Building a 8" Coaxial Stereo Speaker & Subwoofer System with Tang Band - by SoundBlab

  • This build uses new drivers from Tang Band (www.tb-speaker.com) in the form of two 8" coaxial drivers and an 8" pancake style subwoofer driver. The quality of these drivers are exceptional, and this is definitely a high end build. These drivers perform very well, and sound smooth with great detail in the highs (up to 40000Hz), natural mid tones and the high power subwoofer provides plenty of bass down to 35Hz.
    There is no build plan for this build due to its complexity, however the parts list and the SketchUp files available to all my Patreon supporters here: / 2-1-tang-band-32023330
    I will also share the files later to those who support me on TH-cam Membership when it's launched.

      How would you suggest I go about ordering the TB drivers? Ive been to the website, however was unable to discern any checkout process. I absolutely adore the look of these coaxials, and would love to attempt this build! Ps just subscribed to your patreon! Keep up the beautifully inspired work!

    Really like these coaxes, one of very few that have tweeter coupled to midrange cone the right way. Wanna try the 6.5" version in floorstanders, each coupled to two W6-1139SI(F)s. Too bad I don't have space in my livingroom for anything like that.

    What one fails to appreciate listening to these speakers on cheap earbuds is the tone and texture of the full range paper cone. They bring a sense of life that other drivers made of aramid or polypropylene just fails at.

    Beautiful! I could see these being an amazing setup for my bedroom. I currently have a pair of 15" 3 way horns in there! They have great palpability at low volume, and have the ability to blow out the window seals with minimal amp power. I bet your TB system sounded coherent and dynamic IRL, as it is very impressive through the TH-cam compression. The cabinetry work is just downright sexy!

    Really amazing. I know the sound doesn't fully translate through headphones but I think it's comparable to other recordings of speakers, and I have watched a lot of comparison videos, and can say that this sounds a lot better than any of those, at least for listening purposes. I had no idea that the capacitors etc. are so huge inside speakers.

    • @SoundBlab
      @SoundBlab  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you. Yes, that cap I used is one of the biggest I've put in a crossover.

    • @mndlessdrwer
      @mndlessdrwer ปีที่แล้ว

      The higher the quality of audio-grade crossover components the larger they tend to be. They're designed to be resistant to external signals, not be noisy, and to be consistent in their performance. They aren't designed to be small. So if you can get better performance by using a less efficient capacitor, inductors, or resistor design then that's what audio component manufacturers prefer to do. Obviously this isn't the case for mass-produced speaker crossovers, as such components also cost a lot more. Even some extremely expensive speakers have lackluster crossover network components due to cost and space saving measures. So instead of using smaller electrolytic caps, someone designing speakers for audiophile equipment will prefer to use poly film capacitors because they offer a cleaner output and more predictable performance. Same is true for iron core inductors versus air core inductors. Iron core are cheaper because you can use smaller wire gauge and the iron makes them more efficient, but the iron also picks up transient magnetic flux and causes some small amount of smearing to the sound that is absent with air core inductors. It isn't necessary to use the more expensive components. You'll still get a decent or even a great sounding speaker at the end if you use common electronics components, but if you're taking the time and money to build everything yourself then you might as well not skimp too badly on your crossover network.

    Really nice project there, but I wonder how do, speakers only, sound ... 8" drivers should cover the need of a sub. Not to mention that on sound demo tracks which have some bass, this one is kind of overwhelming (in a pleasant manner at least for me, but some of the audiophiles will find the joy without a sub). Keep it up with the good work !

    • @SoundBlab
      @SoundBlab  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks. Actually, the 8” drivers sound great on their own, plenty of low down bass, but the sub just provides that extra bit of room pressure for tracks with bass. For me music is not only hearing, but feeling.

    Is there any reasons why you choose using plywood and mdf? Why not build it using one single material instead of two?

    • @SoundBlab
      @SoundBlab  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wanted the birch ply for the outside finish. Used MDF for the baffle since it paints better with better finished and less effort, and I wanted a painted finish for the baffle to contrast with the wood.n The inside is MDF to save on cost. Birch ply is more expensive here.

    Very nice Hanri, quick question.
    Do you build the crossover based on manufacturer specs or
    do you measure each driver first and base the crossover on actual measurements?
    If you use measurements, how do you take them?

    • @SoundBlab
      @SoundBlab  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Richard! I get the TS values of each driver with the DATS from Parts Express, and make measurements with REW or FuzzMeasure. I use an UMIK-1 and an external sound card on MacBook Pro.

    VERY nice! Makes me wish I had spent the extra nickles on those drivers instead of the W8-2145's. Those were a simple build, no crossovers, but larger boxes. They sound pretty good with a flat response, but not good enough for reference standards; which is what I was hoping. These W8-2314's would probably get me there. Thanks for the video, nice work.

      Thanks! Yes, any full range driver without a tweeter will still need some tweaking in the passband to really get a good result and flat FQ response.

    Great built, thank you! Since this build is supported by a sub, wouldn`t it make more sense to use the Tang Band W6-2313 instead? Don't smaller drivers have advantages in regards of directionality, etc.? Comparing W6 and W8: What would be the better choice in terms of audio quality for a 2.1 (or even 2.2) setup?

    • @SoundBlab
      @SoundBlab  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks! These drivers where sent to me by Tang Band with the instruction to do this build. The W6 would make for a smaller enclosure, which I would prefer, and will also work great with this sub. The W8 certainly has enough bass in the low end to do without a sub, but when we go deeper into the performance of this driver, we can see that it has limitations in the lower end in terms of excursion limits and thus distortion. The W8, when crossed over at around 8o to 100Hz, with a subwoofer will actually perform rather well with less distortion in the lower registers since it will not need to play there. Thus we get a cleaner sound.

    very well made. I've almost never heard a factory made speaker and homemade that has good sound in the middle bass. I always have to mute 200hz - 400hz. you have to have a 5mh coil and 100uph capacitor together and then you put it in series and a resistor that regulates how much to dampen. This is with 4 ohm to 6 ohm speakers.
    What are your thoughts and your opinion on this? Not many people make speakers and mute frequencies that's too much of! I talking about pasift crossover.

    • @SoundBlab
      @SoundBlab  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. I use good measurements and equipment to model the frequency response, then listen and tweak until I am happy with the result. I will then build the crossover and compare the real measurement with my modelled response to check its integrity. In this way you can really tweak the response to suit your taste very precisely with the fewest count of crossover parts possible. This speaker performs well across the passband and does not need any strange tweaking. The quality of the drivers are exceptional, and therefore we need less crossover parts to make this work really well.

    Incredible sound, i want to make them in another cabinet. Can i make them in a cabinet with the same volume, but a different shape? Regards Mick

    • @SoundBlab
      @SoundBlab  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! It is possible, but the shape, ratio and size of the baffle is linked to the measurement results and the ultimately the crossover design. If you change it dramatically you will have to also adjust the crossover to compensate for the changes. Sometimes the difference in frequency response can be detrimental to sound.

    Fantastic Build. I am currently trying to select drivers for my set up and these have been at the top of the list since I first laid Eyes on them. I do have one question on the 8" full range drivers. I was under the impression that a XO was not necessary for these drivers and that some people have added a separate tweeter if need be? Any help from anyone watching here would be great. I'm a newby!

    • @SoundBlab
      @SoundBlab  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! The woofer and tweeter are separate drivers mounted in a coaxial configuration, with the tweeter occupying the centre of the woofer. Therefore you still need to create a XO to make these work together. You can however not connect the tweeter and just use a separate tweeter in a normal 2-way configuration, but that would be counter intuitive to the benefits of a coaxial in terms of time and phase alignment.
