      If you ever want to know how culturally important rugby is in wales, there's a documentary called "we beat the all blacks", it's about an hour long though. One town against a country, that'll give you the truest reflection of life in Wales that you'll probably ever see. Happened in the 70's and we still go on about it!

    I’d bet on the Welsh to outsing anyone but their national anthem comes from so deep within, is so emotional, and in such an ancient and beautiful language, that I choke up whenever I hear it. If you can go to the rugby in Wales, go for this. The All Blacks have the haka but the Welsh have this. I’m not Welsh but I’m so proud to share an island with them.

      Being an Australian of Welsh and English Heritage i can understand the power of the Welsh voice in unison is like a 12th (football) or 16th (rugby) man.
      Unfortunately because the issue of a seperate English National Anthem has not been settled we have to adopt God Save the Queen. I would be in favour of dropping it in favour of Jerusalem or Land of Hope and glory.
      Its still better than the Australian National Anthem
      Advance Australia Fair is one of the blandest national anthems anyone could use.
      In the nearly 40 years since it became the official National Anthem (some people still dont know the words) its hardly a tune that lights the fires of passion in an athletes belly.

    • @cezjon1

      @breandanmaguire3335 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's true about the longbow. And the 'V' sign. Also, I believe there's some veracity in claims that the Welsh Dragon flag had its origins in the battle standards of the Sarmation cavalry who allegedly, supposedly, fought for the Romans in Britannia and may or may not be the origin of the legend of Arthur and Knights of the Holy Grail.

    • @vaudevillian7
      @vaudevillian7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@cezjon1 yes arguably it’s from the draco, and the Welsh have the closest historical ties to the Romano-British, explicitly at least (but the dragon in heraldry isn’t unique to Wales in the British isles) but the Welsh flag as it is - is the Tudor standard in appearance, after all Glyndwr’s was completely different

      @@vaudevillian7 My understanding is that the dragon is the dragon of Cadwaladr, King of Gwynedd from around 655 to 682 AD. It may well originate with the draco, although most of Cymru (Wales) is not good country for cavalry, who probably carried the draco standard. The Welsh flag does appear to derive from the Tudor standard. The Prince of Wales (three) feathers, as displayed on the other flag on the pitch, derive from The Black Prince (of Wales).

    ‘Y Ddraig Goch’ the red dragon story:
    A young boy (who some believe to be Merlin the magician) warned a man called Vortigern that the site he had in mind for his castle was directly above an underground lake, where two dragons lay sleeping.
    On digging the ground to start the castle's construction, Vortigern’s men found two dragons - one red, one white - fighting fiercely. After a real scuffle, the red dragon won.
    Some say that the red dragon represented Vortigern’s people, while Geoffrey of Monmouth saw it as a prophecy of the coming of King Arthur (funnily enough, the name of King Arthur's father - Uther Pendragon - translates into ‘Dragon’s Head').
    While this may all sound like myth and mystery, an excavation of Dinas Emrys in 1945 showed evidence of a lake and a fortress dating back to Vortigern’s time. The dragons were real, after all!
    Further to the use in the battle against the romans in 383 Magnus maximus some say to be the true King Arthur had the Welsh dragons on flags this corresponds to another Welsh song
    Yma o hyd- Still here

    DD = A voiced interdental fricative that exists in English as the ‘TH’
    LL = Another sound that does not exist in English. Go to make an ‘L’ sound and once your tongue is in place, blow out, allowing air to pass freely on either side of your mouth.

    The Griffin (dragon) was adopted by the Welsh as their symbol about 1700 years ago. It was originally the emblem of the Roman soldiers that had invaded Britain, it was painted on their shields. The Welsh fought them, and the Romans never fully conquered Wales. So the Romans were their enemies, but ... the Welsh rather liked that smart and dangerous looking dragon symbol, so they started using it too! It was probably quite confusing on the battlefield! The Welsh language is the oldest surviving European language. It is very different from English, French and German, for instance, are much closer to English than Welsh is. Welsh is related to (but not mutually understandable with) Scots and Irish Gaelic, and is very close to the Breton language spoken in north-western France (the Breton people are descended from Welsh and Cornish immigrants from hundreds of years ago - and the Cornish people once had a similar language too, but their language died out). Wales is a beautiful country with a culture and a language that is quite distinct from England, especially in its north and western parts. I'm not Welsh, but my cousins are, and I spent many happy times in Wales as a kid. It's one of my favourite places on this earth.
