Debate the morality of the Fifth Commandment? No. Tattooes are a form of bodily mutilation, and that's a sin. There can be no debate. (Unless for some reason they are used to identify a body for some specific purpose, such as soldiers in combat, for when they are killed... then again, that's pretty discreet.) Otherwise, they are immoral. (And ugly, in all cases, especially for women)

I really like this video after minute 5:22 when Matt says, "I feel like tattoos are like your child's names. You never want to admit that it was a mistake."
    Lesnefsky: "Oh wow."
I would just like to add, for any youth considering becoming the next illustrated man or woman, the following; Lesnefsky used the word "permanent" more than a few times. Now that's the big problem. Getting tattoos is like seeing a really awesome shirt in a really cool store. Then buying it, wearing it, and having to wear it for an entire month, unable to take it off night or day. That month turns into a year and that year turns into 50 years. Very quickly you realize that you have surrendered a very significant part of your free will. You chose, of your own free will, to put on the awesome shirt, but now you cannot choose to take it off. Ever.

Bodily mutilation is a sin against the 5th commandment. Getting a tattoo is certainly, according to (traditional) Catholic moral teaching, a form of that. By the same logic, an untattooed body is like buying a Million Dollar House and hanging no art inside it, never painting it, not even putting furniture in it. i have a few concerns about the tattoos. I've heard an exorcist saying that some of the inks are devoted to demons. the tattoo artist propably doesn't know that when they are buying the ink but it's still possible and as it turns out it's not that rare. what's more aren't tattoos a form of cultivating pagan traditions? I mean lots of native tribes practice tattoo art as form of their religious rituals and ect. i by no means want to judge you guys but i think it would be interesting to bring up the moral aspect of tattooing in one of the podcast, the Church's teaching on that matter. God bless you ❤

Very well said. I think tattoos can be good if they are meaningful but we have to think about what we are permanently marking our body with. A tattoo of a money bag might not be the best idea since it is marking us for the world rather than give glory to God. If one is to get a tattoo, plenty of time and thought needs to go into it so that it isn't some last minute thing.

It is interesting to note that, for example, it is an extremely old tradition among Coptic Christians to receive tattoos of a cross on the wrist (I have heard of some on the forehead perhaps?) as a way of showing their faith. I say that to say, it isn’t simply pagan tradition!

I think that specifically what you're talking about could be henna. Most people see Henna as fine because it isn't permanent, but it comes specifically from a fertility goddess ritual thing. I don't know if any other tattoo inks now in use are linked to stuff like that. Regardless, I don't personally believe that people should get tattoos except in grave cases. I think that Thomas Aquinas makes them only ok if it is something needed to identify a soldier or prisoner etc. But I'm not sure

If you look up the word "Tattoo" in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, you wont find it. Because Tattoos are not discussed in the Catechism. Or in any Encyclical or Magisterial Church Document. This "issue" is one Mother Church feels confidant that the faithful can choose and decide for themselves. So for any of you claiming, "The Tradition of the Church states..." no it does not. Just stop it.
Tattoos are not evil, otherwise they would be stated as such. They arent made with "Demonic ink" or used to make the Temple of God, "Dirty". They are artistic expression, plain and simple. Or, are you all against Art too? Do you support the smashing of Holy Icons too?
If we arent meant to adorn or decorate our bodies, then ban makeup too. And hair products. No nice clothing either, must not distract people from their pursuit of God's Grace. Jewlery is out too, so much for wedding rings (Promise rings too!). No watches either. And definately no smoking of any kind- Cigs, Cigars, pipes, e-cigs, etc.- now THOSE things do so, so much more harm to the body than tattoos ever could.
So unless you plan on setting the example of a Tattooless, Cosmetic-less, plain clothing wearing Catholic who owns no jewlery, consumes no tobacco products and has no personality outside being Catholic, then your arguments are void.

What I'm never hearing addressed in all these tatoo videos from Catholic talking heads: Is the Spirit of God really leading people to get tattoos? Or is this a "work of the flesh", an inclination of our sensate appetites that are at war with The Spirit? Interesting that Bob's "in" to "the club" was getting his skin marked/engraved in honor/remembrance of the dead, something that sounds very similar to something that is forbidden in scripture, AND, that he seems pretty ok not fighting his flesh inclination in this are. Throw in a nonchalant "doodle on The Temple" and it's really an appropriate question to ask what is Bob's Interior Life practice and how well does he really Know and Experience Communion with the Indwelling Presence of The Most Blessed Trinity. Whoof. Catholics getting tattoos and loving it. Whoof.
