Agreed! This video *almost* causes me to change my mind about Drop-A being the lowest I'll go on my 7. -Alas, I like the piano-roll notes being the same notes that I've already memorized on the fretboard.- Hollow Front [ 1:31 ] was my favorite riff in this video because it didn't start and end on the lowest note. Thank you very much for demonstrating that potential. Now I have a lot of pondering. Sleeping with Sirens [ 4:31 ] is another example of such an idea. [edit] Well, I'm about to order a mail order a 74 gauge string for the low-G (following the tensions on Stringjoy's online calculator), and use a 10-52 set for DGCFad. Wish me luck. [edit update] That just plain didn't work. Overall it made my instrument sound duller, and require a new setup. The G-string is a little thicker for the open-F (third string), and as a result it sounds wonky unless you go with a wound string. I ended up using a bass string for the 74 gauge and it just sounded like a dull bass string. I also ended up missing Drop-A -- the riffs that I already wrote just sound brighter and more defined in that tuning (I even use dyads under distortion from time to time). Sure, I could just write new stuff for a lower tuning, but I'd want a different instrument for that and I've only got one 7 string. Therefore, Drop-A is what I'll have to go for. The reason why I started this journey in the first place was because it has a slightly longer scale length (26") and therefore the high-e string has broken more than a few times with good bends. The solution that I'll have to accept is simply changing that string more often even if I don't change the whole set.
