Thank you for clearing the air on the truth behind the ring situation. I think a lot of people aren't sure why this happened, because popular media didn't explain it like it should've been told.
I think the more scary one is when people don't speak and just watch. This could be used for blackmail or watching children. It's pretty jacked up. I will only ever have one on a doorbell. Never inside my home.
I have a separate issue to mention. For months my Ring Doorbell2 has recorded my USPS Mail Carrier delivering my mail to my house mounted mailbox next to my doorbell. All of a sudden last week my Ring stopped recording the mail delivery. I get my mail, but Ring does not record it. I did some searching and learned that there are WiFi blocking devices that exist. They are illegal. I suspect my mail carrier has started carrying such a device. If a criminal can disable your WiFi camera for less than $20 then these cameras are not useful. Looking for feedback from others. Google search it and see for yourself.
They do have these devices and they disabled my cameras and robbed my house with it the other day and dropped the device, the police have it now. It's crazy the things thieves are doing now
This is a prime example of why you don't put cameras in your house. If you put cameras on the outside then there is no reason for them on the inside. Also to come find out the lady didn't have the system secured it was easy to access from another source. All these cases that pop up like this are customer error.
@@TheBluesnbob lol got ya. This comment was 4 years ago and I rewatched it and was like not sure what he’s talking about. But yeah no cameras in my house. You’re just asking to be seen in your birthday suite.
My grandma recently died and I removed her ring cameras from the home and if I wasn't the one that Installed them and set up her account on my phone (she wasn't that tech savvy) it would just be another waste of technology that no one would have been able to use. Instead of having to chase down the previous account holder to use a second hand camera or doorbell, they should make an option where they can disable the device in the case that a ring device is stolen. Ring needs to figure this out.
I also gave him access so he can use the cameras as well. The two-factor authentication is smart and I appreciate the increased security with these cameras.
You are the very 1st person or piece of information that I have found that says anything about trying to prevent this and improve the situation. All I see are articles or videos about it happening or where you can buy a jammer.
Stories like this are why we need to move beyond passwords for authentication. Unfortunately, I don't see that gaining widespread adoption any time soon.
Yes I think we should all have RFID chips implanted into our hands or foreheads so we can use this method for passwords etc. The great thing is governments and big tech would never track us by monitoring them.
Someone accessed my home wifi through my 1 ring camera..they were able to somehow get on all of our computers. I know this because it never happens when my ring is blocked from the internet..
Well one problem in your video is that if ring marked all ip addresses that have logged in or blocked them then people who are not home who go to check their cameras won’t be able to get in because their ip would get blocked due to it being different than their home IP address. That also can change if they have a storm and the Internet gets knocked out because many routers have dynamic ips. Just thought I would share some knowledge.
It was not a hacker...it was a person that had the person's login information. Just enable two factor authentication and change your passwords regularly. Problem solved
Your two factor authentication process is BS against my RNG database. No, seriously I have a life (generally involves making other lives better) but getting past authentication verification is akin to skipping rope. The burden falls on the company. I have had Ring for almost 3 yrs, no problems.. I recently added a second location about a month ago, no problems until one Sunday morning around 1:15 AM . I alarmed it from the keypad sitting on a table 2 ft from chair while warching TV, then at 1:15 AM the alarm goes off, I disarmed it and checked everything, found no problems. I armed it again and called Ring about the false alarm, they said the history showed 20 pin rejections from the keypad and then a panic alarm entry setting it off all the while I was just watchingTV, and never touched the keypad. Ring said someone hacking in the closed system wasn't possible, and it was either a defect in the keypad or a glitch in the system. Thank you, again, for a reasoned and informed response to the problem of IoT items being hacked. This is only going to get more common and important as more and more IoT devices are deployed. Yeah, let's use a Password Manager and keep all of our usernames and passwords in one place, along with other sensitive personal details that some of them store alongside your passwords. It was found that on Windows 10 machines, many Password Managers, even when locked, were about as secure as storing passwords in a text file. In some circumstances, the master password was residing in the computer's memory in a plain text readable format. One problem with two factor authentication (2FA) is sim swapping. Sim swapping is accomplished through social hacking. A hacker will enter a store pretending to be you, and then they convince a worker to port your SIM card information to a new phone, one that they obviously own. Phishing attacks can also be used to bypass 2FA through the use of fake login pages. Further, hackers have developed means to bypass the following types of 2FA: hard tokens, call forwarding, knowledge-based questions, text message interception, and push to accept. Now, I am not saying to not use a Password Manager nor a 2FA, but I'm telling you to be aware of the risks and vulnerabilities, and research ways to protect yourself against the flaws in these systems.
OK! First off, how weak was your password? Was 12345678? This is how most people get hacked! You need to use upper and lower case letters as well as special characters of as least 12 places! And use 2-factor log-in options! Most people are clueless and leave their car doors unlocked in their driveway and wonder why they got robbed and security cameras are NO different! Using a weak 8 character password can be hacked in less than 20Min by someone who has any skills! I do NOT feel sorry for these people.
