    I found hummingbirds hovering over my huge lavender bush. What a pleasure to see them with the bees and butterflies. At first I didn’t recognize them being the garden newbie that I am. But once I did, I’m like a proud plant momma. It took many tries to get that lavender to take root.😅😅😅 Best wishes for your beautiful garden.i

      Agreed! I garden for both butterflies and hummingbirds, so there is quite a bit of crossover on the plants that attract both.

    Wonderful selection of plants! I'd love to see a follow-up when everything is in full swing and covered with hummers. I'm planning on growing Cardinal vine and hope it can handle our dry heat. We are just now getting out of the cold weather in the middle of April which is unusual for our area and the hummingbirds are emptying a full feeder each 24°. I know they'd prefer flowers and I can hardly wait for it!!! Happy gardening!

      Hello! That is so exciting that you have hummingbirds and are feeding them! The Cardinal Climber Vine is a tropical vine and requires water. It thrives in our heat and humidity. I don't know how it will do in the dry heat. I have seen a couple of videos of people who grow it in the midwest (not humid) and it does grow and flower for them. I notice the foliage isn't as full as what we have here, but they have hummers all over theirs too. And you really can't go wrong for trying it as seed isn't expensive if Cardinal Climber doesn't work in your area. I will do a follow up in late August/Sept. when we get the hummingbird migration. Happy gardening to you too! 😊🐛🦋🌺

      Hi Masuma, thank you and thank you for watching! You ask a is a really good question. Most everything planted in the ground I wrapped when we had that bad freeze event in December, 2022. The only pots I brought into my garage in this video were the Cuphea (Cigar plant) and the Porterweed. After the freeze event I moved them back out into the backyard. In the Houston, TX area we don't freeze often. I had other plants in pots I wanted to protect from the freeze, so I purchased a "pop-up" greenhouse and greenhouse heater and that saved my plants from 17 degree weather and 0 degree wind-chill (which was very unusual for us). If you are interested, here is a link to a video talking about this temporary plastic greenhouse: th-cam.com/video/XTyZN8l0Tak/w-d-xo.html

    Thank you for such a nice video. Your yard is so beautiful! I am just starting my journey, trying to attract hummingbirds, and will look for some of these plants. I am in central Florida, so my plants might be a little different than yours. Thanks for the idea about googling the types of plants that attract hummingbirds in each area. I will definitely try that.

      Thank you! 😊 🐛🦋 I wish you joy and happiness as you start your gardens that attract hummingbirds! I found great resources for Texas and I am sure there are great ones too for Florida. I also watch You-Tube channels by gardeners in Florida, and they say Firebush does great in Florida (and there is a native for Florida). As I mentioned in this video - the hummers here love Firebush. ❤️

    • @ButterfliesNBirds

      Hello and thanks for watching! You can't go wrong with a Salvia that will thrive in your zone! One of the things that I did very early in my gardening venture was to Google what plants hummingbirds liked in my area and I proceeded to purchase and plant those plants. Your question got me to wonder if NM had something similar, and I saw this: birdwatchinghq.com/hummingbird-flowers-in-new-mexico/ ! If you start by planting what you like and they like, that is a big bonus! I have noticed the more diverse plants I have, the more I attract them. Happy gardening and good luck! 😊🐛🦋🌺

    Why don't you plant everything in the ground?

    • @ButterfliesNBirds
      @ButterfliesNBirds  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Excellent question! We have heavy clay soil, average rainfall of 48 inches a year, and areas in the yard that don't drain well. So, I have planted plants that are more sensitive to wet roots in containers. Ideally I would like containers that have no bottoms so the roots could grow down into the soil but the crown is way above the soil level. (We can easily get 4-6 inches of rain in a short period of time here. The most I have experienced is 47 inches of rain during Hurricane Harvey, in which we broke records).

    Beautiful! Im near lake Charles, so pretty much the same climate. I went to Buchanan's yesterday and loaded up after seeing your video. Do you cover all of your pots in the winter? Thanks

    • @ButterfliesNBirds
      @ButterfliesNBirds  ปีที่แล้ว

      You sure are - Lake Charles isn't that far away! Good luck with your Buchanan's haul! In the winter if we are going to freeze, I will take in the smaller containers into the garage and cover the larger containers with a "planket". We bought ours at Home Depot, but they are also online at sites like Amazon. We will secure the planket around the pot with twine so it doesn't blow away if there is any wind. They really do help with temperatures that are around freezing or a little below freezing. Otherwise I don't cover containers in the winter when the temps are above freezing.

      P.S. We had a couple female hummingbirds with us all summer long. They would just eat the tiny bugs/gnats in our yard and then drink the nectar from our flowers planted specifically for hummingbirds. It is so fun to watch them each day. (They really don't go to our hummingbird feeders when there are so many flowers). I can't wait for hummingbird migration to start! 😊
