    Hi Sam, I just picked my new 2024 Hyunday Kona electric here in California where they just showed up at dealers. Mine is the SEL (extended range EPA 261 miles) I got it for MSRP of US $38,010 (includes destination charges). I was going to pay cash, but Hyundai Motor Finance is offering 0.99% financing for 48 months so I financed it after paying $5k down. I love this EV. Coming from a 2011 Nissan Leaf, I feel spoiled with the tech included with this car. Mine is Cyber Gray and looks awesome 😊

    Just on pronunciation of Hyundai. The way you said it as “Americans say it” is the correct way to pronounce Hyunday. We Australians still say Hi Undai because of the silly distributor in the eraly days for Australia came up with the slogan Hi to Hi Undai. Correct way is Hyun Dae. Which is closer to the American method 😊

    500km range should be standard these days. What I do like about this Kona though is the space saver tyre. The era of EVs not having a spare tyre because of range and efficiency should be coming to a close. It's no longer necessary when we have EVs with 850km range on the horizon.

    Sam are you aware that MG are trying to exploit the popularity of the MG4 by raising their prices AND wasting money on TV advertising (to no target audience in particular).
    Meanwhile the GWM Ora Cat just got reduced by $4000. That means the Ora Cat can be got in QLD after rebate for $31k. $31k!

    In the Netherlands the first gen Kona's have finally hit, what I consider the milestone value below 20000 euros, that makes finally sense to invest in EVs in general. The current running worry is the LG battery issue that warrants battery replacement for certain Kona's between 11-2018 and early early (04?) 2020. It is however far from transparent which of these EVs are affected and which have had replacement batteries. In Europe the issue seems less prevelant and I'm seeing high mileage (>110000 km) sold second hand for below 20000 euros. The first gen Kona's have become interesting. But the issue with Kona's I think, is that its hard to navigate how reliable the batteries are. I know and have read news that newer Kona's from 2020 onwards don't have LG packs any more but feom a different Chinese battery manufacturer. I think therefore this new 3rd generation Kona will not have LG batteries as far as I am aware, contrary, to what electric Vikingbis stating in this video, of I understood the electric viking correctly in this video.
    With all of its misfortunes, I think Hyandai has a very interesting proposition for this new and improved Kona. I still think the price os too high for what you get and in that sense a second hand Kona makes more financial sense in the long run. As soon as this third generation Kona comes below 20000 euro value this will be a very I yeresting EVto look out for, provided there will not be more battery issue surprises, so that will in my view be the thong to look and watch out for with second hand Kona's and is going to be the challenge to get thatbinformation in the long run. I notice today it is not easy to get battery health and status of older EVs, and we still seem to do business the old fashioned way, which makes transparentbinformation to make a sound decision for a second hand EV just as challenging as a second hand ICE vehicle. And this while in my view somehow electric has a much longer lifespan potential even at higher mileage. I notice this is also something that needs a readjustment of how to team higher mileage RVs compared to ICE vehicles. I expected a second hand first gen Kona with 170000 kilometers on the odometer to be below 15000 euros. But most are still slightly below 20000 euros, so they hold their value quite high in my view! So yes, I think a Kona in general is a good value proposition to look out for in general in my view. I personally like the older design and size of the Kona better. The first and second gen are quite reasonably sized for the European roads, especially the Netherlands, in my view, and provide quite a decent a weather all season range of 300 kilometer even at higher odometer values, from what I've seen here and there. Could be a tad better in terms of capacity in wi yer for true 300 kilometers in winter with normal use. Perhaps something for the 4th gen vehicle. I don't think this third generation Kona design looks nice. It is very bulky and I don't believe the improved c.o.d. for one instant, based on common sense. I agree that smaller tires make any car more frugal. I've even noticed a 3-4 kilometres per litre improvement with smaller and narrower tires consumption on my ice vehicle. There's a reason the skinny tires on a BMW i3 work.
    I think for a third gen Kona the previous size could also have worked in my view, by more smarter use of space. In my view they could have tried more to reduce the front bonnet space for more interior space, experiment with a sliding rear bench to play with compromising between leg space and boot space or more clever designs to fold the rear bench flat. We're seeing smart designs with the cybertruck rear collapsable bech and the ID2All and ID buzz also showing interesting usecases of the rear bench design, instead of a fixed bench, that will likely be too small for most people (I seen so many EV rear bench videos that are still cringeworthy to see with the compromises for rear seat passengers in 2024!!! Rear seat space and comfort design still seem to be a huge challenge compared to the front seats for midtier and compact EVs, and we're still accepting the compromises instead of smarter compromised design). I am looking forward to seeing the third gen Kona reviews.

    I think I would prefer a BYD premium Seal for the same sort of money, more range, better performance, equipment and RWD.

    • @Paul-ow9dd
      @Paul-ow9dd 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Recently drove the Seal Performance and was blown away by the 390kw of power. The Premium RWD is no slouch either with 230kw of power. I've reluctantly had to move away from nearly buying the Seal due to its low ground clearance. The steep beginning of my driveway causes the Seal's bumper to be within 2 centimetres of the concrete where the steep decline meats the flat concrete. I'm guaranteed to scrape the under leading edge of the front bumper. Even the demo Seal with under 600 kilometres has bumper damage, so salespeople or demo customers have scraped the vehicle. The chassis ground clearance is low as well, so potholes and bigger speed bumps will cause grief for many owners. Pity, as the Seal is a great car to drive. But BYD stuffed up with its height. Too low!
      To compare, my VW Polo is quite low but at least has 5cm clearance under the bumper on my steep driveway. A Tesla model 3 has 6cm. So, Model 3 it is for me. If the Seal was higher I would have bought either the Performance or Premium.

      @@Paul-ow9dd Ludicrous Feed talked about removing that lip under the bumper area if it became an issue

    • @Paul-ow9dd
      @Paul-ow9dd 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GDM22 It's not the rubber lip at the back of the bumper on each side that is the problem. It's the whole front leading edge of the bumper that has NO protection and when it scrapes concrete or bitumen then the underside of the bumper is damaged. A hard enough scrape could crack the bumper as well. On the Seal the black bottom of the bumper looks to be replaceable, but I imagine it's going to be a grand or two as a spare part - if available.
      On many ICE vehicles they have a sacrificial hard rubber/plastic strip that acts as a warning that your close to damaging the bumper as that strip is two or 3cm in height. EV's have no sacrificial "warning" strip. You scrape the bumper and it's damaged.
      Unfortunately, a deal breaker for me as the Seal is lower than most vehicles. A major flaw, and I imagine a LOT of owners are going to damage the front bumper.
