Update for Adirondack Chair and Rocker - Racking fix and Prevention

A few have brought to my attention that their chair developed a habit of racking, after some weeks or months. We did some research and determined that the racking could be brought on by one of two ways.
1. The chair was assembled with wet wood (not kiln dried or air dried)
2. The chair was built with pre-drill holes that were too big.
(or possibly both of these)
So, I purposely built a chair that used green (very wet) lumber, and I also used a #10 pilot hole for #8 screws. And sure enough, after a bout 3 weeks it started to rack.
We then created an easy solution to fix this rack. That way everyone could still get quality use out of the chairs they built. (although, I recommend in the future using kiln dried wood, and the proper sized screw holes.

My wood was horrible, I didn't use pressure treated. I wanted to use something that didn't cost a lot for my first chair. The wood built up on all my blades after a couple passes. I would predrill a hole and sap would come out of the whole. It made the build so much harder. No racking yet but thanks for the update
He doesn't use pressure treated. It is kiln dried though.

Do you happen to have a template on converting an existing Adirondack chair into a rocking chair? I’ve 2 lovely flat based chairs but would love to turn one into a rocker

Hi,
Here is a link to the plan for the rocker. There isn’t really a way to convert a chair to a rocker. Even though I designed them to look identical, they are quite different. Most pieces have different shapes, angles lengths etc.
That was required to achieve a perfect balance and center of gravity for a nicely working rocker.

What wood be ideal construction lumber grade to use and the moisture content ?
And also using ceader where do you buy yours and also what price is a fair price thanks James and photo bomber !! Waiting on templates starting on tables 😊😊
Using glue will that help this issue? Or any other adhesive
Pressure treated is great!
Getting it kiln dried is best. Moisture content below 10% is ideal.
I buy cedar from the big box store like Lowe’s or Home Depot when I can get it.
And yes, using glue will definitely help the long term strength.
Apart from the obvious as dried as I can get… how dry does the cedar need to be in general? Kiln dried or a year or…
Mr. King, I'm building my first Kid's sized chair. Do you have brace dimensions for that project?
Would you recommend doing this for all chairs if you’re selling them? Easy fix for my own chairs if it happens down the road, but I have started to sell these.

It's probably a good idea if you are selling them! As a side note, this is not the chair I sold for many years. It was an Adirondack that was only about half as comfortable. I designed this chair specifically to see if I could create a really comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing chair. think this chair would far outsell the the old ones I used to build.
Hey James, and others... I’m new to woodworking. Therefore, i’m slowing building my shop tools. My goal is to build a few, but hopefully a lot of the Adirondack Chair. I don’t have a huge budget... but i’m in the market for a Bandsaw. I’ve kind of narrowed it down to the Grissly Brand. The entry level model GO803Z 9”($349) and the GO555 14”($850). Can i get by with the 9” saw, or is the GO555 worth the extra $500.
Or, should i go with an entirely different saw manufacturer?

Hi James, so good to hear from you again! I just ordered the full set of templates for the chair and the rocker. What are the chances that this upgrade will become available with the templates?
I’m referring to wooden templates.
There’s no real way to represent these braces with the templates since each end has both a miter cut and a bevel cut.
The compound angle can’t be cut on a CNC as a template. And even if it could, you couldn’t use it to trace out a pattern on a 2x4 to make it.
The easiest way is to just copy the steps I did in the video and measure & cut it.

What brought me to subscribe is your Adirondack rocking chair. I'm looking for plans for a Boston Rocker. I had one that my grandmother had given to my mother when I was born, seventy-four years ago. My mother gave it to me when my daughter is born then took it back and gave it to one of my sisters. (Our mother was like that) I really like your chair and may end up building one, I especially like the wheels on the ends of the rockers. Even made of cedar that's a heavy chair. If you please Sir! Any suggestions about plans for building a Boston Rocker. I've got a bunch of cherry and a bunch of black walnut I really want to put to use.

these 'anti-rack' braces really take away from a nice looking chair. so...........what is the maximum moisture content of the wood, and the m,ax drill size for the seat back, that would ensure no racking? would gluing the back slats help too? please advise. i don't want 'racking' nor these obtrusive braces.
Depends on the species entirely. You’ll have to test it out. Furniture grade dryness is just fine though.
But they most certainly aren’t obtrusive. They are completely invisible from the front and sides. You have to turn the chair around 180 degrees to even see them. And even then, they blend in like part of the framework.

It’s the single screws in all of those thin back panels that are loosening since they are all on the same plane they rack together from side to side. I know it’s supposed to be a quick build but those 2x4’s ruin the beauty of the design. The time spent cutting those 2x4’s you could have notched those back rails into the cross braces

There isn’t a wooden template tor the rack prevention piece unfortunately. Because it wouldn’t work. The ends are cut at compound angles, both a miter & a bevel. I have a free download to a sheet with the exact dimensions though.

The template kit has several pieces marked out. Are these part of that kit also?
Because it’s a straight 2x4 there is no template for it. Especially since the end cuts are compound with both miter and bevel.
But it is in the plan with the exact measurements and angles.

I’ve got a better solution that you won’t see at all like these 2x4’s and will be easier for some that may not have a miter saw.
You will need a drill bit and long drill bit extension, 2 pieces of threaded rod, 4 washers and 4 nuts for the threaded rod.
You will drill a hole thru all of the back spindles down low and then go above your center brace about a foot to 18” or so above the seat and drill another set of holes. Slide the rod thru both holes and install washers, nuts and tighten. You can also drill a larger hole on each outside spindle hole about a 1/2” deep to recess washer and nut so they aren’t seen.
I’ve used this process on chairs, tables, and other furniture Sndbit works fantastic and gives you forever adjustment if you need.
Won't work. The entire chair back has a compound curve.
James charge at least some money for your efforts and you will how they majority of people taking advantage of you will start dropping like flies . When they see 2 dollars is too much ! Jejeje please get rid of some of those Remora fish ! And you will have extra time you didn’t know you had .
