Thank you for *not* including 'Tux Racer' in this list. Its probably the first 'gaming on linux' entry that I have seen that skipped it. Not so coincidentally, it is also the first 'gaming on linux' entry that showed several games that I want to play, several of which I had been unaware of. Thank you.
It does if there are no abstraction layers or anything like that. Games running using native code compiled to Linux binaries are native games. Things running via wine are not native but the wine layer abstracts the Windows commands to native Linux commands.
Which is a fair point. It is worth installing as a dual boot experience though IMO... my main reason for not switching completely is Photoshop. The point is, if more of us moved over there would be greater incentives for the big software companies to develop products, then we would have the best of both worlds.
Performance Languages: C/C++, C#, D, Java, Vala, Nimrod, etc... Scripting Languages: Lua, Python, Javascript, C# (there are others) Unity 3D game engine 4.0 can build native Linux games. It's written in C++ and uses C# and/or Javascript (Mono) for "scripting".
a native Psychonauts port done by icculus is selling for >=0.01$ in the humble bundle... psychonauts is a critically acclaimed game and I think it is probably the best native game for Linux ever.
To install minecraft, you download a .jar files, create a folder and place it inside then right click the jar and make it run as a program (in settings), that is what I mean by manual. Linux native means, you can just install easily and play easy.. not having to do specific things to play it... meaning you can just run it.
You're right after I posted the video also noticed this problem on the issue, but the goal was to show that there is good native games for Linux. Vc tem razão, depois que postei o video tambem percebi esse problemas na edição, mas o objetivo era mostrar que existe bons jogos nativos para linux.
I had no Idea about Machinarium, Amnesia or World of Goo... and aside #1 and #2, I had no idea about the top 10 either. The needs to be more advertising of that, so good job doing exactly that. I love how these more indie games tend to port to Linux probably to avoid the saturated market of windows... If Linux can become THE platform for indie gaming, that would be a good start. I say "start" and yet Steam should be ported to Linux soon and others will follow, so it's getting there for sure...
I didn't know that Amnesia, Penumbra and World of Goo were native Linux games. That's great!. I hope Steam (and Valve) make good games for Linux in the future :)
More games with reasonably good graphics: Savage2, Ryzom, World of Padman, Urban Terror, Sauerbraten. Warzone 2100 and OpenTTD are also two of my all time favourites.
While it's usually harder to get a game running on linux, those of us who know what we are doing can customize the game to our liking. Those glitches you get on your game are minor obstacles to us.
Actually Crysis works very well through Wine. Not sure about Modern Warfare, I bet it does too. Even though running apps through a compatibility layer slightly slows them down, some games actually work much better under linux. That's how awesome OS we have :)
@MrSunasuke that might be true, but for 95% its just the graphical interface that is changed + the software packages included, in over 95% of the cases the kernel stays the same, they dont need the graphical interface to develop their games, developers need the kernel to develop games, thats why linux programs work on (almost) all linux os's
Games seems to be one of the biggest issues people have with Linux. Although a lack of software doesn't mean an OS sucks. It simply means that the OS doesn't meet your needs. I don't play any of the newer high end games. So it doesn't matter to me if I can't run them on Linux. For the amount of gaming I do, there are plenty of good options for Linux.
actually it is possible for the code used for the initial installation of the game to be only for one platform, let's say run for linux, or deb, and exe for windows and what not for mac but the binaries and data files can be made till some point to be cross-platform, and only about 30% of the code must be optimized for a particular platform, but then again it all depends on the design of the SW and of the code...
Native Game is a game that runs in the selected OS without a compatibility software like Wine, or it's specific for an OS. Like some game in Windows. like Halo, that it's a native windows game only!. Linux didn't have too much games that runs natively before until now.
arent there some open source alternatives to the unreal engine that run on linux? and arent there some ideas to develop more games for linux? (vale, id soft. fe.)
Amazing job, man this was good, entertaining, and thorough... To be perfect: fix the sound, upload in HD, include minecraft :D cause even if you don't like it it's #1 anyway :D...
yeah, they do have control over the ones they make though, such as Portal and Half life but yeah I suppose it is up to the developers of the individual games. Although it would be a step forward by releasing the actual platform.
U mentioned about HoNewert (which as i assume is some kind of LoL clone) but u didnt mention about its parrent - Savage: Battle for Newerth which is unique from any windows game and provide a TONS of fun
Yes, that is the single most important use of an operating system... Then again, maybe not. Do you eaven read things that you write before you click send?
Actually you are wrong. I have BSD distribution on my computer and it uses Clang and LLVM. The Linux operating system as it was originally distributed (as early as ver 0.01) can boot a computer with no GNU userland at all. I'm sure you'd like to claim bash is enough to call it "GNU/linux"? How about X11? How about we go around calling it GNU/X11/CUPS/ALSA/Linux? I mean right there you've got your userland, windowing system, printing system, sound system, and kernel.
So are these all open source games from different distro repos or do I have to pay $ to play them?

I don't understand. Shank is from EA, it's native Linux, but what about the recent announcement of two web-only games for Ubuntu? Everybody said EA had no previous games for Linux.
Linux is a dynamic OS, which means that it adapts to the needs of the user community. If more gamers were to switch to Linux, there would be a great improvement. You think that you would not switch to Linux because of the lack of games, when really, it's the other way around: games in Linux are not great because there is not a big gaming demand from Linux users.
But the client doesn't make anything else. It just starts the Java-container of the game. With that logic, you could argue that Minecraft was windows-native because the Preloader is written in a Windows-native language. But all it really does is start the java-container of the game.
thx for the help lol...it will be long journey for linux to compete against windows in terms of gaming platform..it still quite buggy..but good to see it getting more mainstream than ever
Well, where is Nexuiz ? U think is actually over 23 or it is not mentioned because is free ? U mention Alien Arena so it is strange, think it is much better than that. Just my opinion...
The OS only uses about 500-600MB RAM (and that's on Ubuntu bloated POS) so you could easily get a 6 core, devote 5 to a Virtualbox and 7GB of RAM (leave one for OS) and play windows only games in that, or use Wine
technically as it runs in a virtual machine its not native to anything, but it is considered native and i would call it native, if you are going to say its native to Windows then it its native in Linux as it runs in the same way on Linux, OSX and Windows.
Wow, good to see many games for Linux already... And more good news for Linux: I'll be developing a game for Linux and other platforms too :) It'll be an RPG game with single and multi player mode. The singleplayer mode will have main story... Can't really tell when I can finish the prototype yet XD Oh and maybe I might release it totally for free... who knows? :D
I dont know about that man, those things are designed to not be upgraded, my tower may not look as nice, but i can upgrade my hardware whenever it needs to be
its still a native native game its been made to run on Linux, native has nothing to do with being easy to run. a lot of native Linux apps you need to install from source code its still native and is usually not considered easy by the average jo. not having to do specific thing to run it then you can call any game on Windows that needs directx not native as you need to do something specific.
Using the proper POSIX standards usually makes sure that a program can run on most *nix based systems. Also you can lock the system down completely by removing root access from the user and allowing for limited access. Linux has much greater potential and freedom than windows will ever have. I can see where you are coming from still though.
Valve needs to release steam for Linux, I have plenty of games on that platform that I would like to play through Ubuntu rather than Windows. In fact I would consider ditching Windows if they made all of my games compatible as unlikely as that may be.
It's sadly true, i guess that will take ages since the user base for gaming that Window has it's way bigger than linux ( of course ), and Game Developers will just focus on which platform gives them more money. Meanwhile i just don't care and i will continue contributing to the linux community and trying to improve the OS that i have been using for the last 15 years. Best Regards see u around
same thing goes for mac.... hoping linux and mac both get more market share. increased competition will help us all. Maybe my next mac will costs less.... ;-p
You don't understand. I can get any game I want to run on my Linux distro. If I wanted to I could play xbox live on my laptop... even though it would probably be really laggy considering the processor.
If u are using ubuntu, yes it's the one in the control panel, u should try with the fix i gave u. If it does not work, please create a post on the ubuntu forums, with ur problem and xandr output and i will be able to help you easily. Best Regards
Yeah, I know. Linux is not for gamers yet but there is a hope. Valve have already ported some nice games, though I don't think we will have linux versions Battlefield, CoD, Fifa... and those kind of "games for windows".

Who else thinks the Humble Indie Bundle and similar groups dramatically increased the amount of quality games for Linux in the last 2 years
It does if there are no abstraction layers or anything like that. Games running using native code compiled to Linux binaries are native games. Things running via wine are not native but the wine layer abstracts the Windows commands to native Linux commands.

Yeah, the people at Id software have always been way ahead of the curve. Gotta love them.
i tested both mint and ubuntu and ubuntu is little faster response both are good, i dual boot with Windows7.
Really nice collection of games. Thumbs up for including Prey, but I think you should have included UT2004 as well.

Sorry my mistake, the four starts at 28:58, and this game is wonderful.

Xonotic the best alternative for Unreal Tournament!
Native Games are running flawless.
I was reluctant to migrate to Ubuntu because of the games... but you sir, made me take the last step!
Great games indeed! =D

Machinarium looks surreal as hell. Gonna give it a whirl.
I would love a list for this in the show notes. It's great to see some of these as linux native and I'm looking forward to buying some of them.

For linux i like Openarena which is built of quake III
Wow, the Trine series looks amazing!
arent there some open source alternatives to the unreal engine that run on linux? and arent there some ideas to develop more games for linux? (vale, id soft. fe.)
*i have tried mac, linux and windows on the same computer - and bare in mind i'm using an AMD GPU (they have less support from AMD)
I didn't know Prey ran natively on Linux, cool stuff. I already played it on the 360 too though, is it the same for Prey 2 though?
why aren't they, native general just means they have a version coded for a linux platform, weather that be along side another OS or not.
They are working on a linux port for steam. GabeN said it should be out this summer.
Are these games native? I mean, they already come along with the operation system or you need to intall them?
U mentioned about HoNewert (which as i assume is some kind of LoL clone) but u didnt mention about its parrent - Savage: Battle for Newerth which is unique from any windows game and provide a TONS of fun
i wasn't saying that kind of hardware, i mean the design of the hardware like the laptops or the imac. :P
I think I know the song from the first demo. Is it Psysex? Cosmosis? Nordic Nature by Gaudium? It's hard to hear.
minecraft is actually "Java native", but as JVMs are natively available for linux, I agree to you.
They're porting Steam and the Source Engine to Linux in the near future. They've even made Left 4 Dead 2 run on native Linux code stable!
Yes, that is the single most important use of an operating system... Then again, maybe not. Do you eaven read things that you write before you click send?

How old are these games, or are these the new games coming out?

I don't understand. Shank is from EA, it's native Linux, but what about the recent announcement of two web-only games for Ubuntu? Everybody said EA had no previous games for Linux.
so in other words, there are total of 23 native games for Linux?
I was playing Spiral Knight from Steam over Windows...
Its a REALLY NICE GAME... a HUGE COMMUNITY and a USEFULL WIKI.
Tell me more about your Amiga support.
Linux is a dynamic OS, which means that it adapts to the needs of the user community. If more gamers were to switch to Linux, there would be a great improvement.
You think that you would not switch to Linux because of the lack of games, when really, it's the other way around: games in Linux are not great because there is not a big gaming demand from Linux users.
spiral knights is one hell of a good game...needs to be higher on that list of yours
But the client doesn't make anything else. It just starts the Java-container of the game.

Nice to see Regnum in there.

yeah but how do you make a game for linux? man i wish i could chat with the people that makes this stuff.
machinarium is a genius game. won many awards.

good work danieloliveiracruz
Valve needs to release steam for Linux, I have plenty of games on that platform that I would like to play through Ubuntu rather than Windows. In fact I would consider ditching Windows if they made all of my games compatible as unlikely as that may be.
Majority of these available on LinuxMint 11 & 12?

Yeah I use Debian/Ubuntu-based systems, but I heard that Arch is the fastest widely supported distro.
same thing goes for mac.... hoping linux and mac both get more market share. increased competition will help us all. Maybe my next mac will costs less.... ;-p
dunno if it was in the vid, but UT2004 has a free version - demo. Has multiplayer and all, pretty popular.
just a question of the configuration ;-) and yeah these sony raids were fun :D
So you are saying you want it to have the same style
You don't understand. I can get any game I want to run on my Linux distro. If I wanted to I could play xbox live on my laptop... even though it would probably be really laggy considering the processor.
Machinarium is basically a flash game
If u have compiz please disable sync to vblank from compizconfig settings manager under OpenGL ;)
IF they make games in Open GL i say bye-bye to Windows!
If u are using ubuntu, yes it's the one in the control panel, u should try with the fix i gave u. If it does not work, please create a post on the ubuntu forums, with ur problem and xandr output and i will be able to help you easily. Best Regards
Im not saying that DirectX is more advanced than OpenGL, but DirectX is more popular at AAA game developers!
Not enough quake3, Dota2, UT2004, Serious Sam 3, Metro 2033
Most of these I already knew about, but some I didn't. And I wish I did. :) They look like good games.
Yeah, I know. Linux is not for gamers yet but there is a hope. Valve have already ported some nice games, though I don't think we will have linux versions Battlefield, CoD, Fifa... and those kind of "games for windows".
Spiral Knights isn't really native, is it?
I always thought it's a Java-game. (And the version i played WAS a java-game)
Runs better than on Windows with Wine/Crossover.
they should combine the Linux OS with the games of windows and the hardware of mac that would be awesome.
Linux is da best, period
where can i install the restricted drivers? u mean the one through control panel? i done that...it barely working..i submit the bug and the developer already contact me and said its common bug :/ and since it is restricted driver, they cant do much
i installed the restricted driver...i already sudo aticonfig --initial..how to restart the ati panel?
Well, Valve calls Windows 8 a disaster for game makers and is quickly working on bringing all its titles (with Steam) to Linux in response, so maybe it isn't as far as one might think ;)
And ubuntu is merely preference for me. I use slacks on an old PC. And i have VM's for just about every distro there is (including PCBSD and freeBSD.
Minetest-c55 and Mesecons for circuits.
Lua script makes mod creation fast.
