    This is the BEST video on TH-cam for this subject! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I just got a cowhide from a friend who is a butcher and I’m following all of your steps. (My first time and man, is it work!) I am to the salt stage now and wondered if you’d share your brains, egg, and baby oil recipe? I have no idea what ratio to use since I’ve never tried this before. My son has already claimed it for his room and I want to get it right!

    I've seen Brain tanning before and as I heard it was especially helpful to use the brains from the animal type being tanned, but also in the recipe it called for urine, the urine they said could be human, horse or just about any other animal not specifically to the hide...
    Urine use to be used in the making of black powder too
    Anyway... Job well done!!!

    • @Luckingsworth
      @Luckingsworth ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Uric acid, the main thing that makes urine, urine, is also used in many moisturizers as it is very good for the skin! Probably why some people would use it on a recipe for leather. Make the leather softer and more hydrated.

    Turned out really well, and I know there's much more work that went into this then what the camera can capture. Something that surprised me was how you washed the hair side before you smoked it, which should of made your hide go hard ?? How did you get away with that ? Very curious.

    • @fourseasonsnorth
      @fourseasonsnorth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Christine! Yes, it's very rewarding. The recipe came about through lots of research and observation. Brains have been by the Native Americans for centuries in traditional tanning, but you can also use egg yolks, tallow, and/or soap. Basically every animal has enough brains to tan their own hide!
