That engine sounds smooth and healthy. You can bet they put their best builder on that one and that all the specs were spot on and double checked. An old mentor of mine taught me that “Complacency Can Kill”. I have never forgotten that.
    Blue Skies.

As a nobody in the TH-cam comments section its nice to see someone doing it right.
No chute required, no glory wanted or views, just a guy getting back in the saddle (after getting the sh*t scared out of him) to do something he loves and sharing it with us. The anxiety for the first trip back up in the air must have been hard to press through and not that enjoyable. But you did it, and having to stop worrying about something out of your control and actually get back to enjoy the flying will be great. You are also showing the younger gen that are coming up that an engine out never has to end bad if you train for it.

I know this was all a year ago, but great job on the emergency landing when the engine self destructed. I'm glad that the shop made it right for you. They got off easy as they would have been a lot of trouble if the aircraft had been damaged, something on the ground had been damaged or their had been injuries. Compared to what could have been replacing an engine is cheap. Glad everything worked out and you are back in the air. 😀

Being an A&P, having overhauled this model engine for 50 years along with general maintenance on this model 210, you have a good plane. Not much chance of having two “bad” engines.
    Enjoy.
    Sweet model.

Great job. I was very impressed how you handled the engine out during takeoff. And I've been super impressed the way you have handled getting the airplane back in the air. It was great to see the engine shop completely stand behind their work. And it's great to see that beautiful bird back in the air. Enjoy your 210 and stay safe!

Worked on the 210 quite a bit, and he's a marvelous ship. The landing gear,, I always called
them hornet gear,, the way they hang just like the bee hornet. Amazing the suspension they give,
even during severe crosswind landings, one foot at a time touching while going sideways. Boy do they dance.
Being pretty fussy with wiring under the panel, Sure enough I redid his rats nest, and being upside down for hours while under deep into panel is not fun. Your hands come out all cat scratched to death from the hundreds of wire ties. But's it's always beautiful in the end.
    No stray wires anywhere.
I have to admit, I thought the engine spun a rod bearing,, as in too tight, if not certified by plastic
gauge to confirm clearance. It sure was a shame to see that much damage, and that engine new
with nothing on it has to be roughly 20K$, maybe much more now, when they came from Bolduc Engine supply. A small 4 cylinder was almost 9K$. Bare to the bone.
Well you certainly have a great ship now. You'll have close to 2000 hrs on him within a year.
    Cheers

I think the bad engine maybe had bad bearing clearance or maybe the bolts weren't torqued properly during assembly, the oil pressure was steadily coming down until it grenaded. Whatever the issue ended up being though, glad you landed it safely (almost better than this video haha) and the shop stood by their work replacing everything! Excellent videos! Enjoy your time flying sir

I am an automotive machinist by trade. I have no performed some machine work on aircraft engines a few times. Mainly dynamic balance tests on the engine rotating assembly.
Knowing these engines are air cooled and heavily relying on oil to keep the engine operating temperatures down, I would never advocate someone running contaminated engine oil.
Used oil coolers and lines? Never even in a car.
One other detail to keep in mind that will speak volumes on a shops abilities and knowledge is red shop tags. If you see someone wiping down internal engine parts with red shop rags you are in the wrong shop. While many people will claim they’ve used them a million times with no issues. One time is all it takes and I’ve seen the fibers from red shop rags completely plug up oil passages. It doesn’t take much.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Great news on the parachute & fire extinguisher! Did you remember to swap out the new engine for a "parts" engine and disconnect the empty wing fuel tanks and let the interior fuel selector switch dangle freely? Do you have enough of Uncle-Ernie's ashes to sprinkle on top of Mt Everest? Check! Awesome! 🤣🤣

Hey Edward, I'm from northern Germany/Rhauderfehn and found your channel because I'm very interested in documentaries like you do😀. I would be very happy if you continued this documentary journey with an open end....✊ you can really bring it across authentically and that inspires me👍👍, because many can't do it that way! it would also be a great thing for me if we could maybe get to know each other personally, because I think that you are a great guy by nature and really likeable.... 😉 in this sense I wish you many good flights with your 210 and of course always happy landings.....😉✊✊✊😀 many greetings from Germany/Rhauderfehn 🙋 Kuno Lühring

Edward...thank you for your great videos. Not sure how I found your initial video, but have followed this incident, and am very thankful for your survival!
I have always wanted to learn to fly. Having rudimentary flight knowledge from AFJROTC, I found myself in a Cessna 421, twin engine, low wing plane flying across the Grand Canyon. I wound up next to the pilot and somehow he let me fly for a few minutes. I 'bout shat myself, but held it all together.
Anyways, my obstacle to flying has always been my size. I truly appreciate you being a "person of size" as they call us these days, being a pilot. I will keep my dream of one day maybe flying, but for the time being, Southwest is my chauffeur!
    Fly safe brother!

It's good to see that the 310hp stuff works again, Ed. The high speed taxi test, and the full power static test you mentioned as well, is the best part of this video, which basically ensured safety of this test flight. Then the engine shop who took the mistake and fixed the problem, together with your courage to do it again, finally makes this happen - Bravo!
Here I want to ask for your permission to re-share this series (the failure, the analysis, and this one) to another site call "Bilibili" since youtube links are not available out there - those videos are quite technical, informational, educational and inspirational... May I? (oh sorry, with credit to your name for sure)
Thanks again, and keep safe, more videos pls.

As a private pilot who has suffered an engine-out, it's normal to feel a bit squirrely after such an experience. After all, it is an experience that puts our lives in danger. I was able to land on a closed runway within gliding distance about 30 miles from my normal field because my basic flight training included endless surprise power-offs (by my instructor) after which I had to glide down to within 100 feet of a suitable emergency landing field before climbing away. The lesson was to always have a suitable spot within gliding range, which required me to choose a flight path and sufficient altitude to land safely wherever I was. I was happy for that training because the day my prop stopped my first reaction was to head for the field I had already noted, just in case. Even so my blood pressure jumped!

My dad had to make a dead stick landing in a Piper Cub once in a cotton field. He got out, slammed the door and never flew again as a pilot.
I'm amazed that they are still using flat tappet cams and lifters after the success of roller cams in ground transportation. There is no break-in, no expensive zinc loaded oil requirements, much less friction and very efficient. At least they should offer a conversion kit as they do for cars.
Glad you are back in the air, mucho cahonies!

    • @v12alpine
      @v12alpine หลายเดือนก่อน

Flat tappet reliability with proper break in cannot be matched by roller cams. They are more efficient but it's another point of failure.

I gave really enjoyed your videos. I worked for and with my cousin for about 2 years a couple years ago, he had a nice farm and 13 rental properties, between the two, it made for some long days, and we talked alot, when he wasnt busy flying C-130s, for the national guard at time. I used to love hearing his stories and seeing his pictures, of all the places he had been, a few tours over seas, he had got to see and do alot flying. A few years ago he got offered a job in Arkansas actually teaching new pilots, how to fly C-130s, and went back to active duty, hopefully till he retires. But when he took the new job, he had to leave WV, and sell the farm. Im just glad we got the chance to get closer, more like brothers than just cousins. I have been lucky enough to fly a few times, when i was in Civil Air Patrol, as a teenager, and over the years, taking my kids, and renting a plane to ride around over the house, for a hour or two, is how much ive got to enjoy that kinda stuff. Your videos have brought back alot of memories, i am so glad you are able to tell it, that everything turned out good and safe, thanks for the break down, really good information, how you broke it all down, i sent your videos to my cousin, to watch, cant wait for his response. Best of luck out and up there, and again thanks.

You know, there's something about a big Continental at idle. I just love that sound! From everything I saw, it sounds and looks like you've got a good engine. Of course, you said it was a new or rebuilt engine, a zero-timed one? I would assume that's going to be pretty reliable.

Only thing I question is the high speed taxi which prolonged the ground time on a brand new rebuild. To avoid glazing the cylinders you want the aircraft on the ground for the shortest amount of time possible and then you want to climb it hard and make her work... once you glaze them it's almost impossible to get the rings to seat. Let us know how your oil consumption has been over the first 50 hours smoh.

This was before the AD on the circlips coming out? Great videos. Nice recovery after engine failure.

Engine sounds nice and strong. You have log a good amount of time as a test pilot. Hopefully u regain your confidence in the 210 again
