I was a Security Policeman in the Air Force. Knowing our equipment to the best of our ability was extremely important. Our weapons, ammo, vehicles, etc. We were often quizzed on our posts, and the equipment that was assigned to us during the duty day. Malloy rapidly shooting out the details of the car off the top of his head sounds very familiar to me.

I agree it's up there as an iconic scene, of which this series had several. One scene I remember in particular is I think in season 6 episode 17, "Taking it Easy". While Reed is working desk duty, Malloy is assigned a rookie cop. While on patrol, Malloy asks the rookie, "Where are we?"
The young cop responds that he didn't know, to which Malloy tells him to always know where you are and reminding him to make it a point to observe street signs, saying something like "if you have an emergency, you don't have time to run to the corner to check where you are." I haven't forgotten this.

Between July 2018 and January 2020, I hiked across the USA from Florida to Santa Monica, California. I didn't hitchhike, I walked. It took 18 months.
In January, before all of the pandemic stuff unfolded, I was having coffee in a Starbuck's in Los Angeles. I had the pleasure of sitting next to two Los Angeles police officers. We chatted about a lot of things, the homeless problem, etc.
In the course of talking to them I mentioned Adam-12. I was 60 years old, they appeared to be around 30.
They didn't know what Adam-12 was, never heard of it!!!!
I was terribly amused at this.
I had my laptop open so I pulled up some clips.
These two guys were laughing so loud it drew looks from all over the shop.
I told them I couldn't believe they didn't make Adam-12 mandatory viewing when they joined.
    Life is so funny.

Most powerful scene in my opinion, the last episode, also Reed's last day as he left the LAPD to work with troubled children on all levels. Last scene: Malloy is part of Reed's called in backup, and Reed brings out a boy, about 14 years old, a child prostitute. The look on Malloy's face was one of half sorrow as he knew how much Reed loved children, and pride as he raised an awesome police officer.

As a little kid in grade school I grew up with Adam 12 when it originally aired. Dragnet, Adam-12 and Emergency really peaked my attention. I had lots of bicycle chases being Adam-12. Today 54 years after the original airing of the show there are 2 episodes that sticks in my mind. The first was where a woman kept hearing strange noises from her neighbors garage. They call in Adam 12 and when they get to the garage they find a guy had his Mustang jacked up working underneath it with a bumper jack and the car fell on him pinning him under the tire. So he was screaming for help for quite a long time. The second episode I have always remembered was the one where Malloy and Reed were chasing some bad guys through like a canyon area. Reed and Malloy for whatever reason I don't remember got separated and Malloy was chasing the bad guys alone in the cop car at a high rate of speed. He ended up crashing the police car over an embankment and was really busted up. Since he is missing Reed talks the Captain into letting him search in another police car in the area Malloy went missing. The radio in Malloys car had a busted mic from the crash but he was able to short a couple of wires together and make a morse code type static. Reed picks up on the static and through "one for yes" and "two for no" Reed finds Malloy. You talking about Reed asking to drive in the pilot episode reminded me of when he did get to drive and save the day.

    Rick: Help with police terminology:
Code One-regular, no lights or sirens.
    Code Two-Lights, but no siren
    Code Three-Lights and siren
In Los Angeles-Code 415 means the disturbance, but this also references the state code, so, 415 in the California Code of Criminal Procedure, 415 is the statute number. Now, in other cities and jurisdictions, the disturbance will be a 10 code (i.e. 10-14) or a different code (i.e. Signal five). At a PD I worked for, 10-14 was a domestic disturbance (husband/wife) and signal five was an out and out fist fight.
How the dispatcher references the car when she says "One Adam Twelve" One is the shift (day shift 6-2 or 7-3), Adam is the district (usually, Adam is downtown) and 12 is the 12th car in Adam district.

Interesting, because in season 2 episode 1, titled "Exactly 100 Yards", Reed is explaining to a group of schoolchildren that "Code 1 means 'acknowledge a call', Code 4 means 'no further help needed', and so on." Later in this scene we learn that in the case of 1-Adam-12, the one means the Central District, Adam refers to a two-man unit, and the twelve is the patrol sector within the division.
I think I also remember hearing that sometime within the last several years, the LAPD has gone to plain English and no longer uses the code system. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @The_Dudester
      @The_Dudester ปีที่แล้ว

@@aceckrot Remember, this is an actor, not a cop explaining what "One Adam Twelve" meant, and not a cop. I learned the breakdown when I was military police and I would do ride alongs with the local PD. That PD had five districts (Adam to Edward) and it was a medium sized town with 1 to 3 cars per district.
I also worked for a small town PD where there was 21 cops and no district. Your number was based on your seniority. Finally, I also worked for a somewhat big city. 200 to 203 was assistant chiefs, 204 to 209 was districts, 211 and 212 were either north or south rovers, 214-218 was traffic control and 219 was the training officer. 220 to 230 were additional officers assigned to the districts to supplement the district assigned officer (if a particular district was hot, all of the additional officers would be assigned to that one district).

I watched Adam-12 in high school. I had thought about being a police officer and watching the show gave me the incentive to do so. I was hired as a dispatcher in 1978 and promoted to police officer in 1979. We didn't have videos to train by back then, just police academy classes. Since Jack Webb was known to write and direct his shows (Dragnet, Adam-12, Emergency) based on real police policies and training, scenes of these shows were shown at our training. I am in my 44th year as a police officer and though our training has really changed, watching Adam-12 brings back memories of how it was back then. Thanks for keeping the history alive. There was an episode that I’ve only seen once (when it first aired), but have never seen it again, nor heard about it… even searching in the comments here- nobody has mentioned it… the whole episode revolved around Malloy after his patrol car somehow rolled down an embankment and he was seriously hurt. Reed was actually back at the office trying to get hold of him, and became suspicious, and eventually a search party sent out to find Malloy. But I remember as a kid watching that particular episode, it was very intense- not like the other shows. All very serious. But of course it all ended on a good note. Anyone remember that?

Rick-working in EMS and being in the streets and also working in 911 dispatch, where I worked, we used the 10 codes such as 10-4, 10-97, 10-8 etc. You get the idea. All the police, sheriff, highway patrol, everyone in this area operated on that system. It is really cool to hear other systems being talked about. I thought everyone in the US used the standard 10 code! News to me ❤😂

      @saberridge6867 ปีที่แล้ว +1

While there a variety of radio codes used in different localities, the reason for the codes is for secrecy, but rather for easier communication. The use of 10 codes came shortly after radio became a standard item in police cars. The reason was the early AM radios had a lot of static and often unreliable transmission, so it was found that a quick standard code number could relay a lot of information. For example in the show when they say they are code 6 it replaces a whole sentence that would be something like The location is secure, no help needed. For example in my town, you might hear Car 95 - going 23 at 123 main street. It means we're stopping at 123 main st for lunch. HQ gets their status quick and easy.

If they don't cover that at the police academy, what do they cover? Another one that happens on many tv shows is where a conversation is delayed for when they reach their destination. You know they would have already had that conversation on the trip.

One of the best episodes was when Malloy finally allowed Reed to drive the Patrol car. Some of the best stuff in Adam12 is often the chit chat between Malloy and Reed which has to do with what they are doing when not being cops. One negative for me is Malloy's tone of voice and delivery of his lines in this episode (I think the intent was to show the chip on his shoulder after his former partner was killed) was so different than the rest of the series, I found it annoying. He was a different Malloy in the pilot for sure, but it was completely understandable given the circumstance of his planned retirement from a job he obviously loved and excelled at, but had taken an emotional toll. Reed has the opportunity to demonstrate the character, bravery and skill that will make him a great cop, and that turns Malloy around. It wasn't particularly realistic for all of what happened to occur on Reed's very first day, but it is entertainment and it served to bring Malloy back to his own greatness instantly and established their brotherhood from day one until the final day 6 or 7 years later. What a hall of fame show it turned out to be with two television hall of fame protagonists.

I handed them back, telling him. "You're driving." "You want ME to drive?" he replied. With what I now see to be that Malloy sarcasm, I said, "You CAN drive, can't you?" Maloy comments, one more pass in the area and we will report back to the station for end of shift. As the car is driving down a quiet street of homes BAM! shots fired with a bullet threw the windshield. Adam 12 seen so often coming to the aid of others is the one in need......Malow on the radio "Adam 12 at (street name) shots fired OFFICERS NEED HELP!" The realism of an officer going from total boredom to fighting for their lives in a few seconds. The viewer also sucked into the scene from boredom to high action........ well played by the great Jack Webb.

Reed and Malloy would be considered bleeding heart liberals today. Wells would have ended up police commissioner. I saw the episode "Requiem for a Pig", and it was mesmerizing.

What the heck happened to the LAPD? They used to be considered the best. The FBI sometimes sent agents to their training.

The first episode is interesting. It seems like Martin Milner is doing his best Joe Friday impression, especially when he explains the role of the police car to Reed.

I have never seen this show since watching reruns in the early 70s. There was one episode where Malloy buys a day old newspaper from a kid selling them on the street.
We only had a B&W television then, so I didn't know this show was in color.
Your videos make me want to go back and watch a lot of these classics.

Close. It was Reed who buys the day old paper, for which he is tormented by Wells. "Man Between" is the name of the episode.

I saw that first episode as a young teenager. I grew up watching Martin Milner as Tod Styles on "Route 66", so I couldn't wait to see him on "Adam-12". It seemed so out of character when he delivered that monologue at a 'Jack Webb' pace... but then, I just cracked up when Reed asked if he should drive and Malloy just stared at him.

  • @bewarethedecks

Both Malloy and Reed appeared as partner police officers on Dragnet before Adam-12 hit the air, so to see them starting from scratch as a new team feels a bit unusual.
    A fun fact.
In the opening sequence during the first three seasons, you see Adam-12 driving along a street. In the background are two church towers. The tower on the right is the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles. The tower on the left is the Precious Blood Church in Los Angeles.
Imagine being a parishioner of either church and seeing your respective church's tower as it appeared some 50+ years ago. 🙂

Another reason Malloy drove is that Reed was fast on his feet. He could jump out and chase the suspect down.

A great scene for the pilot show of the series. And probably the best scene in that episode. It shows the interaction between the new guy on his first day and the senior officer, or Field Training Officer, FTO, these days. And you never, never, let a rookie drive the car on his first day period!

Kent McCord was in a few "Dragnet" episodes before "Adam 12". 1 or two times as Reed. Sea. 10/Epi. 13, "The Phony Police Racket". Milner and McCord were in one episode of "Dragnet". Along with William Boyette, in the pilot for "Emergency" . Wearing LAPD uniforms, Milner and McCord were in a "Rowan & Martin's Laugh In" episode. Later, they were a movie called "Nashville Beat". Different names. McCord was LAPD. Milner played his former LAPD partner and on the Nashville Force.
0:37)Art Gilmore was the voice on "Highway Patrol" William Boyette was a patrolman.
1:27)Code Two, the lights are used.
4:21)Reed drove in one episode because Malloy's drivers license was expired.
