Roof chop dilemma... issue with the A pillar ❌
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 23 ส.ค. 2024
- We chopped the roof 8 inches which is what we wanted but the goal was to make the least amount of cuts as possible... As we tried the roof back on the A pillar doesn't line up at all which means we have to make more cuts to make it work.

seems to me easiest way is to spit roof down the middie and widen it. If you would measure the width of A pillar on body and the width on roof cut and subtract the difference you could make a strip to 'stretch' the roof width
And they could put louvers in the "stretch" panel!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Agreed
I agree
Disagree, it’s more time consuming
I can hardly even watch this because of how Chad is going to make this so complicated when all he has to do is widen the roof.
If you don't weld all the layers of metal in the pillars, road vibration will eventually weaken the outer layers of metal and cracks will form.
Won’t be as strong either.
What makes you think it will ever see the road again
They are supposed to be welded with oxy/act...it's how you make sure you get the necessary penatration. Car. Has a full frame..
How would thay be done?
@@MaximumDogHerderby drilling and removing the the outer metal then weld the inside and reinstall the outer metal
I thought that a 8 inch chop was way too much. Once the seat is in I wonder if there will be enough head room.
You will pretty much have to sit on the floor. NOT practical and an SOB to drive.
Mine is chopped 8 np
ALSO FRONT WINDOW IS TOO LOW & SMALL LOL
@@frankducatelli2572 mine is cut this much but my roof slopes back
It was funny as when they were lining up the roof and Doug said “Measure it” and Chad quickly replied “No”.
With a piece of tape 😂
Shame - that was a great car a week ago
@@Hambone00007 It was a cool looking car, but I think it’s going to look great chopped and lowered. Not sure about the other changes to the front and back, have to wait and see.
I don't think he knows how to read a tape measure, he calls the marks ticks???
With out spreading the roof, theres problems ahead, one being making the roll up windows twist round and curve/ inward lean, plus, pushing everything inwards will make the front view look like small hat on giant head
I doubt it makes it to getting windows anyway just like the others before this
I vote he just chops the windshield Al leave the roof off..me and my boss did that to a 50 merc 4 door and it made the cover of Hot Rod magazine
windows are as rare as Paint in Chad's Workshop
Chaddy, you need to stop for a little bit and look at the situation before you grab a saw. Simplest way to fix this major boo boo were to section the roof to match the all the pillar angles. Wallaaa ! easy peasy lol.
By cutting all the pillars, door tops and bottoms, back side window areas, etc. You have created so much more work than necessary. And you'll still probably end up sectioning the roof to make it all come together in the end anyway. Not to mention the side windows will never roll up and down, or fit the harsh angles. So much for taking this one all the way to the paint booth. Next time call me before you begin such a thing Lol!
👍🏻sometimes one shouldn’t rush into this kind of thing without giving it good thoughts…
That is what he always does. Its not about doing it right , its about generating content.
That what my brother said about his last wife.😂😃😃😃😃😃😃😃
Would of been lot easier to just cut roof down middle and widen the roof to match pillars
That would require forethought and sensibility.
I sat here and said the same thing to myself but it's his car and he's doing it his way. To me it seems like there would be less work adding roof skin rather than all that cutting and angling the A pillar but maybe not...
Car would look weird with a wider roof I think.
Hello, cut down the center of the roof and add about 4" strip to push the roof out on both sides, good luck.
I agree. makes everything else line up.
@TKO44647 stop with your noise hater!!!
@Aaronlewis8846 the truth hurts 😂
I don't think this build will ever get finished. Its going to be here one day gone the next 🫠.Smiles 😃from Huntsville Ontario 🇨🇦
Why must every build be so radical? Why not a mild custom that is actually drivable when finished with real glass and working windows etc.?
bad chad is butchering nice old cars just for viewer numbers , no intension of any high craftsman work
He did not think this one out
Just this one? He can only show you what he's doing so what you see is what you get. No thought, no plan, and no measuring. That's all a waste of time. What he did today is probably not even symmetrical.@@catman19
@@catman19he never does
They are never put on the road, another vehicle with unglued looking room
This one is painful to watch.
Here we go doing it the hard way.
Looks so good, it makes me wonder why they didn’t build any like that from the factory. I’m looking forward to seeing where this one goes.
not enough time is being spent before your next move .... sad cause we out here can see how much more work your making for your self .... and you know what ....I am not a Hater ... I am a CAR LOVER with your best interest in mind
Its never about doing it right, just do it, it wont ever matter to me, its only going into the shed anyway, Chad would never build me a car, there are another 100,000 builders I would go to first.
Bro nobody gives a shit lmao
@@dbabb2484 Thats funny I already have 7 thumbs up, so others do agree, maybe you need to take your blinkers off.
Hey bud you do realize that these people make money from all of the hater’s and the people who enjoy the process of making these cars. Keep on dinging that bell 🛎️ 😂
@@loren1610 I cancelled my sub, I only watch him if im really bored.
@@james-ew7kl Its so damn frustrating, he's damn lazy, thats why he takes short cuts all the time.
Split the roof down the middle and widen it.
Kinda hard to work the seam when it's down the middle. Better to get another roof skin and cap it so the seam is around the outside edge. That still leaves the area in front of the back window. The window will need to lay down and it will take 4 relief cuts to flatten out that hump... same deal as a 49 merc. Need to pay special attention to the profile if the roof...it's supposed to be a smooth arc. Screw it up and ya end up with a hump.
The advice of widening the roof would eliminate the future problem of the side windows rolling up to fit
Yep…easier than curving the side glass inward to fit!
Probably won’t be an issue, those cars have a ton of adjustment in the window tracks.
What about some Pepsi glass with some Bad Chad flexible chrome if ya know what I'm trying to tell you? @@slvrktman7824
That thing is hideous, the windows look like mail slots.
Agree with splitting it down the middle and widening the roof, it solved the side and front post problems at the same time.
You have not gone to far on the chop unless your knuckles rub on the visor🤣looks great
As always, good job, Jolene. Because you operate behind the scenes, it's easy to forget what a good job you are doing. I love the show.
Chad I absolutely love your videos. All day at work I’ll just have them playing in my headphones listening to you explain things. It truly inspires me keep pushing on my projects and to finally paint my truck completely on my own. Love your attitude, I love your style, keep the good content coming. You and Jolene are a true inspiration.
Hi guys, gonna have trouble with side windows, so l'm guessing no windows later, going to look good once done. Shane from down under
We all knew that Chad’s 8 inches would cause problems. It’s just too much!
Bro, that sounds so wrong. 😂
@@daddysails8926 yeah, I definitely don’t want to be part of it.
8 inches should e a Blessing 🤣🤣
Stay tuned fellas. It all can be worked out. It's just getting started. So calm down !!!
@@Aaronlewis8846 exactly, yes give it an hour and it will be quite close already. Calm the fuck down !!!!
Watching these videos gets me to thinking of how I could chop the roof on my wife's ford edge. Can't wait to see what happens tomorrow. Keep up the work guys. You'll get it.
I kind of thinking the guys will be chasing there tails on this one!
Widen the roof
Right away you can see the angle of the front windows are off.. the glass is going to have a curve in it , no flat glass here
The real problem is going to be when they put the glass back in...both windshield and doors. Messing up the geometry is going to cause real issues.
it doesn't matter, it will never be finished
Chads cars never seem to get glass.
The background wall looks cool. It's like a studio. Very professional.
Great work Chad. This Monday quarterback was thinking, for a short time, that you could have seen the offset earlier. but then you, the pro, showed me, and I went back to being a student
I've been following you for 3 years I'm glad to see this one is going to paint
Hey Team Hiltz how is everyone doing? Everyone was hard at it today getting the pillars lined up and welded. Chad a viewer yesterday was Howlin Wolf Garage and he mentioned in the comments that he is doing a roof chop on a shoe box as well. His cuts did not all go as planned either I don't believe. The only thing that I forgot to check out on his channel is whether he had all the arm chair critics as well! You or Jolene might be interested in taking a look at his videos of it. Doug & Nate you guys really help make the team it is fun watching you all working together. Jolene great job as always and you really get great close-ups like today on your videos for those just learning they can see exactly what is being done! Everybody keep up the good work and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
The car , Howlin Wolf is chopping is putting this one to shame already .
I like how each of you have ideas or different views and you sort it out with no issues or hurt feelings... sign of great respect for each other.
All Three of you are doing a good job keep going and i love your new garage door
LOL, you told him to "take off the metal from the paint", i'm in stitches now 😁😁😆😅🤣
Why would you just weld the outside?there are 2-3 layers to weld.
Just another day at the office Champ. Looking good! 😉✌
Maybe??? Slice the roof down the middle and add a section
!
I told you there would be problems on "A" pillars because of hard chop!
Yeah but looks like they worked it out sooo!!!!!
The question is, who would you rather make your custom car, Chip Foose, or Bad Chad? To quote Huey Lewis sometimes bad is bad.
You are comparing an artist to a yard art sculpture. That's not even a legit question.
8000 or 300,000.
You have to compare like for like. Chip Foose ain’t going to chop a car on Chads time frame or budget. They are both great at what they do.
i love the way that theres no panic or blame games if things go skewiff..just quiet discussion and get it fixed.. power to you 4..
If you cut the roof into 6 separate sections, then all posts could be lined up to the cuts. Sorta like widening in all directions. Then fill in the gaps on the roof with sheet metal. there's already what looks like a V from the front center, to cut along. I really like the look from the front. Should be nice when you're done!
the new wall looks really good its a learning pleasure watching everyone working together
I think the $500 would have been better spent on a work bench and vice. It must be awkward for all of them working on the concrete floor all the time.
Headed in the right direction! Great build thanks for letting us be able to watch!!
Very radical...I think glass may be a slight issue...but im here for the ride...cya tomorrow guys 😊
As said by many, cut the roof and make the pillars meet easy, less work, more shape that works. Rear window will be harder still, so make it easy on yourselves, common-sense approach?
Good luck from England.
I just so happened to send them a 4" lowering blocks kit, and it left Toronto today. I hope they get it in time to use it on this car.
That was a nice thought man !! Right on ,,,, he will love that !! 🤠👍👍👍
Maybe this will be a open top snowmobile hauler.
Great save spreading those pillars Chad!!!
Where’s the air hose blowing the welds? Only on some things?
Sometimes you need to do some research and make good choices . You just can't say lets chop 8" out , there is a reason why that isn't done on the shoe box . Stick with a formula that works.
Will you have to split the roof 1/2 to make widow post match ?
To all watching this is not the right way to do things, its only how clowns do it. Don't try it you'll only destroy your project.
I’ll bet both my swingers this one won’t get painted either!
I'd love to see Chad chop a 32 Ford I bet that would be a fail to
Not only does it sound like a machine shop at 0700 in the morning in my space. I get to watch 2 vids in 1 day. I work on the grave. Happy Holidays..... Joleen.🎅
Flat door glass wont bend ,widen roof.
She’s got that look!
Beautiful build and your just getting started!!!! Congratulations
Classic Hot Roddin…. Working it out as you go…..🤙😎
Another lesson on how not to chop a roof. The roof needs to be cut and widened. The side glass rolls straight up, not at an angle. You can lay the back glass down to fit the roof. It's also going to be fun getting a new windshield cut.
Take what you want and throw the rest away it what Chad says...at least you can say it's entertaining to watch. Lets see how he gets out of this.
I wonder if they considered the window alignment. I would split the top
You didnt make a mistake your instincts of hard chop look good ... no need to second guess ... just problem solveing!! Kudos!!
another one bites the dust...
Next time measure top and bottom of proposed cuts to see miss match. Ian narrowed the whole lower body of a VW so the pillars matched up better.
Ian is the "Tin man"
why not cut the roof down the middle and add a piece to make it wider and line up the posts.
Bad Chad is the man when it comes to metal everytime I think he's lost he comes up with a workable solution
Yeah, but this time he didn't even mention widening the roof. He just likes to jump in as long as he is absolutely original.
Your right, he works through the issues and makes it work.
Of Course you don't know where to cut to get the right angle. It would have been REAL SIMPLE to cut the roof and have them Vertical for quick and easy fit. You would be finished now instead o massing around cutting and cutting to get the angle right. Amd you haven't even started on the door fram e angles . GOOD LUCK WITH THAT CHAD. You have relly bogged the project to an almost standstill.
Sweet looking chop . Its funny reading the people freaking out thinking he messed it up. This aint his first chop boys. Split it down the middle....bahaha. love this build!
Amazing job getting it to fit together.
I like the new look of the shop. Well done
Chads has the vision and the teams got this. It’s going to look bad ass when finished. To think someone put that photo in the bonnet hoping someone would find it one day. I’d be getting that photo printed and framed for the shop wall.
This is gonna be absolutely awesome.
This looks like a job for coat hangers to fix this screw up !!!! 😆
A lot of coat hangers
See if he did not read are commen. The fronts was on a slant back was start that 8 in was not rite
great crew working together nicely. the chop looks great so far,
should be more measureing tape going on
8 inch high windshield ? WOW How the hell are you going to see out of it ? I guess at this point its a mute point.
Now that you chopped it so radical and have to make a radical cut on the angle of the lower windshield posts it is going to cause fit problems with the windshield glass frame .
The windshield is just flat glass, make a cardboard template and have a glass place cut it, not a big deal
Tilting in the window post will cause the window frame glass frame part then to also move inwards , right ?
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Hear we go again afu
Section and widen the roof 2 cuts about 10 in. on either side of the peak at it's flattest points
Do pillar cross weld repairs account for weakness of cutting up internal honeycomb section?
Yes. To properly put strength back in you should offset your cuts through each section. Karl Fisher has a video on Make it Kustom on TH-cam that explains this.
A little too much of chop, 5 maybe 6 inches chopped at the most to give more space to lean the A pillars
Cut the roof down the middle add sheet metal that might make everything fit. make the roof wider ??💥💥
Jolene, Outstanding Camera Work. I learnt so much today re: fabrication.
Chad and jolene and everyone that looks absolutely awesome. I'm sure glad you're getting the roof to fit back on hopefully the rest goes easier for you. Keep up the great work all of you 👍 👏
Awesome chop you guys you will have a lot of naysayers but screw them basement mechanics awesome job on video Ms. Jolene and give Fina a pat on the head for me
Easy or more difficult way? Cut roof in the middle. Widen roof. It is tough watching you cut down the posts ouch. Now the games begin, more surprises.
I think i would split the roof, I do like the curve in . But I would be worried about the window, I think the window track is going to have to curve also. More work in the door.
But happy to wait and see how it all plays out. Might even learn something. Keep it up guys, and Jolene.
Wicked chop, looks good guys !
Jolene Does an Excellent job with the camera. She consistently finds great angles to film all the visual details.
Great Work Jolene 🎉
The metal magician at his best..... thanks for sharing Jolene, you and Chad and Team Hiltz have a very Merry Christmas!!!
Man , Radical chops look great 👍
great recovery on the front pillars chad its going to look great
Looks awesome.
How long have guys been watching Chad? What's with all the negative comments 😐
I like it, it’s chopped the way guys did it back in the day.
This is what happens when someone that don't know what they are doing does something wrong, screwed up a jaguar,Ford coupe, 2 cars building a coe.hupmobile ,none done ,none done correctly.most all unsafe on the road.unsafe engineering, how about having to remove body to change battery.praise God Chad holds stock in bondo.a smarter person would have studied other hops to learn how to do this one properly
With all that cutting an bending inward it gonna make the roof ( as it in now) show wider than normal to posts ! In my opinion.
