You are right but in The Gunsmoke rule book it was considered not sporting. There are several episodes where that was discussed as being against the "rules" Something from the code of the West or something.

The first time I saw this episode, this scene took me greatly by surprise. It is a perfectly logical and justified way to handle it, but heroes in westerns more typically let their "honor" get in the way of good sense. And Chester not having a good alternative.....Matt: "How do you wanna do it?" Chester: "*Long Pause*, Shoot 'em."

I thought it was a fantastic way to go about it too. Sometimes love gets in the way of honor or even rationalization.
