      Came to the same conclusion end of 2019, bought myself an Orbea Gain F30 (converted to drop bar last year) and used it to get to work. Well, for a short time only obviously. But it uses the same motor concept and you put in quite a lot of work yourself. I quite like it, maybe I can even use it for its intended purpose one of these days.
      The time for roughly 20km is the same as with the car, considering going into the car park, getting it out and so on. In my mind, the extra effort is worth the cost on the environment and personal fitness that comes with commuting by car. Since most of the time I am only transporting myself and nothing else anyway.

      On a hilly route i would agree with you, but on a flat route after 25kph you now have a dead heavy bike to ride that is now laughing at you as it is no longer giving you anything lol. Unless they put the speed of the bikes up to 35 kph ass, for the vast amount of cyclists they are useless. I know for the vast amount that do buy these bikes 25 kph is ok for them, but for those of us that can ride faster that that on the flats don't want to then have to lump that weight around trying now to keep up with our faster riding buds.

I'd rather people use their own muscle power to get around, but at least there are less cars and more people out and about. Exactly, going by car at rush hour is stress, cycling a bike is like vacation before work. Even if biking takes a few minutes more, still much more enjoyable and extra time well spent. I really don't understand why most people still prefer a car for commuting, especially when it is only a few km like 3 or 5km. I mean 50 years ago it was common to show off that you were able to afford a car but this argument is probably gone by now. I guess it is that people never tried to use a bike for commuting and just have in their mind that it is not going to work for them.

    Great video!
    Which is faster is a very individual question.
    My drive to work is 35-40 minutes each way, the unassisted bike takes me 70 minutes in and 95 back (way home has an unavoidable cat4 and a cat3 climb). US spec ebike drops that to 60 minutes in and 75-80ish back and easily halves the effort riding conservatively.
    It's a 40 mile round trip, so having an assistance option is a wonderful thing especially on the back end after a 10-12 hour shift.
    Sure that's still a pretty big difference, but I think I'm on the more extreme side of commuting.
    End of the day, I ride primarily because I enjoy it. It also just happens to also be more economical, therapeutic, healthy and better for the environment.

    My commute from north of Bath into Bath by bike is about 1hr. I takes the same time in the car during peak times. Needless to say that when we finally go back into office, I will be cycling. An ebike would be handy for going up Lansdown in either direction but for now, I will stick to cake and good old fashion leg power with a dusting of heavy breathing.

    To make this a real world test you should actually do what nearly half of commuters do each day... first put the two kids in the car/on the bike, go 3 miles in the opposite direction to work, then turn round and go to work via the shop to pick up a pack of nappies, food for dinner etc all while it's raining.... yeah wont happen but that's why millions of us keep out beautiful diesel cars. All that from a hardcore cyclist who would never ever ride to work

    • @Gobtik
      @Gobtik 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless you drive on long stretches of motorway/a-road and never go into a city, a diesel is a terrible commuter vehicle. City driving destroys the DPF and kills your MPG, diesels are not designed for a 3 mile trip to school, couple of miles to a shop and a few miles to the work. Your engine will fail driving like that soon enough, get a petrol or electric for that sort of driving. Or better yet don't make the mistake of having kids and use a car only at the weekend for shopping and walk to the nearest shop for top-up stuff.

    • @boomchakalaka3715
      @boomchakalaka3715 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Gobtik yes if it was solely for commuting it would be a poor choice.. however in the weekends I like to take my kids away to the mountains, lake, beach etc something those poor children of parents who dont own a car because they are too busy trying to be "cool" by not owning one and saving the environment (ironically they end up missing out on enjoying the environment). Most importantly though I'm glad I've not been brainwashed into believing in not having kids or climate change so my three boys and I will continue to enjoy the great outdoors while those who profess to care about it almost never visit it (makes it even more pleasant out there too 👌)

    There are quite a few bikes using the MAHLE ebikemotion x35 motor drive now, the Orbea Gain, Scott Addict, Cannondale Neo among others. Seems to be the new standard for people who want a relatively normal feeling bike that doesn’t weigh a ton and produces just a bit of extra power to help you on the hills but completely cuts out anytime you’re moving faster than 20 mph.

    When I first saw the bike the thing that impressed me most was the novel way they had incorporated the battery pack to the bike. In a nice black waterproof bag which could easily be removed for charging or preventing theft. Unfortunately at the end of the video I was let down by the information that this bike was like all the other e-bikes and the battery pack was built into the bike. Other than that it was a great video but missed out why most people don't commute on a bike and it's due to the poor weather we have in the U.K.

    • @davidreeson3741
      @davidreeson3741 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      External batteries are fugly and, importantly, obvious. Part of the attraction of the Mahle system is it’s visually unobtrusive. You can’t steal the battery without taking the whole bike, which is surely another advantage over external batteries, no?

    • @njm312
      @njm312 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidreeson3741 I agree with what you say, the design was very sleek for an electric bike. My reasoning behind the reduction in theft is to make E- bike designers think differently than they currently are and I am assuming Merida would check out the comments in regards to their product. If they made the battery pack easy to remove when you locked it up and also built in a rear hub seize up function when the battery was not connected their would be less incentive to take the bike and harder for the bike to be ridden away, also they would then also have to pay for/steal another battery pack. Another thing the bike company could do would be to link the battery to the motor so only that battery worked with that specific rear hub motor.
      After I had added my post I thought of another reason a removable battery pack would be useful. The bike could be an electric commuter bike with all the extra battery weight and rear hub motor wheel weight during the week and at the weekend you could remove the battery pack and the rear hub motor wheel and replace it with a normal wheel and have it as a normal road bike and the only additional weight would the electronics on the top tube for operating the rear hub motor wheel (although this also could be a quick release item that you put in the removable battery pack) the plug in points for the battery and rear motor and the internal wiring connecting the two. Two bikes for the price of one ( probably the reason they don't/won't do it, why sell one bike that when you can sell two different types of bikes).

  • @nigeldepledge3790
    @nigeldepledge3790 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    OK, this is all well and good, but what if you don't have anywhere to store it safely while you're at work? I've never worked anywhere where I could take a bike into the building with me; and outdoor cycle parking always leaves it vulnerable. Even with the best lock, you can't protect (for example) light brackets or quick release bolts.
    Also, I've never worked anywhere that I could reach on cycling infrastructure - I'd have to have used normal roads for at least half of the journey (or all of it in some cases).
    These factors are important when taking the decision to drive or cycle; and they're not something that can be addressed by individuals - either they have to be provided by employers or legislated.
    Having said that, I did cycle to work in three of the places I've worked, and I'd love to try an e-bike, because that might have made it possible to cycle to work in some of the other places I've worked before e-bikes were a thing.

  • @mopedvieh
    @mopedvieh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Since I have to cover a distance of 37 km to work (one way) taking the bike is simply not feasible all the time. My split per week is usually 1-2 times taking the bike the full way, 1-2 times I take the car and sometimes I take the bike to the train in the morning, ride the remaining 5 km from the station to work and then the full way back in the evening.
    Time wise the bike is clearly a disadvantage since I can drive the whole way via a highway that has no traffic jams whatsoever. Car takes around 20 minutes, bike around 1 h and 20 min since I don't want to get sweaty (I don't ride E-Bikes). The whole way can be covered without any contact to cars, so it is really nice to ride.

    7.5 KM is the distance between my home and work place (door to door). On usual days, starting 9 am, it takes me 23 minutes to bike and about 30 to drive. This is due to traffic lights and stop signs. On days when i finish way past rush hour, it takes me 25 minutes to drive and around 17 minutes to bike (i can ride faster at night when there are no car or pedestrians around, and i don't need to be all that bothered with stop signs).

I enjoyed it, but there is more time for planning/prepping, my city has limited infrastructure and despite having bought a heavy duty bike (27+ tire, up to 1500 watts/90nm of torque) it is always breaking down. Been out for the last month because of a broken frame. I can't wait to get back into it, but making the decision to go full time bike commuter has not been as easy as planned.

The motorist turned too sharply to make a curve and climbed over the sidewalk and hit me. I was patiently waiting for the lights to turn green for cyclists and pedestrians. I was dressed in fluo, even my bike was painted in fluo.
    I've also stopped 2 car thefts from happening.
