashed away hundreds of these years ago once I realized they were being discontinued. Hornady if you're listening please bring this bullet back into production.
@@rangetime6779 lol. At that velocity it would be. I could probably push another 100-150fps out of it if I worked the ladders up. But I only have 2 of them left and Hornady has discontinued production of this bullet. 😢
@@robertburgard8588 Hornady has discontinued its production.😢 I’m watching the reloading buy/sell/trade forums hoping to catch some left from a cleanup or estate sale.
Hey Matt. I love watching your videos. I live part time in Spain and they keep me sane! I have shared you link with several people here and they are going to subscribe and watch. I looked and haven't seen a video yet on the 300 Hammer. Any plans to do a series on it? Looks like an interesting cartridge. Keep up the great content! Go Big Blue!
@@gregorybarton169 Thanks for sharing my channel! .300 Hammer isn’t totally out of the question but it would be a ways down the road. I’m working through calibers I already have and already reload for first, then I’ll start looking at adding new calibers. I’d be starting from scratch, adding rifle, dies, and components so adding a new calibers would be quite the investment. 😉
Expansion is great and the penetration considering the size of the expansion is also very good. I am a little surprised that the velocity. I thought it would be closer to 1500+ fps
@@frankbrowning328 I’ve not decided any load ladders to push it up. It may have that much headroom. But they don’t make these anymore and they aren’t cheap. 😉
Nice big wide flat nose of soft lead gives great expansion based on lower velocities. Designed for this velocity and performs as such. The cost of bullets is completely out of control no wonder people don’t shoot much anymore. I have cast WFN with soft noses that get very similar performance in my 480 Ruger. Love the tests keep them coming. Its interesting people think you need great speed for good performance but thats not always the case. Why beat yourself up with recoil ……😂
@@michaelrocole7174 True. Unfortunately, this bullet was discontinued by Hornady. I can’t find it anywhere. Been scouting the internet and Ammo-Seek but no luck. I have a total of 7 left. 😢
They're on midwayusa right now but a bit more expensive now days. And jacketed soft points are an age old design that works great especially in big bores. I'd be surprised if they didn't work very well. Does it strain the extractor to close it over the rims? I know on some weapons it can bend the extractor to do that often. I had to replace the one on my 1911 doing this with test rounds when I first started reloading for it.
Great video 👍

If you're looking for some requests, I would really love to see what the Speer 350 Deep Curl JSP does in gel. Also the Sierra 400 JSP.
@@BoostFabLee Agreed!! They need to bring them back….
Good video.
The power is about like the 50-70. Good stuff.

@@randalljeffs7272 Thanks! I’m still figuring some of it out but I think my general format is getting pretty close. 😉
Now that's a thumper load. Surprised it expanded at those lower velocities. I'm sure the trajectory is like a rainbow.

Sadly I believe hornady is discontinuing that 500 grain bullet.
I think you're correct, as I've been trying to track this bullet down for my 500 S&W for about 2 years now, and can't locate it anywhere.

@ speer made some flat points at one time as well. Not sure about 50 cal but for the 480 Ruger. I will keep my eye out for you for any of the Hornady

No. Closing over the rim works just like every other AR caliber.
